Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter
We have been Keeping the Peace Since 1850. Part of our mission to keep you safe is to keep inmates from circulating in and out of jail.
This e-newsletter showcases a Culinary Arts Program at the women's jail in Santee to help convicted felons find a job once they are released from custody. This is just one of the many job training programs we have in our detention facilities.
This St. Patrick's Day, do the responsible thing and don't drink and drive. Our deputies will be conducting extra DUI patrols on March 17th. There will also be several DUI checkpoints in effect around St. Patrick's Day. If you get caught drinking and driving, you will go to jail.
Stay safe,
Bill Gore, Sheriff
San Diego County

Call it a recipe for change. The Las Colinas Detention and Re-entry Facility is serving inmates a second chance through the Culinary Arts Program.
Click on the above video to watch highlights from the program. You can also watch the video by following us on VIMEO.
For six months, participants work a ten-hour shift at the Missing Fork Café and Coffee House inside the jail. They learn about menu planning, purchasing, human resources, food presentation and serving, as well as working as a barista.
The program is in collaboration with the Grossmont Adult School. Participants graduate with a Manage First program certificate from the National Restaurant Association.
Every person serving time at Las Colinas will be released back into the community at some point. Employment plays a critical role in creating the skills and relationships needed to become a positive part of our society.
We hope what they learn behind bars through the Culinary Arts Program will help prevent them from offending again after their release.

There are plenty of options and the focus is on nutrition. The Sheriff's Food Services Division has been serving Meatless Friday and low-salt meals to inmates at all seven county jails. To learn more about this new program, click on the above video or follow the Sheriff's Department on
VIMEO.
Working with a chef, Food Services replaced salt with herbs and spices in soups, lunch and dinner recipes. A meatless item is also served every Friday.
Dr. Alfred Joshua, Sheriff's Department Chief Medical Officer says the goal is to help prevent high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. It could also lead to a reduction in healthcare costs associated with these health issues.
By reducing meat consumption and providing inmates with low-salt foods, the Sheriff's Department hopes to establish healthy eating habits among inmates so it may continue when they are released.
Changes to the menu were implemented in July 2015 while staying within county budget. Sheriff's Food Services also provides meals to three County Probation Facilities for juveniles. The production facility provides 19,000 meals daily.

Don't press your luck on St. Patrick's Day by drinking and driving.
The Sheriff's Department is targeting impaired drivers and making sure they don't endanger the lives of innocent people on our roadways.
Watch for increased DUI patrols by Sheriff's Deputies across the county beginning on Thursday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m. and lasting through
3:00 a.m. the following day.
Deputies will also be conducting DUI checkpoints in contract cities between 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. on the following days:
March 4: Imperial Beach
March 12: Santee
March 18: San Marcos
March 19: Lemon Grove
The goal of these operations is to remove impaired drivers from roadways and prevent crashes that can cause serious injury or death.
In 2015, the Sheriff's Department arrested 1,516 people for DUI. In 2014, deputies arrested 1,610 people for impaired driving. In 2013, 1,888 people were arrested for impaired driving.
The Sheriff's Department has these tips for a safe St. Patrick's Day:
- Plan a safe way home before you go out.
- Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home.
- If you're impaired, use a taxi, ride sharing service, call a sober friend or family member or use public transportation.
- If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 9-1-1 immediately.
