The surgery took place in August at the NYU Langone Medical Center. The patient, 41-year-old Patrick Hardison, is still undergoing physical therapy at the hospital but plans to return home to Senatobia, Mississippi, in time for Thanksgiving.

Bay Bridge risks, solutions debated as leaks invade foundation
It wasn't long after workers finished pouring concrete at the bottom of the new eastern Bay Bridge's tower foundation that the cracks emerged. Some of the fissures that began to show up in April 2007 were minor, but the two largest were anything but - they were more than 10 feet long and cut through the 20-inch-thick, steel-bar-reinforced concrete layer designed to block corrosive salt water from reaching the foundation frame and tower anchor bolts that provide stability in a major earthquake.

Fire is a constant risk in the 61-acre Mt. Sutro Open Space Reserve, thanks to dead trees and ground cover that have multiplied in the wake of the ongoing drought. To reduce the risk of a blaze, UCSF Parnassus has announced it will bring in workers to remove flammable undergrowth and trim branches. The twist: the majority of them will be goats.

Butt dials contribute to jammed up city dispatch center
City dispatchers are jammed up by a growing number of 911 calls, and while an increase in reported crimes is contributing to the problem, there may be another unexpected reason for the jump - butt dials. A recent Google study of S.F.'s Department of Emergency Management found that some 29 percent of sampled emergency calls were accidental dials. Of the sample, 197 accidental calls were from cellphones, while only 79 were from lines to a building.

An attorney who has filed several lawsuits over this issue says at least 11 people have died in the last few years because of it.

Are Mission Landlords Really Burning Their Own Buildings?: An Analysis
This month's fire at 16th and Shotwell again revved up suspicions that the Mission District residential fires, now at least eight and counting so far this year, are suspicious malfeasance by profiteers in the stratospheric SF real estate market. A full 67 percent of the comments on SFist's breaking news article about that fire were devoted to debating the conspiracy theory that landlords might be burning their own buildings to vacate rent-controlled tenants or to try and sell the properties for, say, a cool $20 million.
