Happy New Year!

No sooner had we clanged the pots and pans to celebrate another busy year (fiscal year, that is) at Habitat for Humanity than we turned our focus to next year! We are grateful for your partnership, which allowed us to build 13 new homes sold to local families and provide nearly 50 critical home repairs to elderly and disabled community members during the year ending June 30th. We also built two roads this year, which will become home to 17 families over the next two years. Our ReStore exceeded expectations with over $1.4 million in sales, which not only helped fund half of the homes we built this year but also diverted items from landfills.

But that was last year! It’s time to look ahead and think about how we can serve our community best this year. Much of the planning is finalized as we head into our application session. This work is necessary, of course, to know just how many families we can serve in our next application sessions for home ownership and repair. We want to be a partner families can rely on when they are building and preserving a home with us, so we take great care in developing our land and securing critical home repair funding to maintain a consistent level of service to families in need.

We plan to build 13-14 new homes again this year and provide 50 critical home repairs. We have been spreading the word at information sessions across our Hoke, Richmond and Moore County service area. Although the sessions are not required, they have been a great place to answer questions in addition to visiting our website. Applications for new homeownership will be accepted through August 12th, and can be completed online at sandhillshabitat.org. Repair applications can be printed from here, or paper copies can be obtained at sandhillshabita.org.

Women Build Success Story

Drive it Home

The Women Build Committee hosted their third annual golf tournament at Forest Creek Golf Club in July! After months of preparation, golf enthusiasts and supporters came together for a day of friendly competition and fundraising for a great cause. We are grateful for the warm welcome and exceptional service the incredible team at Forest Creek extended to us. The event was a smashing success, bringing the community together to support women needing affordable housing. With clubs in hand and smiles all around, participants enjoyed a morning on the greens, knowing they were teeing up for a brighter future.  Congratulations to our fabulous Women Build team; thank you for all your hard work!

Habitat will break ground for the 10th Women Build sponsored home in late September in Addor. Women Build construction opportunities will be available on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the fall of 2024. Any woman who wants to learn how to build and construct a home is invited to join us. You don't need any experience. Volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals and alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners. Whether learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this experience is rewarding for all involved and improves the community we share.

Women Build is also a terrific way to involve your friends and family, ages 16 and older, in crucial work with a lasting impact. Women helping women sends a positive and powerful message. You can also come alone, and make new friends. The atmosphere is collaborative and friendly.

Aging in Place Success Story

Location: Vass, North Carolina

Recipient: Henry Dobbins

Work Completed: Replacement of Windows and Doors

Mr. Henry Dobbins is a lifelong resident of the Vass Community in Moore County and a recipient of assistance funded by our Urgent Repair Program (URP). Mr. Dobbins is a 1960 graduate of Moore County High School. He spent his first two years after graduation traveling the lower 48 states with a family friend who was a truck driver. He assisted with loading and unloading freight, and he received $40.00 for each trip, which he said was good money for a young kid during that time. Back then, a driver had to be 20 years old.

A company hired Mr. Dobbins to drive a dump truck he had kept for ten years. He still misses his days on the open road. He was employed by Estes Trucking as an over-the-road driver and held that position until his retirement in 2015.

Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills, with funding from URP, we were able to replace his failed windows and exterior doors, making his home more energy efficient. Mr. Dobbins was very pleased!

Your kindness inspires us!
