Digital literacy, Solidarite Miami and more
Greetings!

April’s showers did not interrupt our workflow at Sant La. In addition to the usual in-house activities, we have resumed in-person community engagement activities. As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, our team has been attending multiple community events, and we are so happy to reconnect with the community we serve.

Digital Literacy Hub
Our commitment to bridging the digital divide proceed as we have strengthened our role as a community hub for digital navigation. Our Ann Pale Tek/Let’s Talk Tech initiative continues to grow. We partnered with TruConnect to provide clients with very low-cost tablets and sim cards to ensure connection to the internet. Our Digital Navigator provides hands on support and assistance to clients eager to manage their phone applications.

Solidarite Miami
We are very grateful to community partners who continue to address the health and legal needs of asylum seekers who arrived from the Mexican/US border. Thanks to the Haitian Lawyers Association (HLA), asylum seekers, are able to receive assistance from a Creole speaking, licensed immigration attorney.

While some migrants have qualified for resettlement benefits such as food assistance and medical insurance, many families have not. We are extremely thankful for the services offered to our clients by the Center for Haitian Studies-Health and Human Services (CHS). Many women crossed the border, in advanced stage of pregnancy without ever receiving pre-natal care. Many thanks to the CHS for medical attention offered to our pregnant clients.

Sant La’s Homecoming
On May 21, 2022, we will be celebrating a very special 22nd anniversary at our new home. It will be an all-white gala and we hope that you will join us!

With Warm Regards,

Gepsie M. Metellus
Executive Director
SANT LA IN ACTION
1199SEIU visits Sant La
1199SEIU Florida visited our new office this month, and gifted Sant La $26,873.32 to support our Solidarite Miami Project, an initiative supports Haitian refugees and their families by addressing their emergency needs and access to resources. Thanks to 1199SEIU’s support, Sant La will bring more stability to families with very young children experiencing homelessness, limited access to education and health care.
HLA supports Solidarite Miami
Sant La continues to support Haitian asylum seekers through its Solidarite Miami Project. Special thank you to attorneys Nadine Gedeon, and Deborah Saint Vil of the Haitian Lawyers Association who regularly meet with clients at Sant La to answer their legal questions! Solidarité Miami Konbit!
TruConnect connects clients with devices
Sant La's An'n Pale Tek/Let’s Talk Tech initiative partnered with TruConnect to provide clients with a very low-cost tablet and sim card to access free internet service and a phone line. Ann Pale Tek/Let’s Talk Tech is our culturally appropriate strategy to help bridge the technology gap impacting Miami’s Haitian community.
Sant La in the Community

Sant La's Mental Health and Strengthening Families team members, Jinia Williams and Natasha Saintilien, participated in several community events to share our programs and services. They are pictured below at the Lindsey Hopkins Technical College Resource Hour and the Health is Wealth Fair on April 23rd at Belafonte TACOLCY Center.
Sant La LIVE on Facebook
In April #SantLaLIVE explored a series of topics concerning our aging population -- elderly care options, preparing and coping with loss, estate planning and retirement. We hope this series allowed for our aging adults and their loved ones much needed information on often neglected matters. Special thanks to the Alliance for Aging, Children's Bereavement Center and Jadinah Gustave, Esq. Remember to join us LIVE, every Thursday at noon, in dialogue with community experts. You can also watch the replay on our Facebook watch page.

POLITICAL CORNER
Michael A. Finney will be missed
Sant La is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Michael Finney. His impact on Miami-Dade County through advocacy for inclusionary economic development initiatives was profound.

Sant La was proud to have such special talents embodied by someone we embraced as a kindred spirit to Black Miami. We will treasure his memory and work to honor his legacy as we mourn this great loss.

Our deepest condolence to his colleagues at the Beacon Council and to his family. May the loving memories shine bright and bring you solace.
