On June 18, the Board of Supervisors proclaimed June as Immigrant Heritage Month to celebrate the undeniable impact immigrants have on the fabric of our country.
Westmont High School graduate Monica Herrera Luque joined us to share her story. She came to our county from Nicaragua her freshmen year of high school to be with her mother, from whom she had been separated since the age of 6.
Monica arrived at Westmont High School four years ago not knowing English but worked tirelessly to master the language in order to graduate on time with her class.
“Through her inspiring efforts, she has overcome multiple obstacles, found her passion, and is eager to continue her education in pursuit of her career goals," said CUHSD Superintendent Robert Bravo. "I could not be prouder.”
Monica will attend San Jose City College in the fall where she will study law enforcement. She received more than $6,000 in scholarships.
“I am proud to say that I am an immigrant as well as my family members,” Monica said at the June 18 meeting. “My purpose is to better our community and be an example for new generations.”
