Update from Our Director
Gala Season is here!
As we celebrate the warmer weather, so do we celebrate all that is good in the Sandhills. We know you have many worthy causes to support, and we hope you will keep the 2024 Habitat Gala and Auction on Saturday, April 27th, on your calendar!
As our signature fundraising event, the gala has historically supported the cost of at least one build in our upcoming year. It is a fun night to celebrate the past year and to look ahead. Sponsors kick off the evening with a special hour of music, cocktails, appetizers, and themed gift bags while overlooking the beautiful Pinehurst #2 where we will host the 2024 US Open this June. This year's theme is “Golf and Gowns,” so join in the fun!

Affordable housing seems to be on the minds of many more individuals in recent years, and for good reason – the cost and the demand for housing in our community and many others has skyrocketed. In fact, a home we recently recycled for resale that was initially built in 2018 appraised 94% higher than its original appraisal just five years ago. These increases impact Habitat’s ability to serve families with a guaranteed affordable mortgage because we ensure all property tax and insurance costs included in the homebuyer’s escrow payments are covered before we can recoup any of the principal of their loan. These elevated appraisal and tax values translate to higher property taxes and insurance – leaving less to go toward future builds. It’s a challenging time, but we are working to address this challenge creatively. Your support at the gala or in any way is appreciated. Gala is undoubtedly one of the most elegant ways to support our mission, and we promise a fun-filled evening of fine dining, dancing, and cheering on the auction bidders (or being one yourself)!
Come build with us!

2024 Women Build Empower Brunch Sold-Out!
Thank you to everyone who participated!
In February, we had the pleasure of hosting an event that brought together over one hundred guests. During the event, our panelists shared their stories of challenges and successes, reminding us that we all face struggles in life. However, they also emphasized that we have the power to empower ourselves and others. It was an inspiring event that left us feeling motivated to continue our mission of supporting and uplifting each other.
We honored Mrs. Sally Brown for the incredible seven years she volunteered as the Women Build Chair and introduced Mrs. Linda Branch as the new chair, with Mrs. Sue Brown as her co-chair. Sally will continue to serve as a treasured advisor. If you want to volunteer with these dynamic women, please reach out us!

In 1991, a group of women in Charlotte, North Carolina, completed the first women-built Habitat for Humanity house. Sandhills Habitat is honored to have partnered with women of the community to sponsor and build eight homes in Moore County. The Women Build Committee is currently partnering with Tiara McKeithan to build her home in Aberdeen and is anticipating a Spring Dedication.
We want to thank everyone who attended and made this event a success. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.

Aging in Place Success Story
Location: Rockingham, North Carolina
Recipient: Andrew Short
Work Completed: Installation of HVAC and Doors replacements
| |
Mr. Andrew Short was the caregiver for his mother, Louise Short. Louise applied for the Urgent Repair Program (URP) during last year's 2022 application session. She was approved, but she passed before the start of the repairs. Andrew, a beneficiary of Louise's home, applied and qualified in our 2023 session. With our Urgent Repair Grant (URP) Funding, we were able to replace his failed HVAC system and two exterior doors, making his home comfortable and more energy efficient. Andrew was thankful for our assistance and complimentary of our subcontractors, Bailey's Home Improvement and AirRich Heating and Cooling. "Very knowledgeable and professional."

" I live in Pinebluff, North Carolina with my wife Catherine, to whom I have been happily married for almost 4 years. Originally from upstate New York and settled in North Carolina in 2016; I have served in the military for over 19 years, I am still currently serving in the South Carolina Army National Guard. I graduated from Sandhills Community College in May of 2020 with degrees in Civil Engineering Technology and Architectural Technology. During my time at school, I also completed an Internship with Habitat for Humanity during the summer 2019 and fell in love with their mission, and look forward to building many homes and a long career with Habitat." ~ Wesley
Apostles Build Kicks Off with Pastor's Day
Thursday, March 14th on 224 Page Cunningham Road
| |
February Faith Moment
Yesterday, I had a few communications with the pastor of a home owner in progress, HIP in Habitat parlance. Our faith TEAM invited the pastor to attend the kick off of the build for one of her members. The pastor wrote, “Thank you so much for the invite. I am honored to be invited and to be a part of this special moment for Shante. I will be in attendance. “
If this represented an outlying or unusual reaction to being invited to a modern day barn raising, it would not be worthy of comment. However with few exceptions, and I really cannot recall such, the joy expressed by home owners in progress all through the build process and home owners taking possession at a home dedication, is shared with everyone involved. God touches their lives and their joy touches ours. Thank you Lord.
I invite you to come join in this joy on one of our Apostles Build weekend days. Ask at your church if they are already signed up to help build. If so, a member will have been designated to assist in the registration process. If your church is not already a build partner, contact me at information below and I will direct you to our volunteer registration process.
