The Sheriff's Department is always looking for ways we can better serve and keep you safe.
Right now, plans are in the works for a new Sheriff's Crime Lab.  In this month's newsletter, you will learn more about this exciting project that will help us better solve crimes and bring criminals to justice.
This time of year is a cause for celebration for high school and college students across the county.  If you're going to party, be responsible and don't drink and drive.  One more thing: always buckle up when getting behind the wheel.  These precious few seconds could save your life.

New Crime Lab In The Works 

New Crime Lab
San Diego County is in the midst of designing a new regional Crime Laboratory. 
 
The new Sheriff's Crime Lab will be located at the County Operations Center at 5590 Overland Avenue in Kearny Mesa.  It will have five levels of office, laboratory and warehouse space for the Sheriff's Crime Lab and Property & Evidence Units. 
 
It will also house Central Investigations which consists of the Homicide Detail, Cyber & Financial Crimes, Elder Abuse, and Family Protection Detail.

Be A Responsible Social Host

Prom and graduation season are just around the corner.  The Sheriff's Department wants to remind adults that it is illegal to provide alcohol and host underage drinking parties in San Diego County.  You will be arrested and booked in jail.

A Social Host  is anyone who knowingly hosts underage drinking parties on property they own, lease or otherwise control.  The Social Host  ordinance assigns responsibility to those who knew or should have known an underage drinking party was occurring on their property.

V iolators face up to $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail or both. You can also be billed for law enforcement services and held liable for injuries sustained by third parties.

You can report underage drinking parties to the Sheriff's Department, 24 hours per day. Call our non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200
 
Teens who learn about a party on social media can also call the Crime Stoppers Students Speaking Out Tip Line at (888) 580-8477.  You could be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward.

Don't Drink And Drive On Cinco De Mayo

For many, Cinco de Mayo is a time for celebration and enjoying delicious.  Sadly, there will be some people who will put lives in danger by drinking and driving.
To protect the community from impaired drivers, the Sheriff's Department will be adding extra DUI patrols across San Diego County on May 5.
If you do drink this Cinco de Mayo, be sure to have a designated driver ready or call a taxi or ride-sharing service.

Click It Or Ticket
 Wearing a seat belt isn't just the law: it could mean the difference between life and death.
  
This month, the Sheriff's Department is cracking down on people who don't wear their seat belts.
  
The Click It or Ticket campaign will run from May 23 to June 5. 
 
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly half of the 21,022 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2014 were not wearing seat belts.
 
Be aware that deputies are ALWAYS looking for drivers who aren't following California's seat belt laws.  Anyone caught not wearing their seat belt may be cited. A first offense will cost you a minimum of $161 plus court fees.
 
Remember to always wear your seat belt ... CLICK IT OR TICKET!!!

Wanted Fugitive

Every month, the Sheriff's Department works with the San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force (FTF) and Crime Stoppers to find and arrest people wanted for committing crimes. 

Be on the lookout for 46-year-old Jesus Ignacio Torres.  He is wanted for possession of a controlled substance for sale and for possession of stolen property.    

Torres stands 5'9"  tall and weighs about 200 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.  He is known to frequent Spring Valley. 
 
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Jesus Ignacio Torres is urged to call  Crime Stoppers You can remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.  Call

All detention facilities will remain open.  The closure to the public of business offices will not impact deputies in the field.

Arson Suspects - Poway
   Arson Suspects Poway    
The Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit wants your help in identifying and locating suspects responsible for several fires at Meadowbrook Middle School in Poway.

On Friday, March 11, 2016, at about 8:00 a.m., a custodian at Meadowbrook Middle School called the Poway Sheriff's Station to report fires that were set throughout the campus sometime earlier that morning.

 Posters were lit on fire, as well as a trash can and a locker.

Take a good look at the surveillance photo of a group of juveniles that was seen at the school around 1:00 a.m. on March 11.  To see more photos, click here

Nearly 100 deputies and officers have made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety and protection of our county and its people.

  Volunteers Honored
The Sheriff's Department has more than 900 volunteers that assist deputies with day to day operations. 
 
Recently, the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors honored three of our volunteers for their incredible contributions and dedication.
 
Congratulations to the following three Sheriff's Volunteers for being named "Volunteers of the Year:"
  • Bill Denton - Senior Volunteer at the Santee Sheriff's Station.  He has been a volunteer for the Sheriff's Department for 18 years.
  • Pam Medhurst - Search and Rescue K-9 Team Leader.  She has been with the Sheriff's SAR Unit for 18 years.
  • Bill Graul - Sheriff's Crime Lab.  He has been at the Crime Lab for 29 years.
