Happy month of the Turkey!

October marked the kick-off of the Taxiway Alpha Reconstruction Project and the official approval of the Airport Zoning Ordinance. These are two items that make a huge difference in the growth and protection of the airport and our surrounding neighbors.

If you weren't able to view the Zoning Ordinance during the open house or hear about it at one of our Advisory Board meetings, we'll include it in the next newsletter for you to peruse. It's so freshly approved that it hasn't made it online yet.

As for Alpha, as it goes, as soon as equipment started breaking up concrete, the rain started falling. I'M NOT COMPLAINING! It's a beautiful sight and shouldn't slow down construction too much.

The biggest difference between the Alpha and Charlie projects is one of logistics. Because Alpha is adjacent to aircraft hangars and a busier area of the ramp, we're developing a specific map for truck movements in and out of the construction area. Line of sight between big trucks and small planes is a concern and as soon as we have an official ingress and egress plan, you'll be the first to know.

Zachary (the contractor for the project) will be placing reflective tabs on the ramp for the vehicle lanes so they're easy to spot for everyone and to make sure no one ties down in those areas. We appreciate your assistance with this effort.

Hope you all have a fantastic November and get your fill of food, football, and family on the 23rd!

Safe Flying,

Cassidy Berenato

Vice President

MONTHLY TRAFFIC OPERATIONS
Annual total operations by year:

2019: 63,955
2020: 78,010
2021: 82,368
2022: 91,852

2023 through October:

80,624

Beginning this month and going forward, monthly traffic counts will include after-hours operations collected via ADSB data.

We monitor operations each month to help us secure funding for future airport projects and improvements. The operations (aircraft landings and takeoffs) are counted every day during the Air Traffic Control Tower's hours of 7:00am to 9:00pm. Operations that occur outside of these hours are not tracked.

ALPHA RECONSTRUCTION

San Marcos Regional Airport received a discretionary grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for the reconstruction of Taxiway Alpha.

Phase I of construction kicked off on Monday, October 23. We anticipate the project to be completed toward the end of May 2024, weather permitting.

  • Phase I closures, as shown in the map below, will include Taxiway Alpha between Taxiway Charlie and the FBO. Additionally, Taxiway Bravo will be closed.

  • Crews will make an effort to reopen Taxiway Bravo as quickly as possible.

  • During Phase I, most aircraft will be able to taxi parallel to Alpha between the taxiway and the T-hangars on the ramp. Aircraft with wingspans larger than 60′ are strongly encouraged to back-taxi on Runway 8.

Construction crews will be moving to and from the construction area via the ramp. They will be escorted and in communication with the tower but please use extra caution when taxiing in this area. Below is a map showing their routing. (Click on the photo to be taken to a larger version.)

The contractor, Zachary Construction, will attend all Airport Advisory Meetings during the course of construction so please join us to ask questions and get the latest updates. Additionally, we will send out special notice newsletters announcing any changes or timeline updates.

As always, keep an eye on NOTAMs and don’t hesitate to call the airport management office if you have questions or need clarification on any issues.

We understand this is a rather inconvenient disruption but know we will all appreciate the end result!

AIRPORT SAFETY GROUP

As mentioned in our September newsletter, we're hosting an open-house style meeting for airport users to collaborate on safety issues affecting the airport and how to address them.

Our first meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 7 from 11-12pm at Airport Management offices (4400 Highway 21).

Any and all are welcome to attend!

We'll use this first meeting to discuss our top safety issues, determine frequency of future meetings, and set goals for the group.

2024 RATES & CHARGES

The City of San Marcos has approved updated 2024 rates and charges for annual rentals. These rates will go into effect January 1, 2024. The airport website has been updated to reflect the new rates.

AIRPORT SPEED LIMIT

Thank you to those users who have made a concerted effort to mind their speed both on Airport Drive and the ramp.

Having said that, we continue to see issues in both areas.

Our landscapers have seen folks on the Airport Drive straightaway exceed 85 miles per hour! This is incredibly dangerous not only for the driver but for the crews who are working hard to keep our airport looking good.

Equally as important, please do not exceed 15mph on the ramp. There are blind areas around hangars and a collision with an aircraft - or person - is very possible.

These rules are in place to protect all of our tenants, users, and aircraft; your adherence is imperative.

BUILD-TO-SUIT HANGAR AVAILABILITY

Following a Request for Proposals process, Council recently approved a build-to-suit agreement with Don Jackson Construction for the construction of over 55,000 square feet of hangar space in the Kilo Development Area.

A sign is up at the airport entrance and those interested can contact Tony Jackson at (254) 644-7935.

AIRPORT ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

Our next AAB meeting will be held Thursday, January 18 at 10:00am at the Airport Management Offices located 4400 Highway 21. Anyone interested in the airport is encouraged to attend.

Come for the coffee and donuts; stay to learn more about what's happening at your airport!

NEW AIRPORT SHIRTS ARE HERE!

We're happy to report our newest (FREE) airport t-shirts are available!

Feel free to swing by the Airport Management office during the week to grab yours!
