Earlier today on July 11 at 4:24 a.m., the San Gabriel Fire Department responded to a significant structure fire at the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel.
As firefighters addressed the fire, pieces of the roof began to fall. The situation was subsequently classified as a four-alarm fire with 80 firefighters and 28 fire units responding to the incident with assistance from San Marino, Monterey Park, Alhambra, Arcadia, South Pasadena and Pasadena.
The fire was suppressed at 6:48 a.m. with no injuries. Damage to the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel includes a complete loss of the roof and damage to the interior of the building.
Representatives of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are at the scene to investigate the situation. Though a formal cause has not yet been determined, a preliminary investigation shows no immediate sign of arson. Investigators are still trying to assess the entirety of the structure for more information.
The Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was originally founded in 1771 and the current church structure was completed in 1805.
