QUESTION: What is the age of the United States?
Hello residents of District 4 and welcome to my monthly newsletter.

I hope you are all enjoying a nice summer that includes vacation time, family time or outdoor time in one of the many wonderful parks in our county.

Before we get started with what's coming up, let's talk about what we have accomplished in my first six months as your County Supervisor.

  •   I initiated a proposal for implementation of onsite childcare for County employees at one or more County facilities and an increased childcare subsidy for County employees. The next steps include a County-wide employee survey to determine need, conversations with bargaining units, establishment of a reserve fund and, most exciting, standing up the first programs during FY 2019-20!

  •  I ensured that our County will keep intact funding to our refugee service providers so that the actions of Washington D.C. will not impact our local communities.

  • I am leading an effort to add two new environmental stewardship goals to the County's existing goals. These goals would include the development of educational programs and volunteer services that promote stewardship and develop programming of ecologically compatible recreational use of our local streams and riparian corridors.

  • Along with Supervisor Cindy Chavez, I sponsored the County’s first Transgender Job Fair, elevating employment opportunities across County departments. My team is following up to ensure that candidates are able to move through the hiring process in a timely manner.

  • My colleagues and I approved the County's $8.1 billion FY 2019-2020 budget. This funding includes financial support to organizations supporting our youth, families and mothers, many of which provide valuable services and resources to all our D4 residents.

I want to encourage every resident to participate in the 2020 Census. An accurate Census count is vital to ensure county residents receive their fair share of federal funding and representation. The County receives approximately $500 million in federal funds, based on Census data, annually. The funds pay for essential services such as education and health care. Please note that there will be no question on the Census regarding citizenship.

I had so much fun at the Rose, White and Blue Parade in San Jose's Rose Garden neighborhood on Fourth of July! It fills me with joy to see our community come out to celebrate together.

And in case you missed it, watch our third virtual #Food4Thought here.

This month and next, you can catch me at local D4 libraries this summer reading during family story times. You can see dates here .

Lastly, you may see the D4 team out in the community visiting D4 food establishments. We all have to eat and what's better than supporting our local eateries while taking a lunch break? I welcome you to share your #D4Eats recommendations on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

As always, if you have questions, comments, and/or concerns, email me to [email protected]

IN THE NEWS
You can keep track of D4-specific coverage and County news by visiting my newsroom on my website.
On June 18, the Board of Supervisors proclaimed June as Immigrant Heritage Month to celebrate the undeniable impact immigrants have on the fabric of our country.

Westmont High School graduate Monica Herrera Luque joined us to share her story. She came to our county from Nicaragua her freshmen year of high school to be with her mother, from whom she had been separated since the age of 6.

Monica arrived at Westmont High School four years ago not knowing English but worked tirelessly to master the language in order to graduate on time with her class.

“Through her inspiring efforts, she has overcome multiple obstacles, found her passion, and is eager to continue her education in pursuit of her career goals," said CUHSD Superintendent Robert Bravo. "I could not be prouder.”

Monica will attend San Jose City College in the fall where she will study law enforcement. She received more than $6,000 in scholarships.

“I am proud to say that I am an immigrant as well as my family members,” Monica said at the June 18 meeting. “My purpose is to better our community and be an example for new generations.”
