Environmental Day at the State Capital
LDA members joined over forty environmental groups and hundreds of attendees from across the state, at Wednesday's Environmental Day at the Capital.
The day began with a welcoming ceremony lead by event organizer Sandy Bahr of the Grand Canyon Chapter of Sierra Club followed by messages of support by numerous speakers including Representative Oscar De Los Santos, Minority Leader of AZ House, who spoke of Climate, Heat, Water and the Arizona Legislature, Ojas Sanghi, AZ Youth Climate Coalition who spoke of the importance of climate action, and Adrian Herder and Andrew Atencia, of To’ Nizho’ni’ A’ni (Sacred Water Speaks), who spoke collectively of protecting Navajo water and watershed.
The event focused on five priorities:
- Act on Climate Crisis-Now!
- Protect Precious Water Resources
- Address Environmental Injustice and Racism
- Restore and Protect Land, Habitat and Wildlife
- Ensure Access to Democracy for All
Throughout the day, groups attended meetings with elected officials to discuss theses priorities, asking for their support of upcoming bills that embrace them and rejection of bills that oppose them.
This event was inspiring, providing an avenue participants to express concerns, network among like-minded attendees, and learn about the ongoing efforts of passionate groups, and individuals who are working diligently to protect our air, water, land, flora, and fauna in order to create a viable and healthy environment for this and future generations.
Looking forward to next year’s Environmental Day at the Capital!
