Smoke Offering
It is very important to make use of whatever we experience as practice. Since we now experience wildfires, we can use the smoke as practice. Sang pūjā is a profound Vajrayāna smoke offering practice. The word sang in Tibetan means to remove, take away; purified, cleared, cleansed and awakened. Sang pūjā aids practitioners as a purification practice.
To perform this ritual, we focus on removing the impurities in our mindstream and all sentient beings. At the same time, we practice generosity by offering to all the ‘guests’: The Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma and Sangha), Three Roots (Lama, Yidam and Dakini), and Dharma protectors. We invite the guests of compassion, the beings of the six realms. And lastly we summon the guests with whom we have a connection of karmic debt. We should visualize the entire sky above us fills with all these invited guests, seated on cloud banks.

We then visualize the fragrant smoke appearing as limitless offerings of every desirable object. These objects can be anything that uniquely satisfies and cleanses the connection to each of the guests. Since we are not together to do a formal practice, I would suggest you ‘make up’ something according to your capability. Visualize the appropriate ‘guests’ in your experience. Make an offering of the smoke in the skies or use incense to purify the karma of all beings and to liberate fear during the wildfires.
It is important to do what we can to help those affected by the wildfires. Supporting aid organizations, offering tangible food and water, providing shelter if our circumstances permit—these are just a few possibilities. Of course, we do this with safety and awareness of Covid-19 precautions. Continuing our practice for the benefit of all beings is of immeasurable help.

Much love,
