A Message from Sheriff Paul Miyamoto
County Jail #4 Closing Today, September 4
Dear Friends,

Last week, I announced in a joint press conference with Mayor London Breed and other electeds that the Sheriff's Office will close County Jail #4 (CJ #4) two months ahead of schedule.

Today, Friday, September 4, 2020, is CJ #4's last day of operation.

Thank you to the Sheriff's Office command staff and deputies and our health care partners whose focus and commitment advanced the jail's closing date. They have met every benchmark for closing while addressing new challenges for keeping people safe during a global pandemic, exceeding expectations and performing their duties at an exceptional level of professionalism

Please watch the video I shared with our staff to learn more.

Sheriff's Office Expands Agreement with Department of Police Accountability
The Sheriff's Office and the Department of Police Accountability (DPA) have signed a new letter of agreement that expands civilian oversight procedures for the Sheriff's Office.

The agreement builds on a 2019 memorandum of understanding between the two agencies and ensures that an independent, outside agency will investigate and review all allegations of serious SFSO misconduct.

Here are the highlights:

  • DPA will accept complaints of law enforcement misconduct from the public and from people in custody.
  • DPA will conduct an independent investigation, staffed by civilian investigators and attorneys with experience in law enforcement, custody issues, and civil rights law.
  • DPA will investigate a wider breadth of cases.
  • DPA will conduct regular audits of SFSO and make policy recommendations.
  • DPA will publish policy recommendations, case and audit findings in an annual report.
