Crews contain 3-alarm church fire in San Francisco's Lower Pacific Heights

A three-alarm fire that broke out in a San Francisco church on Monday afternoon has been contained, the Fire Department said. Crews responded to the fire at the Seventh-day Adventist Church located at 2889 California St. in Lower Pac Heights at about 2 p.m. and were still on scene late Monday night. A shelter-in-place order was initially issued for several blocks on California Street as well as one block of Divisadero Street, but the order was lifted Monday evening. Two nearby homes were also evacuated but that order has also been lifted, officials said. Monday afternoon, smoke could be seen pouring out of the San Francisco church as firefighters sprayed it down from a ladder truck. At one point, there were five ladder trucks being used by fire crews to fight the flames.

San Francisco firefighters rescue person, 2 dogs from Mission District house fire

One person and two dogs were rescued from a fire at a multifamily home in San Francisco's Mission District late Monday night, firefighters said. The San Francisco Fire Department said crews responded around 11 p.m. to a one-alarm structure fire at a three-story residential building near 17th and Dolores streets. Firefighters rescued one adult and two dogs from the building. SFFD said all three were being checked by paramedics and were expected to be OK. Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the home, the department said.

Mother, daughter in critical condition after being swept into Baker Beach by waves

A sneaker wave pulled a mother and her young daughter into the ocean at Baker Beach on Thursday afternoon, according to the San Francisco Fire Department. Officials said the two were walking near the rocks at about 3:15 p.m. this afternoon when they were pulled into the surf. The mother and child were rescued from the water before firefighters arrived and were taken by paramedics to the hospital in serious condition. The incident happened hours after the National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement warning beachgoers of increased risks of sneaker waves and strong rip currents. The advisory remains in effect through early Sunday morning. Fire officials and witnesses said conditions at Baker Beach can be deceptive, especially near the rocky northeastern end of the shoreline.

‘So fired up’: San Francisco Fire Department graduates 47 new recruits at ceremony

Friends and loved ones beamed with pride Thursday at the graduation ceremony for the San Francisco Fire Department’s 137th class of recruits, 47 people who will now take on the responsibility of firefighting. The ceremony was held at Archbishop Riordan High School and included San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, Fire Chief Dean Crispen, Police Chief Derrick Lew, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, and Supervisors Chyanne Chen and Myrna Melgar. “I’m so fired up!” said Lurie to the gathering. “What a great way to kick off a day.” The Rev. Armando Gutierrez, chaplain at the San Francisco Fire Department, provided a spiritual message, praying for “courage when they are afraid, wisdom when they must make quick decisions, strength when they are weary, and compassion.” Gutierrez also asked the recruits to respect the dignity of every person they serve and prayed for the new firefighters’ safety. Lurie praised the department for a recent rescue at Dead Man’s Point in the city’s Lands’ End area.

Rare Golden Gate Bridge fireworks show headlines Bay Area Fourth of July celebrations

To mark the nation’s 250th birthday, San Francisco’s official fireworks show will be launched from the Golden Gate Bridge — only the third time pyrotechnics have ever been set off from the iconic span. The spectacle is scheduled to begin around 9:30 p.m., offering expanded viewing options as the fireworks launch from the bridge, the Marina Green and Pier 39. Overnight Oak Street Fire Draws Heavy Response to San Francisco Third-Floor Blaze

Fire crews rushed out today to a blaze burning on the third floor of a building at 179 Oak Street in San Francisco, setting up an incident command post across the street as they worked to bring the fire under control. As operations continued into the morning, officials had not yet released details about any injuries or what might have sparked the flames. The San Francisco Fire Department Media account reported on X that crews had placed an "Oak Street command in service at 179 Oak Street" while responding to a third-floor fire at the address.

San Francisco tourists rescued, fined after going off trail

Two tourists visiting San Francisco were rescued by helicopter Monday afternoon after becoming stranded off trail near the Golden Gate Bridge, according to the San Francisco Fire Department. Emergency crews responded at 4 p.m. after multiple 911 callers reported two people unable to safely leave an area 150 feet off trail. Cliff and heavy rescue teams with the fire department worked with a California Highway Patrol Air Operations helicopter to hoist the hikers to awaiting paramedics.

SFFD Battle Garage Fire, Rescue Stranded Dog

On Saturday, June 20, the San Francisco Fire Department battled a detached garage fire. The aggressive fire transpired during the afternoon in the Mission District. The SFFD was on scene within minutes of dispatch and worked to successfully confine the fire to one building. There were no injuries or displacements from the incident. The fire was brought under control at 2:05 p.m. A cause for the fire has not been disclosed to the public. On Sunday, June 21, the SFFD rescued a stranded dog at Fort Funston. Crews from Station 19 and Rescue 2 along with EMS set up a rope system and safely retrieved the animal. No dogs or humans were injured or in need of medical care during the incident.

Fire contained at The Mill café in San Francisco’s Alamo Square

Firefighters are responding Monday morning to a fire at The Mill café in the Alamo Square neighborhood, according to the San Francisco Fire Department. Crews contained the fire to The Mill, located at 736 Divisadero St., during their response, SFFD said at 3:21 a.m. in a social media post. Firefighters will remain on scene to ensure the fire remains contained. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Mill, known for its coffee and breads, has been operating for 13 years, according to the business.

1-Alarm Fire Extinguished

On June 25^th, SFFD Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on the 900 block of Florida St. Crews were able to make an aggressive interior attack and the fire was shortly extinguished. Three occupants were displaced and the American Red Cross was working with them on finding accommodations.

The San Francisco Fire Department battled a one-structure fire on Monday, June 29 at 9:17 a.m. Crews initiated a quick, aggressive interior attack and extinguished the fire. Exterior crews supported interior operations by opening up areas around the electrical source, which enhanced our ability to mitigate the incident quickly. No residents were displaced during the incident.

On Saturday, June 27, the San Francisco Fire Department had to battle a fire inside San Francisco International Airport (SFO). At 6:40 p.m. the SFFD responded to reports of a fire in a construction area on West Field Road at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Crews arrived on the scene at 6:43 p.m. and confirmed that the fire involved construction materials. The fire was quickly extinguished at 7:15 p.m. with no injuries reported, and no structures or terminals were affected.

Firefighters douse China Beach wildfire near Sea Cliff neighborhood

San Francisco firefighters and a fireboat battled a wildfire Saturday in China Beach, a secluded area of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area near the Sea Cliff neighborhood. Vegetation was burning about half a mile off the roadway on a dense, steep coastal cliffside that required firefighters to descend by rescue ropes and lay down 2,500 feet of hose, the Fire Department said on social media. The fire, reported about 4:30 p.m., was challenging because "vegetation fires spread fast, especially on cliffs and in dry brush," the Fire Department said. It was declared contained at 7:52 p.m.

2 injured in stabbing, 2 others arrested near SF's Civic Center Plaza, police say

Two people are injured, and another two have been arrested after a double stabbing that happened near San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza Sunday evening, police say. San Francisco Police Department said officers responded just after 6 p.m. to reports of a stabbing at 7th and Market streets. Police said two victims were found and transferred to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. During the investigation, officers located and arrested two suspects near Polk and Grove streets.

Grove Street Blaze Snarls Traffic as San Francisco Firefighters Lock Down Block

San Francisco firefighters were on the clock early this morning, battling a working fire near Grove Street that turned part of the neighborhood into an active emergency zone. Crews zeroed in on a single commercial building and warned they would be tied up at the scene for several hours, while officials urged the public to steer clear. According to the San Francisco Fire Department, the blaze was contained to a single commercial business, with firefighters expected to remain on site for several hours to fully knock it down and mop up.

2 shot, wounded after San Francisco World Cup watch party

Two people were shot after a fight near a World Cup watch party in San Francisco's Mission Bay neighborhood Tuesday night. The shooting happened around 9 p.m. near Mission Bay Boulevard and Fourth Street. Video from the scene showed crime tape surrounding Spark Social SF, which had hosted a World Cup watch party earlier in the evening. The San Francisco Chronicle reported an argument broke out during the final minutes of a DJ set before a man pulled out a gun and opened fire. Officers found two people suffering from gunshot wounds. According to the Chronicle, both victims were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive.

Victim seriously injured in stabbing in S.F.’s Nob Hill neighborhood

A person was hospitalized with serious injuries after a stabbing in San Francisco’s Nob Hill neighborhood, officials said Thursday. Fire Department spokespersons said paramedics responded to 960 Sutter St. around 9:30 a.m. where they found a person suffering from a “penetrating traumatic injury.” The victim was taken to San Francisco General Hospital’s trauma center. As of 10:45 a.m., the victim was in stable condition, fire officials said.

Mom, daughter speak after being pulled into ocean by sneaker wave, nearly drowning in SF

A Sacramento mother and her 7-year-old daughter are recovering after they were swept into the water at Baker Beach last week. Vanessa Bull said she had just arrived at the beach with her children when her daughter, Mireina, was pulled into the water by a sneaker wave. "We were taking the kids out to the water that day," Bull said. "Our GPS actually said that we would arrive at 3 p.m., and it happened at 3:15, so we had just got there from Sacramento with all the kids." Bull said she did not know there were dangerous surf conditions in the area. "I did not know at all, or I would not have taken my children out there," she said.

San Francisco bans uncertified lithium batteries

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday to pass legislation that will ban selling non-certified lithium-ion batteries. Supervisor Bilal Mahmood wrote, “These batteries have caused over 100 building fires, hundreds of families displaced, and millions in property damage. They are more prone to catch fire, and when they do burn faster and more toxic for our firefighters. This legislation will now ensure San Franciscans know that when they are purchasing an e-bike or scooter that it has a certified lithium ion battery.” Mahmood said the new city ordinance will allow the San Francisco Fire Department to “target and penalize” violators who sell batteries that are not certified and fail to meet safety requirements. As lithium-ion technology continues expanding rapidly in electric cars, scooters, and bicycles, firefighters said they are battling more battery-sparked fires.
