I’ve been pondering what “news” to pass along this month… I started to do a 2021 recap, then considered some hokey New Year’s resolutions, and finally settled on the following general predictions for our Airport in 2022.

Demand for facilities will continue, generating private development opportunities and new construction projects. Air traffic activity will remain strong, and TAP will increase our efforts to garner more funding for airfield safety related capital improvements. Construction on Highway 110 will begin (that’s an easy one), and we pledge to work more closely with our current customers to better assist them with their business needs. Beginning in February, we will profile one of our HYI-based companies each month in this newsletter. Please let us know if you’re interested in being our launch company, and we’ll handle the rest.

MONTHLY TRAFFIC OPERATIONS

Annual total operations by year:

2017: 66,781

2018: 59,679

2019: 63,955

2020: 78,010

2021 final count:

82,368

Another record year in the books! We monitor operations each month to help us secure funding for future airport projects and improvements. The operations (aircraft landings and takeoffs) are counted every day during the Air Traffic Control Tower's hours of 7:00am to 9:00pm. Operations that occur outside of these hours are not tracked.

AIRPORT ITEM ON CITY COUNCIL AGENDA

The airport has an item on the City Council agenda for the meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, February 1. The item in discussion would approve staff to begin drafting a Zoning ordinance. Click here for the full agenda. Once approved, we will provide regular updates via our newsletter and Airport Advisory Board meetings.

COLD WEATHER PROCEDURES

It's that time of year when the winds pick up and the temperatures drop.

We remind you to keep your aircraft tied down well and recommend covering any exposed pipes and leaving sinks with a steady drip to prevent burst pipes. As a matter of precaution, now would be a good time to double check the location of your water shut-off valve.

Also, please check NOTAMS frequently in the case we need to close any runway or taxiway surfaces due to icy conditions. If you see or experience an icy surface, please report it to us immediately.

COVID RAPID TESTING

We are excited to announce that we are now able to provide free rapid COVID-19 testing. The test kits have been provided by the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce via the Small Business COVID-19 Rapid Testing Program.

Testing is available by appointment only Monday-Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. To schedule a test time, please call the office at (512) 216-6042.

KHYI INSTRUMENT METEOROLOGICAL CLUB

IMC meetings are held the third Thursday of each month.
