Homebuyer Service Team

Announces August Open Session

Sandhills Habitat works with people making between 30% and 80% of the Area Median Income to build and purchase homes with affordable mortgages. These homebuyers come from diverse backgrounds but share a common dream of owning a home.  We partner with homebuyers because on their financial qualifications and do not discriminate against applicants based on their race, color, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, religion, or disability. Our path to homeownership is a comprehensive process that requires dedication, hard work, and time.

The Mission of the Sandhills Habitat Homebuyer Selection Team is to identify and assist qualified families in becoming homebuyers. This team meets throughout the year to continually evaluate the homebuyer recruitment and selection process, making it as streamlined and straightforward as possible for potential candidates. When applications are received, the Homebuyer Selection Team confirms that families meet the current qualifications, can make mortgage payments, and then schedules home visits. During a home visit, application information is verified, housing needs are ascertained, and the applicant’s willingness to partner with Habitat is assessed. Each partnering family is expected to complete the 200-hour sweat equity requirement and participate in education classes. This team also assists in the bi-annual financial review of current Homebuyers-in-Progress and the economic evaluation of applicants for the Aging in Place repair program.

Our Sandhills Habitat Homebuyer Selection Team is currently made up of: Christy Brewster (Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills Volunteer & Homeowner Services Coordinator), Tom Allen, Mary Chapman, Susan Credle, Maureen Glouster, Maria Greth, Kelly Hutchison, Kay Labare, Sarah Lawson, Mamie LeGrand, Kayla Prestwood, Helen Probst-Mills, Bobby Pulgarin, Sue Ralston, Joyce Ray, Mary Rocca, Candace Taylor, and Tracy Thomas. The team is collaborating to automate the homeowner application process while refining the application screening and selection process. Online applications open on August 1st. Verifications and in-person visits must be completed by mid-September to allow for final decisions to be made before the end of the month.

If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, please visit the services section of our website for more information. Be prepared, August is not far away!

With Gratitude,

Sandhills Homebuyer Selection Team

Community Presbyterian Church

Where are They?

If you were to ask where Community Presbyterian Church (CPC) is located, the answer you would most likely get is in Pinehurst, at 125 Everette Road. That answer would be correct regarding the physical building location, but it wouldn't be a complete answer.

Some time ago, CPC did a mission study. They asked about the needs in the surrounding community, where they were called, and how they were positioned to serve. They discovered that their strengths, talents, and gifts positioned them to serve children and youth in the community who are at risk.

CPC has been actively addressing its defined mission in the community and has since partnered with numerous companies, nonprofits, and community organizations such as listed below.

Brookside Apartment

Camp Munroe and Retreat Center

The Crop Walk

Moore Free & Charitable Clinic.

Community Assisting Language Learners

CPC will be partnering with West End Presbyterian for a 3-day work session with Habitat's Apostle Build home in Addor, led by Senior Pastor Rod Stone.

"A blessing for our church," shares Pastor Meghan Vail, when discussing the mission and ministries of CPC. She adds, "I think Mission is faith development, and there is a real sense of serving the community that is a real joy."

It's no surprise that the small print under Community Presbyterian Church is "Loving God, Serving Others." And it is a complicated question when one asks, "Where is Community Presbyterian Church?"

Pastor's Day Build 2025

A Full House of God's Hands and Feet

Pastors from local churches joined us for "Pastors Day", which marks the beginning of the Apostles Build. This coalition of churches works together to raise funds for materials and recruit volunteers to build a home for a partnering family. Together, we raised the walls for the Tyler family. A special thanks to St. Josephs of the Pines for providing breakfast and lunch for our hardworking crew.

Road Dedication in Addor

Nancy Court

Freida May Lane

Bright Meadows

In our "Bright Meadows" community in Addor, the two roads have officially been named. We extend our gratitude to all the volunteers and supporters who participated in this significant Habitat event. Nancy Kees and Freida May Powers dedicated over 5,000 hours to our mission and have long been icons of the ReStore! Thank you to John Bright for facilitating the purchase.

Meet a few of our "hardcore" construction volunteers who are the powerhouse behind the scene. These men, among others, commit to building Habitat homes by volunteering on a weekly basis. Volunteers are considered hardcore when they contribute at least 50 hours of service. These three men have over 2,300 combined volunteer hours, a remarkable testament to our volunteer experience on the construction site.

Duane Chrismer is a retired Army Senior Advisor who was previously based in Chicago and moved to the Sandhills about six years ago. Although Duane has only been with us for two years, he has accumulated over 460 volunteer hours. He says that his goal is to complete over 300 hours of work a year. At that rate, he will soon have a street named after him!

David Drummond is recently retired and, after 30 years in Huntersville, NC, north of Charlotte, has purchased a second home in Whispering Pines with his wife, Renne. They are "transitioning" from the Charlotte area. David has volunteered over 400 hours in four years, appreciating the camaraderie among the Habitat team the most! He also enjoys playing pickleball and hiking.

Jeff Heep has been with us for over 10 years and has accumulated 1,500 volunteer hours despite not yet retiring. Jeff is a medical device consultant and certified project manager. Like many of our Habitat family who have migrated south, he is from the Windy City, where he also volunteered for Habitat. Jeff says what he appreciates most is our organized process when it comes to building and teaching volunteers.

These men serve as mentors to volunteers who come to the construction site, helping our supervisors train and ensure everyone's safety. If you have a heart for Habitat, please sign up at our website to experience the joy of doing something good!

Thank you to all the volunteers on the construction site, in the ReStore, in the office, or serving on a committee. We are well on track to meet our 2025 goal!  Your volunteer hours make a profound difference in the Sandhills. You help raise the money needed to purchase building materials and some of the swing hammers used to build the homes.

Invite your friends, neighbors, or co-workers to join you. Seeing is believing, and we have the best volunteer experiences in the Sandhills!

So many ways to volunteer at Habitat it may surprise you. No matter your passion we have a place for you to use your skills.

It's a fun opportunity to meet like-minded friends who support affordable housing. June 19th at 5:00 pm, you may learn about Habitat's volunteer opportunities. Whether you enjoy the outdoors and hands-on construction or working in the ReStore, we can custom-fit an experience that you will find rewarding and fun! We know volunteer opportunities are abundant in Moore County. We strive to make your time a rewarding and beneficial experience at Sandhills Habitat.

No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to help and a heart for service. Join us today and see how you can make a difference. Together, we can build more than houses—we can build hope, stability, and brighter futures.
