TOMORROW: 6TH ANNUAL SCHOOL CHOICE FAIR!
Come and learn about the variety of programs offered at SAUSD schools during the 6th Annual School Choice Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2020 at MainPlace Mall. More than 50 schools and departments from across the District will provide information on our award-winning campuses and our wide selection of programs, including STEM, early learning, dual language, Speech & Debate, and Visual and Performing Arts, in addition to our 35 career pathways, nationally ranked culinary program, and more.
SUPERINTENDENT ISSUES LETTERS REGARDING CORONAVIRUS
Superintendent Jerry Almendarez wrote two letters to the SAUSD community this week to address recent news reports about the new Coronavirus, which has caused an outbreak of a respiratory illness. The first reassures students and families that SAUSD has measures in place to monitor for this illness and protect our students. The second informs the community that there are no confirmed cases in the District, and that it remains safe to attend school and on-campus events. For details, visit www.sausd.us.
SAUSD LEADERS SUPPORT FAMILIES AT BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING
In support of SAUSD students and their families, District leaders this week attended an Orange County Board of Supervisors meeting where they spoke about the potential impacts of the planned Yale Transitional Center on student safety. Dozens of parents, students, community, and staff members, along with Board and Cabinet members were in attendance. For more photos, click here
SAUSD SPEECH AND DEBATE TOURNAMENT DRAWS 830 PARTICIPANTS
Twenty-seven schools and 830 students participated in the recent SAUSD Mardi Gras Classic Speech and Debate Tournament at Santa Ana High School. The two-time defending National Championship squad from the Advanced Learning Academy won the tournament with 244 points. The speaker of the tournament went to Abdiel Ramirez, who won three 1st place trophies. The District’s Speech and Debate program has grown to include hundreds of students in elementary, intermediate and high schools across the District; students have begun to break into the upper echelon of speech and debate nationwide. TWO SAUSD REPRESENTATIVES NAMED 'OC HISPANIC WOMEN OF THE YEAR' 
The League of United Latin American Citizens – Santa Ana LULAC Council #147 has named Dr. Mayra Helguera, Assistant Superintendent, Special Education/SELPA and Lisa Gonzales-Solomon, Madison Elementary School Principal, as Orange County Hispanic Women of the Year. They will be recognized along with other recipients during an awards banquet on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the Marriott Courtyard in Santa Ana. WE CARE ART CONTEST AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Created during the 2017-2018 school year, the SAUSD We Care Campaign has created materials and initiatives to ensure that students, staff, and families know that there is help when they need it the most and that SAUSD cares. This school year, the We Care Committee created the second, districtwide We Care Art Contest for students. Winners were announced this week in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for elementary, intermediate, and secondary school levels. Congratulations to all! To view the winning entries, click here

SADDLEBACK TAKES OUTRIGHT LEAGUE TITLE
Saddleback High School made headlines on OC Sports Zone this week when its girls basketball team captured the Orange Coast League title outright. The Roadrunners jumped to a 31-point halftime lead and went on to defeat Costa Mesa 62-33 to take the crown.
