San Dimas City Council - May Meeting Highlights

During the May meetings, the City Council:

• Honored Carolyn Gomm as San Dimas 2023 Older American Honoree and San Dimas High School 2023 CIF Southern Regional Division IV Champions.
• Rejection of all bids for construction for Playground Surface Replacement Project at Lone Hill Park and Horsethief Canyon Park, and authorized staff to advertise the project.
• Approved letter of opposition to proposed affordable permanent supportive housing development project at 740 E Foothill Blvd.
• Award of a construction contract and budget appropriation for Eaton Road et al Street Improvement Project for a total budget amount of $991,377.
• Authorized City Manager to execute a lease agreement with Area D Office of Disaster Management for office space at the Martin House - 246 E. Bonita Ave.
• Approved renewal of the agenda management software agreement with Granicus formly (PrimeGov).
• Adjourned in honor of Officer Louie Pompei, Glendora resident and Terri Muse, Waste Management Public Sectors Solution Representative.

Downtown Specific Plan

The City of San Dimas is embarking on the creation of its first Downtown Specific Plan. The new Specific Plan will help establish a planning and zoning framework for encouraging innovative, transit-oriented development in the greater downtown area while preserving the character of the historic commercial district. During the planning process, new housing, retail, employment, and hospitality uses in the downtown area will be proposed to complement a new Metro Gold Line passenger light rail and transit station opening in 2025. Several opportunity sites within walking distance of the transit station will allow significant potential for infill development and adaptive reuse of existing underutilized properties in the downtown.  

One of the key outcomes of the process will be the creation of design guidelines for both private development and the public realm. These guidelines will encourage future development to meet the community’s standards and expectations and to create a strong sense of community identity and place.

Bonita Avenue and Cataract Avenue Intersection Reopening

On Wednesday, May 24^th, shortly after 9 PM, the Bonita Avenue and Cataract Avenue intersection was reopened to all directions of travel. This reopening follows the realignment and reconstruction of the intersection as part of the Foothill Gold Line light rail project. With all temporary traffic movement restrictions removed, it is important that drivers continue obeying the posted traffic signs, signals, and striping to ensure a safe and efficient flow of traffic through the intersection.

The rules of the road per the California Vehicle Code (CVC) apply to all roadways and intersections whether they are new or old. They contribute to the safety of drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

As a friendly reminder, “limit lines” are solid wide white line markings across the roadway surface that indicate where vehicles shall stop before an intersection or crosswalk in compliance to legal requirements such as at a red light, stop sign, or to yield to pedestrians.

When navigating the Bonita Avenue and Cataract Avenue intersection, drivers shall stop just prior to the limit lines without crossing them. Traffic signal sensors are triggered and help give a green light faster when vehicles stop in the area behind limit lines when waiting at a red light.

Also, “Stop Here on Red” signs have been posted adjacent to the limit lines at the Bonita Avenue and Cataract Avenue intersection to remind drivers to wait at the limit line when the light is red.
