Happy (belated) Veteran’s Day and (early) Thanksgiving!

I think it’s fitting that these two holidays are so near each other on the calendar. One of the best parts of working in aviation is meeting so many Veterans. The older I get, the more grateful I become for the men and women who have served and made incredible sacrifices for our country.

A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to meet Lew Griffith, a 97-year-old Veteran. Funnily enough, the meeting came to pass after Jim Wimberly struck up a conversation with Lew in the soup aisle of Randall’s after spotting his WWII Veteran hat. Jim invited him down for a special tour of the CAF and after learning about Lew’s incredible history, we invited KVUE to come out and film a surprise ride in “That’s All Brother”.

You can see the piece further down in the newsletter but there’s a few components of his impressive bio that I’d love to share.

Lew was drafted into WWII during his Freshman year at the University of Texas. By the time he was 21 years old, he had earned six air medals flying 42 missions as a B-25 pilot in Italy. After the war, he went on to earn Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Engineering. Lew then re-enlisted in the Korean War AND Vietnam War, where he earned a Bronze Star. Despite nearing his 98th birthday in December, Lew continues to volunteer his time building tables for Austin’s Settlement Home – as he’s done for the last 47 years. So far, he’s built over 120 of them in his garage in Austin.

This Thanksgiving, when you’re sitting around the table with your families taking turns sharing what you’re thankful for, please add Lew and his fellow Veterans to your list.

Thank you to the CAF for helping to make this very special day happy not only for Lew, but for all of those that were able to meet him and hear his incredible stories.

Happy Flying,
