Gearing up for a Week of

Gratitude and Celebration

We do our best to thank our valuable volunteers daily at Habitat, but we thank them a little louder a couple of times each year. National Volunteer Appreciation Week is one of those times, and it happens to coincide with some other exciting events at Habitat this year, so we decided to lean into the chaos!

That said, we invite you to celebrate with us during Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 21-26. We will thank our volunteers throughout the week and celebrate all they make possible for the Habitat mission.

We will start on Tuesday, April 22nd, as our ReStore “hardcore volunteers” (a special classification we use for volunteers who spend more than 50 hours a year with us and are generally weekly volunteers) will enjoy a light breakfast and recognition event, followed by our ReStore Grand Reopening for shoppers at 10 am.

For the past couple of months, our team has been installing new shelving and lighting to create an even better shopping experience for you. To signify our 22 years of operation, the first 22 shoppers of the day will receive a 50% off one item coupon for use that day, in addition to other sales.

We will kick off our annual Apostles Build with Pastor’s Day on Thursday. Special thanks to St. Joseph of the Pines for sponsoring breakfast and lunch for our pastors. Apostles Build is a unique home build funded and constructed by local church volunteers. Contact us to learn how your church can become part of this local mission.

On Friday, all are invited to the opening of our newest roads, named after longtime volunteers Freida May and Nancy. The roads are in Addor (travel South from US 1 to Addor Rd). Join their families as we celebrate these two wonderful women and two of our homebuyers, who are among the first five to build in this community. Festivities begin at 5 pm, and we will have home tours, light refreshments, and good vibes.

We wrap up the week with our Annual Gala and Auction on Saturday, and if you missed your chance to attend this year’s event, mark your calendar for next April 25th.

Within 60 days, we will sell five homes to new homebuyers with guaranteed affordable mortgages. These beautiful homes will be part of a 12-home subdivision in Addor. They will be part of a revitalization effort and response to that community’s request for Habitat to help bring young families to the area. Many of the homes look out onto the green pastures of Aurora Hills. The long cul-de-sac will be a community where families who met and worked together while building their homes will continue a home ownership journey together – likely celebrating additional milestones, graduations, and other events in the future.

APOSTLES BUILD: PAST AND PRESENT

Since its start in the Sandhills as an ecumenical Christian ministry, Habitat for Humanity has engaged the local faith community. Some churches are moved to partner with our Aging in Place program, helping to fund and volunteering to build wheelchair ramps or providing other critical home repairs for elderly or disabled community members. Many choose to focus their investment of time and treasure through our Apostles Build, now held every spring. This build aims to gather 12 churches or coalitions of churches to offset some of the cost of one home built annually. Additionally, churches provide volunteer helpers in the actual building process.

Our 2025 Apostles Build will be one of twelve houses already underway in the small community of Addor, just south of Pinebluff. The new homes will truly be transformative for the families who will be the new homeowners and the community of Addor. As in the past two years, this year's build kicks off with Pastor's Day on Thursday, April 24, when our local church leaders will share a day of fellowship and building. The build continues over the remaining spring and summer months, each weekend populated with volunteers from many different churches. A dedication of the home is slated for the fall.

Although our average total home cost now exceeds $200,000, we keep our full home sponsorship amount of $70,000. The home buyers' future mortgage payments and proceeds from our successful ReStore can fund the remaining costs. A full Apostle partner church provides $6,000 (or 1/12 of the full sponsorship) or more, toward the build along with an entire weekend of volunteers within the 3-month building schedule.

We are grateful to many local churches, some of whom have been participating in this building for decades and others new to Habitat. Volunteer Dan Joslin and his committee organize the build and keep everyone in touch with Habitat happenings throughout the year with regular Faith Relations meetings held at various partner churches. For many years, the lunches have provided a small group setting where questions can be answered and ideas brainstormed about how Habitat's mission can best be carried out in line with our faith community for the Apostles Build.

Always open to new partners joining in, whether through donations, volunteer building, or both, the following is a listing of current 2025 Apostles build partners:

2025 Volunteer Challenge

At Habitat for Humanity, every volunteer plays a crucial role in helping us create safe, affordable housing for families in our community. Whether you're swinging a hammer at a build site, assisting customers at the ReStore, or keeping our operations running smoothly behind the scenes, your time and dedication make a real impact.

We invite you to be part of something bigger—bring your neighbors, friends, family, and coworkers along! Help us reach our goal this year.

No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to help and a heart for service. Join us today and see how you can make a difference. Together, we can build more than houses—we can build hope, stability, and brighter futures.

It's a fun opportunity to meet like-minded friends who support affordable housing. May 15th at 5:00 pm, to learn about Habitat's volunteer opportunities. Whether you enjoy the outdoors and hands-on construction or working in the ReStore, we can custom-fit an experience that you will find rewarding and fun! We know volunteer opportunities are abundant in Moore County. We strive to make your time a rewarding and beneficial experience at Sandhills Habitat.
