Atmospheric River: High Winds Topple Trees, Scaffolding in San Francisco
The heavy precipitation and increased winds slamming into San Francisco Sunday afternoon are causing plenty of problems with downed trees, scaffolding that came crashing down and some flooding. One tree actually prompted the evacuation of a few residences. The San Francisco Fire Department evacuated several homes along Ninth Avenue in San Francisco over concerns that a teetering 100-foot tree might topple on the houses nearby. “It’s putting some houses in jeopardy because it could fall on the houses. It’s one of dozens of trees to come down,” said Rachel Gordon With San Francisco Public Works The plan was to cut down the tree as soon as Public Works crews could get equipment in place. Strong winds knocked over a scaffolding in the SoMa district. The metal scaffolding came crashing down at a building near Natoma and 9th street Sunday.

Neighbor rescues man from burning home in San Francisco
A quick-thinking neighbor saved a man from a burning home in San Francisco on Monday. Video from Citizen App shows a man trapped in the window of a home in the Forest Knolls neighborhood. With smoke billowing out, a neighbor moved a vehicle under the window and secured a ladder on its roof to help the man get out. Minutes later, the home burst into flames. San Francisco Fire officials said the man will be okay. The cause of the house fire was smoking, officials said. The department posted to Twitter shortly after the rescue that smoking is the biggest cause of house fire deaths. "Cigarettes and other smoking products cause a third of all accidental fire fatalities in the home – the biggest killer in accidental fires," they said.

3 Injured in Rollover Crash on Northbound Highway 280
Three people were injured in a rollover crash on northbound Interstate Highway 280 in San Francisco early Thursday morning, California Highway Patrol and city fire officials said. Multiple vehicles were reported in the crash shortly after 5:30 a.m. on northbound Highway 280 near the Geneva Avenue off-ramp. San Francisco fire officials said three people were treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

BAY AREA NEWS
No code violations found at San Francisco's Chase Center after death, injuries
Inspectors say they found no code violations at the Chase Center Thursday. This comes after one person died at a Phish concert Sunday night and two others were injured. Two inspectors with the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection were at the Chase Center Thursday after a complaint filed with DBI alleged the guardrails inside are unsafe, that the balcony guardrail is not high enough and that stairs leading to the guardrail are steep.

Atmospheric river creates havoc around Bay Area
Driving rain and fierce winds battered Northern California on Sunday, filling the sky with a dense, dark curtain as rivers climbed their banks, downed trees and new mini-lakes snarled Bay Area traffic, and the threat of massive debris flows caused evacuations in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties. Danger from potential cascades of debris and sodden earth in the burn scars from last year’s devastating wildfires led to evacuation orders in parts of San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties where the CZU Lightning Complex burned through last year.

California COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker
California will adopt an age-based system to vaccinate residents and turn over its distribution to the health insurance company Blue Shield in an effort to speed up what has been among the slowest vaccination rollouts in the country. Meanwhile, the discovery of new variants that may spread more easily, including a mutation that took hold in the Bay Area in December, makes the rollout even more urgent to fix. San Francisco has said it wants to vaccinate all eligible residents by June; at the same time, questions have arisen over why people from out of town can get vaccinated there. Here's the latest on when and where you will be able to get a vaccine across the Bay Area. If you are scheduled for an appointment, here's what to do before and after getting the shot.

Heavy rain unleashes mud, debris flows in Northern California areas burned by wildfire
Northern California was battered record rain, causing flooding, debris flows after a year of drought conditions and destructive wildfires. Downtown Sacramento hit an all-time record with 5.44 inches. The torrential rainfall had shut down at least one crucial highway as mud, rocks and unshackled debris flushed down denuded hillsides. Flash flood and excessive rain warnings blared across road signs and phone screens, with some officials declaring that for those in the Dixie fire burn area who had not yet evacuated, it could be too late. “If you are near a burn scar, it may be too late to evacuate,” officials at the National Weather Service in Sacramento said on Twitter, along with a list of safety warnings. “Do not attempt to cross a debris flow. Take shelter in the highest floor of your home.”
