Connecting, Creating & Conserving    December 2016

Happy Holidays! As we prepare to wrap up another year, we'd like to thank you for being a part of the San Diego River Park movement. If you are considering making a year-end gift, we appreciate your consideration.  Whether it is open space acquisition, youth nature education, river cleanups or advocacy work to create the 52 mile San Diego River Park system, we depend upon your generosity.  Thank you!

We wish you a joyous holiday season!
In Memory of A Great Man
Conrad Brennen

The River Park Foundation volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization, and we are so sad to share that we have lost an important member of the River Family, Conrad Brennen.

Conrad was long-time member of our volunteer team, and his cheerful grin, compassionate shoulder, and steadfast dedication meant so much to so many.  His contributions to creating a better future for the San Diego River will continue to be seen for many years to come. Conrad and his beloved wife, Judy, were recognized in 2013 as our Volunteers of the Year.  Indeed, we will miss Conrad very much.
Open Space Acquisition Update
Temescal Creek Overlook Reaches Goal!

Thanks to nearly 300 supporters, we met our goal and raised more than $50,000 toward the Temescal Creek Overlook Acquisition!  in doing so we are protecting an important trail corridor and wildlife area.  Thank you!

To complete this project we have also received wonderful grants from the Hervey Family Fund at The San Diego Foundation and Vulcan Materials Company Foundation.  We have just one more grant application outstanding!  We hope to share some very good news shortly and complete the purchase before the end of the month!  Together we can indeed do great things!
Stocks Make a Great Gift
There are many benefits

We have been contacted several times and asked whether we can accept donations of stock.  Yes!

With the Stock Market at record levels, appreciated stock makes a fantastic gift choice.  Besides not paying losing the value of your stock to capital gains, there are other benefits.

2017 Kayak Clean Up Announced!
Join us on January 14th at 8am or 10am

Once a year, we get special permission to enter the San Diego River Estuary on kayaks and clear trash from this sensitive habitat. We also conduct a shore cleanup.

Limited spots are available for the kayaks.  They usually fill very fast! To sign-up for the interest list, please email

Double The Impact of Your Gift!
Help Us Raise $25,000 For Mission Valley Program

One of our generous supporters has offered to match up to 12,500 in donations received between now and 12/31!

Your gift can have twice the impact!  Funds will go to support more than $250,000 in grants we have recently received.  But we need to raise $25,000 to start work on the grants!  The grants will work to improve the health of the River in Mission Valley and expand our outreach activities.

Donations of any amount is greatly appreciated.
Headwaters Update
Exciting News from the Mountains

In November, volunteers helped to plant 100 native plants and create an outdoor seating area at our Boulder Creek Preserve.

The amphitheater, supported by the San Diego Fly Fishers and the Golden State Flycasters Club, will be used for youth nature education programs and is dedicated to Skip Price.

Thank you to everyone who helped with these projects! Click here to see a slideshow of construction photos.

Like exploring the headwaters? Adventurous volunteers with backcountry experience are invited to join us for Stream Assessment hikes in 2017. For more information, contact Benjamin at (619) 297-7380 or benjamin@sandiegoriver.org.
We All Count
Volunteers Needed for Annual Survey

The San Diego River Park Foundation will once again be bringing our assessment expertise to this annual survey of homelessness in San Diego.  Without our volunteers, this vulnerable population would not be counted as part of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless's annual census. If you are interested in participating in this year's count on January 27th, please let us know.

To sign up or learn more, contact Benjamin at (619) 297-7380 or benjamin@sandiegoriver.org .
Thank You Trail Champions!

River Park Foundation to Receive $23,200 for trails

Thank you if you supported the San Diego River Trail by voting in the national online contest.  Thanks to all that voted, we came in 3rd out of 12 trails selected for this contest put on by the American Hiking Society and Michelob Ultra.

The funds will be used to support our Volunteer Trail Team and enhancements to our web site to include trail and information for your future outings!
River Coalition Adopts Their Annual Work Plan

Each year the River Coalition works to identify programs and projects that it wants to work on in the coming year.  At its November meeting the group adopted its 2017 Work Plan.

The group won't be meeting in December.  The next meeting is scheduled for January 20th.
