SPECIAL GUEST CONTRIBUTOR:

ALEX MORMAN, US AVIATION

My name is Alex Morman, and I am the Director for US Aviation Academy’s new campus at KHYI. I have nearly ten years of experience working as an Airframe and Powerplant mechanic in the General Aviation sector.

I have had a passion for aviation since I was very young. I had the opportunity to visit an aviation museum as part of a field trip in elementary school and had no idea at the time that this would be the life changing start of a fulfilling career in the aviation industry.

Seeing the many exhibits at this museum, I was fascinated by the main attraction: an SR71 Blackbird. At the time, I had no understanding of how something so large could even get off the ground, let alone fly at speeds over 2,000 miles per hour. I left the museum that night convinced that one day, I would join the ranks of airmen across the world. In August of 2014, I graduated from A&P school, starting immediately afterwards in General Aviation.

In January of 2023, US Aviation began work on the new campus at San Marcos Regional Airport. We have a first class ready to start in the middle of June. The truth is the aviation industry is in dire need of new aviation maintenance technicians. Technicians are in short supply everywhere, whether it be in GA, corporate aviation, or the major airlines.

US Aviation is striving to be on the leading edge of education to fulfill that need. Our program is approximately 12 months of study, covering all subjects necessary to become an aviation maintenance professional. Students will receive the classroom instruction and hands-on training needed to prepare them for the FAA written exams and the oral/practical tests, at an affordable price. If you enjoy working with your hands and would like to pursue a career in the aviation industry, there is no better time to jump in. If you would like to learn more, please see the flyer further down in this newsletter, or feel free to drop by and talk to us.

MONTHLY TRAFFIC OPERATIONS
Annual total operations by year:

2019: 63,955
2020: 78,010
2021: 82,368
2022: 91,852

2023 through May:

40,489

We monitor operations each month to help us secure funding for future airport projects and improvements. The operations (aircraft landings and takeoffs) are counted every day during the Air Traffic Control Tower's hours of 7:00am to 9:00pm. Operations that occur outside of these hours are not tracked.

BUILD-TO-SUIT HANGAR AVAILABILITY

Following a Request for Proposals process, Council recently approved a build-to-suit agreement with Don Jackson Construction for the construction of over 55,000 square feet of hangar space in the Kilo Development Area.

A sign will be going up at the airport entrance and those interested can contact Tony Jackson at (254) 644-7935.

TAXIWAY CHARLIE RECONSTRUCTION

Taxiway Echo is closed today until 6pm for saw cutting and sealing the joints and airfield electricians are making solid progress on light and sign installation.

Pavement markings are scheduled for next week but how far they get will be dictated by the weather.

At some point in the coming weeks, all airfield lighting will have to be shut off for a new regulator to be installed. During this time, PAPIs will be out of service. Our hope is that work will be completed during daylight hours but there is a possibility we will have to shut down the airport overnight.

A special newsletter will be sent out at least a week in advance so our users can make any necessary plans to accommodate a closure.

Substantial completion and reopening of Foxtrot is scheduled for the third or fourth week of June.
