CITY COUNCIL APPROVES FINANCING FOR WORKFORCE HOUSING PROJECT

The City Council recently approved $38 million in loans for a workforce housing project in the SoFA district. The project, known as Gateway Tower, will be a 15-story, mixed-use development with 220 apartments, including 120 units set aside for extremely low-income households. The remaining units will be reserved for households earning between 50% and 70% of the area median income. This will be the first purpose-built, affordable housing, high rise in downtown San José. Construction is expected to take 24 months. The developer is Core Cos.

EVICTION PREVENTION PROGRAM

Tenants and landlords who have questions about the eviction process may contact the Housing Department's Eviction Prevention Program (EPP) staff with questions. The phone number is 408-975-4444. The email address is evictionhelp@sanjoseca.gov.

EPP staff are also in the Downtown Superior Court building Wednesdays from 10:30 am to 12:45 pm. Staff provide legal referrals and resource information to tenants and landlords involved in eviction proceedings (known as unlawful detainer cases). The clinic is located in Department 14.

Tommy's Success Story

Tommy was one of the first residents at the City's Guadalupe interim housing community. While staying at Guadalupe, he completed the S.T.R.I.V.E. Program, which helps people who face barriers to employment and housing by providing opportunities to gain work experience, basic computer skills, vocational training, and connections to housing. He also made use of the facility's convenient location by using public transit to travel back and forth to work.

He was initially hesitant about leaving Guadalupe and moving into permanent housing due to bad prior experiences. However, he stuck with the process, worked closely with his LifeMoves case manager, and was able to find permanent housing.

Tommy moved into his own studio apartment, and LifeMoves helped set him up for success by providing household essentials, including a microwave, rice cooker, toiletries, and work shoes. Tommy expressed deep gratitude to LifeMoves and the staff at Guadalupe for their support as he overcame many challenges to regain stability and become self-sufficient.

RUE FERRARI EXPANDS

The City has completed the expansion of its Rue Ferrari emergency interim housing community. The site has provided 82 units of interim housing since it opened in 2021. The expansion adds 108 units, brining the total number of units at Rue Ferrari to 190. This is part of the City's plan to expand shelter and housing capacity to reduce unsheltered homelessness.
