More than a Wonderful Round of Golf!
Significant Contribution to Affordable Housing
Sandhills Habitat is incredibly thankful to live in a community that appreciates the concept of giving back! Pinehurst hosted one of the most significant golf events of the year and enjoyed the national coverage of our town. The USGA, Pinehurst LLC, our vendors, and volunteers welcomed visitors openly. Amidst all the preparation, our partners Pinehurst Resorts and Dedman Family hosted a benefit for Sandhills Habitat at the new Pinehurst #10 on Opening Day! All proceeds went directly to Habitat to support the new affordable workforce housing project, Sandhills Station. The donation received a significant boost when they announced a matching donation that would double all contributions, ultimately reaching an impressive milestone of $200,000.

Congratulations to the 2024 Graduate!
When your family enjoys the stability of a safe and affordable place to call home, bigger dreams can begin to take shape. While many of our homebuyers were the first in their family to own a home, many of the children who grow up in a home built with Habitat are the first in their families to attend college. Congrats to the many young students pursuing higher education, and to their parents who have worked so hard to provide them with the opportunity to do so. As always, we are honored to join you in your journey and to celebrate your accomplishments!

Adam and Abigail are two of the many graduates who live or grew up in homes built and financed in partnership with Habitat. Adam recently graduated from Pinecrest High School and plans to pursue engineering as he heads to NC State in the fall. Abigail recently graduated from Duke with her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy. She plans to work with individuals with neurological and physical disability (inspired by her brother) at a Rehab hospital in San Antonio Texas.

Partnership, Perseverance, and Patience
Lead to the Promise of a New Home
| |
The annual Apostles Build through Habitat for Humanity of the Sandhills relies on partnerships. A community of churches contributes money and volunteers to help with the building, as well as hosting Faith Relations meetings. Aberdeen First Baptist Church is one of the partner churches so they know about Habitat and the homes Habitat builds. After moving to the area a couple of years ago, Ed and Vickie Mitchell began attending AFBC with their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren who were already members there.
|
With plans to purchase a house, the Mitchells learned that senior pastor Dr. Daryl Cornett’s wife, Cindy, was a realtor. They happily asked her to help them in their quest for a new home. Cindy worked hard to find something the couple could afford, and she persevered as long as they continued with hope. They even explored the possibility of building. But Moore County’s housing market was difficult. The Mitchells finally learned from Cindy that the chance of them ever finding a home to purchase was slim to none. She did have one idea, though. She suggested that they apply for a Habitat home.
“We just didn’t think we could possibly qualify for it,” explains Ed. Pastor Daryl also began to encourage them to consider it, periodically reminding them when the deadline for the applications was approaching. When he prodded them for the last time, the Mitchells decided they had nothing to lose.
The application process included meetings and paperwork and classes. Ed credits Vickie for getting it all together. When asked what the hardest part of the process was, Vickie said, “Waiting!” In October they found out that they had been accepted for a house. A commitment for each of them for their hours of sweat equity is in the process of being worked off by each of them. Vickie helps with building and Ed is volunteering at the ReStore.
Living in a travel trailer the last couple of years has required a lot of waiting and that waiting is not done. They continue to have the opportunity to practice patience but now the goal is clear. The promise of a new home, affordable and well-built, has become a reality for Ed and Vickie.

Aging in Place Success Story
Location: Jackson Springs, North Carolina
Recipient: Jesse Mae Capal
Work Completed: HVAC
| |
|
|
Habitat's Aging in Place repair program is making a significant impact by providing essential repair services to those in need, enabling them to maintain their independence and stay in the familiar comfort of their own homes. We are dedicated to ensuring that every individual receives the support they require to restore their living spaces and enhance their quality of life.
We may not think of air conditioning or heating until something goes wrong, but for seniors and disabled Veterans on a limited income, it can be devastating!
Habitat is proud to serve Jessie by installing a new HVAC system so that she is safe from the elements!
