2024 Pastors Day Kicks Off Apostles Built Home
LuAnn Kinney
From Pulpits and Prose to Hardhats and Hammers:
with Sandhills Habitat, Area Faith Leaders Build for a Local Family
The faith community of Moore County, through Habitat for Humanity of the N.C. Sandhills supports the construction of a house each year which becomes the home for a hardworking family. Known as the Apostles Build, support from churches is more than financial. Physical volunteer hours in the actual building are also part of the support given to help a family finish and purchase their new home.
Trading their pulpits for hardhats and hammers, the pastors gathered early on Thursday morning, March 14, for the 2024 Apostles Build kickoff in Aberdeen. The assembly quickly became a community in their singleness of purpose—sharing God’s love to help a family obtain a safe home. The stability of a safe home allows the family to focus more energy on their hopes and dreams and to participate more actively in the larger community. The pastors also encourage their parishioners to come out during the next nine weekends to help build this house. It will be an energy-efficient new home with a mortgage, guaranteed to be affordable.

“We are exceptionally blessed in Moore, Hoke and Richmond counties to have so many pastors willing to put their love of God into action,” explains Dan Joslin, Habitat Faith Relations Coordinator. “This year, we had 27 pastors working together and the future homeowner, Shante McLaughlin, all carefully supervised and directed by the amazing Habitat construction team. Her home is being built on a brand-new street, not even showing up yet on most GPS systems.

Fr. Morris Thompson of Emmanuel Episcopal church in Southern Pines expressed some of his experience with these words, “I had the joy of participating in Habitat for Humanity’s Pastors Day Build. Clergy from across the Sandhills gathered as a sign of Christian unity to support the ongoing (Habitat mission) of providing affordable housing to a community in desperate need. Together we learned, cut wood, drove nails (and of course pried and subsequently re-drove many nails). We helped build some of the early pieces of structural foundations that will become a home for the McLaughlin family. It was a joyful day…”

Page Cunningham Road Celebration!
Friday, April 5th | 8:00 am
| |
Join us in celebrating the kick-off of Page Cunningham Road in Aberdeen, off Keyser Street. The site honors two Hard Core Construction Volunteers, David Page and Mary Cunningham, who have invested over 5,000 hours each onsite to build affordable homes.
The lot was donated anonymously by a woman who had a fondness for bluebirds, and we will christen it "Bluebird Hill"! The land will become home to 10 families living or working in the Sandhills. Five homes were built last year on Keyser Street.
The first build, The Builder's Blitz, sponsored and built by local builders and suppliers, marks an essential milestone in the project, demonstrating the community's commitment to making affordable housing a reality for those in need. Please consider stopping by and sharing this joy-filled event with Habitat.

We are thrilled to share the success story of Ms. Karen Hines from Aberdeen. With the help of our Housing Preservation Grant (HPG), Ms. Hines was able to have her failed 3-tab shingled roof replaced with new architectural fiberglass shingles. Local volunteers also pitched in to replace several sheets of failed roof decking. Ms. Hines works part-time as a Front Desk Clerk at a nearby motel. She can now come home to a safe and secure home thanks to this much-needed repair.
