Habitat Gala and Auction

April 26th at Pinehurst Country Club

You won't find any OSHA-approved footwear among these volunteers when they are doing their Habitat work! Meet a few faces behind the signature fundraising event that raises enough funds to build a home and provide several critical home repairs each year. For over 20 years, Habitat has hosted a special event, including fine dining and cocktails, unique experiences, a fabulous auction, and dancing. It's a chance for our best friends to join together for a night of celebration and recommitment to our goal of building and preserving affordable housing. You will meet some women responsible for this great event in the next two issues. First is our Gala Chair, Kim Sutton, who moved to the Sandhills with her husband and son in 2021. A mortgage lender by day, Kim notes that she has made affordable housing near and dear to her heart. She enjoys supporting a wonderful cause and meeting some amazing people in her new community.

Fellow Main Street Home Loans lender and former Gala Chair Karen Dulmage recruited Kim. Karen is originally from the DC area. The military (her husband's career) brought their family here in 2012. They have two busy boys and demanding careers, but giving back to Habitat has afforded her another rewarding way to help families into the American dream of homeownership. She has also served on the Board of Directors for Habitat for six years!

Meredith is a newer addition to the team, but she has already been an incredible part of it. She put her skills as a personal trainer to work as she donated the fitness package that fetched one of the highest bids of the evening last year. She's also a mom to active boys—3! We're seeing a theme—these ladies clearly needed an outlet to flex their fancy side! We are grateful for their hard work and talent.

Peace and Grace,

Amie N. Fraley

Something for Everyone at the Auction

" If you haven’t attended before, you are in for a TRUE treat this year. Our auction block has some sought-after private golf club trips for all you golfers. And for those of you who dream of vacations (like me), we have the mountains, the lake, and the beach—so many things to offer our amazing bidders this year!

For the party planners and entertainers extraordinaire, like our dear Gatsby, you’re going to find some stellar auction items, including a catered party for all your guests in a restored and renovated church, a gorgeous dinner for your friends or family at one of our newest town hotspots, or a fabulous catered dinner for you and your closest friends at home - you really can’t go wrong!

This is just the tip of the iceberg, so don’t forget to buy your tickets to see what else we have in store!"

Apostles Build Task Force

The passing of President Jimmy Carter was a loss felt by millions around the globe and indeed throughout the Habitat for Humanity organization. President Jimmy and Mrs. Rosalynn Carter were champions and groundbreaking voices for affordable, decent housing for all, donating their time and leadership each year to build and improve homes through Habitat's Carter Work Project for over 30 years. Together, they worked alongside nearly 110,000 volunteers who have built, renovated, or repaired more than 4,447 homes in 14 countries, all while raising awareness of the critical need for affordable housing. Habitat's Apostles Build task force members were asked what made them grateful to volunteer.

"I find joy in bringing opportunities for fellowship involving many and diverse segments of the faith community. At all our Habitat Apostles gatherings, the function of Habitat is to build them up and give a positive focus for them and their church members. Early on, I had it the other way around. What could the churches do for Habitat? I've now flipped that script and emphasized what Habitat brings to the Table of Fellowship."

-Dan Joslin, Habitat Faith Relations Coordinator

"I am grateful to be able to help with Apostles Build alongside the home buyers because it helps them build wealth and be able to contribute to the community we live in. I have been blessed by having others help me achieve my goals, and I want to give that experience to others. Our faith calls us to build up others with compassion and support."

-Debbie Whitley, Task force member

"It has been a learning experience, and I realize I still have a lot to learn about the complexities of how our Habitat works. I have a deep appreciation, though, of all the work that gets done behind the scenes and the accomplishments of our local organization. I am grateful for the opportunity to bring diverse folks together for a common purpose and to see the happiness of those who are helped. It has been a joy to find a way to put some of my beliefs, inspired while in the pew, into action."

-LuAnn Kinney, Task force member

"I love how people come together for a common purpose and share time, regardless of faith background. No matter what our faith story is, we're one church. The Apostle's Build demonstrates that."

Gerald Ostlund, Task force member and Videographer

"What is the true meaning of Christmas? Is it that God so loved the world that he sent Christ to show his love to us? What's that got to do with Habitat, you ask? Well, Habitat is the gift and opportunity to our Churches to show their love and make God's love known to others. It is this opportunity to serve and give others the gift of love!!"

- Gary Popson, Task force member

"I thought I had a pretty good understanding of Habitat for Humanity when I was first invited to join other volunteers from my church to work on a new house. But in the years since then, I've gained a deep appreciation for the rich experience known as an Apostles Build. Relationships inspired by faith and nurtured by mutual support are at the heart of this amazing enterprise. Habitat means manifesting God's love in our community, from the dedicated administrative staff and skilled construction teams to the eager volunteers and new homeowners who work alongside us."

-Bob Howell, Task force member, and Apostles Build Volunteer Scheduler

Meet Our Super Hero - Mary Chapman

Mary has been with Habitat for over ten years and is approaching 2,000 hours as a ReStore volunteer. But wait, there's more. Mary also diligently works on the Home Owner Selection Committee. If you see Mary in the ReStore, please introduce yourself and ask her more about becoming a Habitat Volunteer. Our volunteers are our best advocates for our mission!

"I am originally from Chatham, NY. It is about 30 miles SE of Albany. I spent 28 years in South Florida. I am now a North Carolinian, having lived here since 1995. Before volunteering at Habitat, I worked all my life as a secretary/administrative assistant. I have worked for manufacturing operations in NY as a florist, for an attorney, insurance company, and real estate developer. I retired in 2013 while working for FirstHealth Hospice. I enjoy golfing, walking my neighbor's dog, cooking, and entertaining. Years ago, I promised God and myself that if I was healthy when I retired, I would use my skills to help my community. I tried a few other volunteer positions before finally landing at Habitat. I started in the front office in approximately 2015 but found myself really enjoying working in the ReStore. Having been homeless for a short time in my very young years, I love the fact that Habitat works to help provide safe and affordable housing to hardworking people."
