Restoration Coffee Wins Best Coffee Shop in the
South Shore!

July 23rd, Restoration Coffee won best coffee shop in the South Shore and the owner, Matt Wood, was excited to share their news and thank supporters: " I’d like to thank my customers, friends, and family. They all have supported me so much. We love our products and strive to make them fantastic every day. I love how the area has really taken us under their wing."
Restoration Coffee strives to give the best service and also works closely with suppliers to achieve this. They buy coffee from suppliers who work directly with farmers and help educate farmers on the best growing practices. This way the farmer can make as much money as they can for their beans.
The ins and outs of this shop have made this award possible, along with its loyal local followers. "People were telling me that they voted. I found the magazine at Stop and Shop and was floored and very proud."
It's very exciting to have an EB store win this award and get this much attention throughout the South Shore. Stop in today for one of their amazing lattes! Matt's favorite go-to drink of theirs is an iced Americano, so be sure to try that too! facebook.com/RestorationcoffeeEB

Historical Tidbit:
1973 Sesquicentennial Celebration

The commemorative booklet from East Bridgewater's 150 year Anniversary documents the week-long celebration that took place June 9 - 16, 1973.  It details every day of celebration, including a reenactment of a Methodist Service led by a "Circuit Preacher" who rode up just in time for service on a horse; a water show at the YMCA pool, a Canoe race, and more exhibits and displays than you can shake a stick at. Thirty-four pages describe events and happenings.

Throughout the booklet, names jump out... Dale Julius, Indian Dance Team... Olde Candy Shop Float by Paula Coffey Dance Studio... Bob McCarthy sets up for the Chicken Barbecue at the Commercial Club (serving nearly 3,000 people) which featured an Alumni Concert conducted by Richard Whitmarsh.

A favorite passage is the description of the hayride, pulled by Edmond "Brother" Kenneally's three draft horses, Chief, Dick and Ed. "The rides were such a tremendous success that at one point a police officer was summoned to quell the crowd." Nothing like a hayride to bring out the animal in all of us.

A time capsule from the event, stored in the safe at the Town Hall, will be opened in the year 2023. Time sure does fly when you're having fun.

Welcome East Bridgewater United Methodist Church's Newest Pastor

Rev. Alicia Velez Stewart is currently serving as Pastor of the Bridgewater Center and is excited to add East Bridgewater UMC to her appointment, effective July 1st 2020.

Pastor Alicia grew up in Lakeville, MA where her father still resides. Also from the area is her husband, Bryan, who is originally from Whitman. Bryan is part of the TMLP Online team as well as a programmer. They both enjoy exploring outdoors and traveling. Pastor Alicia is a kayaker and the Stewart family loves camping, bike riding, and caring for the small zoo they have at home (a pug, a giant cat, a turtle, and 4 chickens)!

A life- long United Methodist, Pastor Alicia earned a BA from Suffolk University in Government and has her M.Div. from Boston University where she graduated cum laude in 2018. Immediately prior to her appointment as pastor at Bridgewater Center, she was the Family Ministry Coordinator for Shepherd of the Valley UMC in Hope, RI. In addition to her appointment as pastor of BUMC, she is active at Camp Aldersgate in Glocester, Ri, as the Pastor-in-Residence & theological supervisor, as well as the chair of the Greater Bridgewater Interfaith Council.

Pastor Alicia, Bryan, and their four children-- Shawn (19), Gabriela (9), Diego (9), and Alexander (8) -- are really looking forward to being in ministry with East Bridgewater UMC.

FULLER CRAFT MUSEUM PRESENTS
Shelter, Place, Social, Distance
Contemporary Dialogues from the Permanent Collection

August 6– November 22, 2020
(August 6 Museum opens to the general public.)

“The long path from material through purpose to creative work has only a single goal: To create order out of the godforsaken confusion of our time.” —Mies van der Rohe,  Not at Home , 1938

Since the initial outbreak in Wuhan, China, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented disruption around the world, from economic uncertainty to national public health emergencies to mandated quarantines. As the global community struggled to make sense of it all, an explosion of new words and phrases emerged. This pervasive terminology—shelter in place, social distancing, flatten the curve, PPE, and more—offered a practical shorthand with which to frame the rapidly changing world and united us through shared cultural touch points.

While many terms are inextricably associated with the pandemic, certain words, when decontextualized, represent recurring themes in contemporary craft. In this regard,  Shelter, Place, Social, Distance: Contemporary Dialogues from the Permanent Collection  adopts the COVID-19 lexicon as a conceptual springboard for exploring how the universal subjects of home, place, community, and distance are represented in Fuller Craft Museum’s permanent collection.

Fuller Craft Museum is honored to present these extraordinary objects as we welcome visitors back to our galleries following the COVID-19-related museum shutdown. Like all great works of art, the forms invigorate our understanding of the times in which we live.
Saying good-bye to Lynne

Lynne Ridder Oakley passed away in her home with family on July 14, at the age of eighty-four. She was the middle child and only daughter of the late George A. Ridder and Dorothy B. Ridder. Lynne grew up on her family’s farm, Ridder Farm, with her two brothers Richard Ridder and the late Jon Ridder.
She was a graduate of East Bridgewater High School, class of 1954 and went on to pursue her life long career as a Registered Nurse attending the Brockton Hospital School of Nursing.
In the fall of 1957, Lynne married her high school sweetheart, the late Donald A. Oakley, who was a history teacher in East Bridgewater after serving four years in the US Coast Guard. They settled in the town where they were both born, and raised their three children. Lynne is survived by her children, Peter T. Oakley, his wife Kathy, David A. Oakley, from East Bridgewater and Karen L. Oakley and life partner Mary Baggao who reside in Sedona, Arizona.
Lynne was the Florence Nightingale of East Bridgewater and best known for her service as the school nurse throughout her career-caring for people young and old all of her life.
She was an active lifetime member and believer at the Union Congregational Church where she was dearly loved and worshiped faithfully every Sunday.
Lynne will always be held closely in the hearts and in the lifetime of memories of everyone she loved. May that carry with her as she transitions, according to her faith.

Lynne Oakley's Memorial Luncheon

On July 14 th , long-time East Bridgewater resident, Lynne Ridder Oakley, was laid to rest at the Northville Cemetery in E. B. As many of you know, Lynne was known as the Florence Nightingale of East Bridgewater. She was not only the school nurse for many years, she was also the nurse for the neighborhood kids for many years. Following the wonderful funeral service at the cemetery, the Wednesday Standish Grille over-80 group joined the family for a luncheon at Meadow Brook restaurant in Hanson. All but two of our group attended the luncheon: Shirley Stinchfield, Betty Stirling, Carol Owen, Barbara Dearing, Caroline Madden, Phyllis Jezard, and Lois Clark. Lynne will be sorely missed by our group, which gathers every Wednesday noontime at Standish.

Sand in Your Shorts

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever. ~ Jacques Yves Cousteau

At the beach, life is different. Time doesn’t move hour to hour but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun.
~ Sandy Gingras

The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul.
~ Robert Wyland

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

You’re not a wave, you’re a part of the ocean.
~ Mitch Albom
Hey folks, it's 10 degrees cooler at the beach, just in case you didn't know....
And if you can't get to the beach, a kiddie pool (for your feet), a beach chair, a fan and ice cream, and, well, some sand in your shorts will have to do! : )
Have a great week! ~ Jacquie
