2024 Habitat Gala and Auction
A Record-Breaking Success
On April 27th, our signature fundraising event, Habitat Gala and Auction, provided funding for two Habitat homes as we surpassed $270,000 of net proceeds! Local families can purchase a home with a guaranteed affordable mortgage or receive a critical repair, allowing them to age in place safely. The night was full of energy and generosity – and we are grateful for our supporters!
Pinehurst Resort CEO Tom Pashley announced their generous investment in our plans at Habitat. Tom said, "Habitat is taking a bold step with the development of Sandhills Station. Pinehurst shares this vision and wants to take a bold step by supporting the project." He explained that Pinehurst will donate all the tee times on June 10th at the newly opened Course No. 10 to Habitat for sale and will even match the sales up to $100,000. Tom's announcement was met with a heartfelt standing ovation from the guests, a true testament to the impact of the donation. The room filled with warmth and applause, underscoring the significance of the moment.

Don't Delay! Only Six Spots Remaining!
We are thrilled to have local partners like Pinehurst, FirstHealth, Moore County Schools, The Town of Aberdeen, and others making this unique planned community possible.
| |
We sincerely thank this year's gala co-chairs, Lori West and Kim Sutton. These two remarkable women, with their busy schedules, led a committee that worked tirelessly to create a memorable evening for our guests. From the putting contest on the practice green with the backdrop of US Open tents to the specialty cocktails and themed décor, their Gowns and Golf evening was a resounding success! We invite you to consider joining the committee that brings this special night together. And if you're looking forward to partying with us again next year, please mark your calendars for Saturday, April 26th, at Pinehurst Country Club.
Many thanks to Dale Moegling talented photography! Click here to see more photos.

Affordable Housing is an Investment in Community
By building and restoring safe, clean and healthy housing, Habitat works to eliminate children’s experiences of substandard housing, thereby supporting their growth and development.
— Boston College’s Rebekah Levine Coley and Tufts University’s Tama Leventhal

Growing up in a decent, affordable home can have a powerful effect on children. Studies draw a straight line between the quality, location and affordability of housing and a child’s ability to thrive. On the other hand, low-quality housing — often accompanied by pests, poor ventilation, lack of heat and other detrimental factors — has been strongly linked to physical health problems for children.
In addition, the stress that parents experience due to living in poor conditions can translate into emotional and behavioral problems in their children. Children whose families who are forced to move frequently in search of better, more affordable living situations often struggle. And parents paying too much for a place to live too often must deplete financial resources that otherwise could be invested in their children’s health, education and future.
While the impact of home ownership on children’s academic achievement in grade school has been well-documented, new research suggests that people who grow up in a family owned home have better economic outcomes in middle age. The study found that adults whose mothers owned homes were more than 1.5 times more likely to own their own homes and to have attained higher education. These adults also were less likely to be receiving public assistance, compared to adults whose mothers did not own homes.

Faith in Action Fills Our Build Days
United Ways "Day of Giving" in September
| |
Freedom Baptist Church in Rockingham hosted our May Faith Relations Lunch. Dan Joslin, Habitat Faith Relations Coordinator, welcomed everyone and thanked the church for serving as host, in particular, the hospitality team for the meal being provided, which was blessed by Deacon Earnest Strickland.
We appreciate the tremendous support the Richmond County faith community provides to Habitat's efforts in both Moore and Richmond County. We hope to have a Habitat event in Richmond County that involves a broad spectrum of churches. Michelle Parrish, Executive Director of Richmond County United Way, spoke about their United Way Days of Caring, running the weekend of September 12-14, 2024, and collaborating with Habitat on house builds in Rockingham.
|
Farrah Newman, Habitat Construction Director, and General Contractor was there to review various aspects of Habitat houses, including their energy efficiency, higher-than-standard construction requirements, and the SF range of 1100 to 1300 square feet. She emphasized the importance of the early days in the builds, as they set a good timeline for the remaining build days.
Christy Brewster, Habitat Volunteer and Homeowner Services Coordinator, then reviewed the advantages of registering on our website to volunteer. Preregistration expedites the start of the work day and keeps volunteers informed of any changes due to weather or other emergencies. Dan then issued the challenge and asked twelve clergy to pledge their time on Thursday, September 12. The pastors began to respond immediately, filling all twelve spots within minutes.
Our next meeting in Richmond County will be on October 16 at First Methodist Church of Rockingham; our next Moore County meetings are on September 18 at Community Presbyterian and November 20 at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian.
