Week of Respect

October 2, 2024

Memo from the TLS Counselor's Office

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We are excited to announce that Thelma L. Sandmeier School will celebrate Week of Respect from October 7-11, 2024. This initiative, established in New Jersey in 2010 as part of the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act, aims to promote awareness about respect and the importance of preventing bullying. We will focus on understanding and applying respect in various situations throughout the week.

Students will identify different ways to be respectful both inside and outside of school. We have planned engaging activities in the classrooms, and a schedule of daily events is below for your reference.

Here’s a look at our themed days:

Monday, October 7th: “Stomp Out Bullying” #BLUEUP – Wear blue to show your support for World Day of Bullying Prevention.

Tuesday, October 8th: “Talk It Out Tuesday” – Wear your pajamas!

Wednesday, October 9th: “We Come Together Wednesday” -TEAM Up Against Bullying” – Wear your favorite sports/team clothing.

Thursday, October 10th: “Take A Stand Thursday” Standing Up to Bullying is No SWEAT” – Wear sweats to school.

Friday, October 11th: “Team Up - School Spirit Friday” Wear Orange/Blue to show your respect for TLS.

To help your child understand respect in different environments, please engage with the following prompts throughout the week:

  1. If you’re invited to a friend’s home for dinner, how can you show respect when you arrive, during the meal, and when you leave?
  2. What are three ways you can show your parents respect? Which do you practice most often, and which would you like to improve?
  3. What are three ways you can show your teacher respect? Circle at least one that you will practice in school tomorrow.

You can further support your child’s learning at home with these activities:

Acknowledge when your child uses respectful language or behavior by saying, “I appreciate how you said please and thank you. That’s very respectful.”

Encourage your child to reflect on instances throughout the day where they showed respect for themselves.

Discuss individuals they consider respectful and explore the qualities that make them so.

Your participation is invaluable, and we look forward to a meaningful week together!

Sincerely,

Marie Purcell
