San Diego County Sheriff - November 2016
San Diego County Sheriff
Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter

The holiday season is nearly here.  Many of us will be traveling or hosting family and friends.  Whatever you're doing, I want to remind you to please be safe on the road.  Our deputies will be looking out for drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs.  Do the responsible thing: don't drink and drive.  Also, don't forget to buckle up.

In this month's newsletter, you will read about the many amazing things happening in the Sheriff's Department.  Learn how deputies at one of our jails saved the life of a woman going through a medical emergency.  What they did is another example of our deputies' commitment to service and community.

Our K-9 Unit is a lot safer on the streets thanks to the addition of a new resource: safety vests for each of our canines.  I want to thank the Honorary Deputy Sheriff's Association (HDSA) for their generous donation.

I also want to personally invite you to several community events.  Help fight crime by taking part in the Crime Stoppers "Light The Night Against Crime" 5K Run/Walk in Liberty Station.  Stop by "Coffee with the Community" and get to know our deputies.  We hope to see you at some of these events.

Right Place, Right Time

Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

No one wants to go to jail, but being in custody saved the life of a woman with an undiagnosed heart condition.  Deputies and nurses at the Las Colinas Detention and Re-entry Facility in Santee jumped into action when they recognized a medical emergency.

Click on the above video to learn more about this incredible story.  You can also watch the video by following the Sheriff's Department on VIMEO.

The medical emergency happened on Labor Day, September 5 th when Christina Livingston's heart just stopped.  She was unresponsive in her cell and had no pulse.

The only thing between Christina and death was the quick work of deputies and nurses.  They gave Christina CPR for 15 minutes until an ambulance arrived.  It was discovered she had an undiagnosed abnormal heart rhythym that caused her heart to stop.  She had surgery to implant a device that will deliver a shock to restore a normal heartbeat.

Doctors say with Christina's condition, she needed at least ten minutes of continuous CPR to survive.  Christina and her mother are grateful for the deputies and nurses who saved her life.

K-9 Vests
Safety Vests for K-9s - San Diego County Sheriff's Department

Sheriff's K-9s work hard every day protecting their deputy partners, tracking suspects or evidence and detecting drugs.

They have an important job at the Sheriff's Department to help keep you safe, but it's also a dangerous one.

Click on the above video to see how a donation of safety vests from the Honorary Deputy Sheriff's Association (HDSA) could be lifesaving for these dogs.  You can also watch this video by following the Sheriff's Department on VIMEO.

The Sheriff's K-9 Unit was established in 1967.  It has a total of 30 dogs.  To become a K-9 Handler, a deputy must have at least two years of patrol experience.

Don't Drink And Drive This Thanksgiving

The Automobile Club of Southern California (AAA) says Thanksgiving is the busiest travel time of the year.

With more people on the road, Sheriff's Deputies will be out in force during the long Thanksgiving weekend to stop drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

To watch a video on the high price and dangers of drinking and driving, click on the above video.  You can also watch it by following the Sheriff's Department on VIMEO.

The Sheriff's Department has received help with our mission to keep impaired drivers off our roads.  The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) has awarded the Sheriff's Department a grant worth $250,000 that will fund a year's worth of special operations and campaigns designed to stop DUI drivers.  That includes checkpoints, patrols, warrant sweeps and traffic enforcement.

If you're driving anywhere this Thanksgiving weekend, don't forget to buckle your seat belt.  Many car crash injuries and deaths could be prevented with the simple click of a seat belt.  Buckle Up America - Every Trip, Every Time!

If you are caught drinking and driving, you will go to jail.  Remember: Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.
