The Early Development of the town of Whitman

During its early development, the Town of Whitman was largely an agricultural community. The first industry developed on the downstream side of the Schumatuscacant river. It was in this area that the first industrial canal and tunneling of the colony were constructed in 1745. Trees from the town's forests provided a source of timber for several seaport towns. Timbers from Whitman were used to construct the frigate U.S.S. Constitution also known as Old Ironsides. The town soon developed into an important manufacturing center. The first shoe racks were manufactured, cannon balls were cast at Colonel Hobart's Bell and Cannon Foundry, nails and tacks were made, and wooden boxes were built. During the 1800s, many cottage industries established in the 1700s began to develop into larger businesses. By the mid-1800s, several of these businesses grew into large scale assembly line factories. At one time, the Dunbar, Hobart, and Whidden Tack factory, erected in 1864, was the largest in the world. The D.B. Gurney Company dates back to 1825 and is still in operation in Whitman today. The leading manufactured products were shoes and boots. The shoe industry and related industries became the largest employer in the town, and remained as the largest employer until the mid-1900s at which time the shoe industry began it's steady decline.

Donating a wreath to Whitman PD

I donated my first wreath to Whitman PD this evening and it felt great! Police have my full support and always will. He was very grateful for the wreath and gesture and I hope I made him a little more hopeful for the future. I support our heroes in uniform who put their lives at risk everyday for me, for you and all of our families.

“The long path from material through purpose to creative work has only a single goal: To create order out of the godforsaken confusion of our time.” —Mies van der Rohe,  Not at Home , 1938

Since the initial outbreak in Wuhan, China, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented disruption around the world, from economic uncertainty to national public health emergencies to mandated quarantines. As the global community struggled to make sense of it all, an explosion of new words and phrases emerged. This pervasive terminology—shelter in place, social distancing, flatten the curve, PPE, and more—offered a practical shorthand with which to frame the rapidly changing world and united us through shared cultural touch points.

While many terms are inextricably associated with the pandemic, certain words, when decontextualized, represent recurring themes in contemporary craft. In this regard,  Shelter, Place, Social, Distance: Contemporary Dialogues from the Permanent Collection  adopts the COVID-19 lexicon as a conceptual springboard for exploring how the universal subjects of home, place, community, and distance are represented in Fuller Craft Museum’s permanent collection.

Fuller Craft Museum is honored to present these extraordinary objects as we welcome visitors back to our galleries following the COVID-19-related museum shutdown. Like all great works of art, the forms invigorate our understanding of the times in which we live.
Vote By Mail

Look for the application in your mailbox or here is a link to download the application .
In July, a new law was passed to allow all registered voters in Massachusetts to vote by mail in any 2020 election, with no excuse needed.
As required by the new law, a Vote by Mail application will be mailed to every person who was registered to vote by July 1 and who had not already requested an absentee ballot for the State Primary or for all elections this year. A second mailing will be sent out in September to all voters who have not already applied for a Vote by Mail ballot for the November election. The applications are pre-addressed to your local election official and no postage is necessary.

Vote by Mail applications must be delivered to your local election office no later than 4 business days before the election. For a State Primary ballot, your application must reach your local election office no later than August 26. For a State Election ballot, your application must reach your local election office no later than October 28.
If you wish to vote by mail, you are strongly encouraged to return your application as early as possible, to make sure that you will receive your ballot in time to return it and have it be counted.

Vote by Mail applications are available for  download  and may also be requested by  contacting the Elections Division .
You can find more information on voting by mail on our  Voting by Mail FAQs  page.

Congratulations to Miley and her human, Tammy Bengin from Whitman, for winning.

Mia Hood, a Golden Retriever who happens to belong to Devin Hood, participates in the Plymouth 4th of July Parade every year. Because of COVID, the parade was canceled, so the Hood family decided to would let Mia hold a Fourth of July Photo Contest for dogs instead.
The response was unbelievable! We had so many people send in photos of their dogs dressed up for the Fourth. It was so hard to choose!
The Hood Family, along with the crew, picked the dogs from all of the pictures we received. The three (3) dogs with the most votes won the ice cream and the five (5) dogs that had the most amount of votes after them won the gift cards .

Hey folks, it's 10 degrees cooler at the beach, just in case you didn't know....
And if you can't get to the beach, a kiddie pool (for your feet), a beach chair, a fan and ice cream, and, well, some sand in your shorts will have to do! : )
