Student Spotlight

Congrats on your graduation, Kyla!

Kyla began her journey at Sargent Center when she was just 5 years old. Now, 17 years later, she will be graduating with a legacy of joy, determination, and accomplishments that have inspired so many people along the way.

One highlight of Kyla’s progress was completing job trials at Teamworks, where she was responsible for sanitizing the field perimeter and the arcade games. She also had the opportunity to go to Stop and Shop, where she enjoyed walking around shopping for her favorite snacks and drinks, and made tremendous progress by completing a transaction. Kyla excelled at vocational tasks, always taking pride in activities like cleaning doorknobs around school and was an expert at matching canned goods and stocking them in her classroom pantry.

Kyla has a passion for sports and physical activities – walking on the treadmill, playing basketball, and taking walks around campus. During the summer, she loved participating in a variety of water activities. She could often be found in pools, the splash pad, and always enjoyed going sailing with her classmates.

As Kyla prepares for the next chapter in her life, we are all so proud of what she has accomplished, and we know she will succeed in everything she does. We wish her all the best in her future adventures and thank Kyla for sharing her bright spirit with us. Congratulations Kyla!

Drums Alive: A Dynamic Fitness and Wellness Program

We have introduced a program called Drums Alive which is already having a big impact on our Physical Education classes!

Led by our physical educator who is a certified Drums Alive instructor, this unique and engaging wellness program combines drumming, movement, music, and rhythm to benefit students' physical, cognitive, social, and emotional health.

These classes offer students an opportunity to move to the beat while improving coordination, focus, and self-expression.

Designed for all abilities, ensuring every student can participate, Drums Alive has evidence-based and research-backed benefits supporting:

  • Brain Health and Cognitive Ability
  • Decreases in Stress, Depression, and Anxiety
  • Athletic Ability and Reaction Times
  • Motor Skills, Behavior, and Social Emotional Health

A group of students recently had their first experience with Drums Alive, learning introductory moves and beats, as well as free drumming where they created their very own movement and drumming patterns.

Drums Alive is a dynamic new addition to our Physical Education curriculum. We look forward to seeing this exciting program grow as we continue to offer our students opportunities for physical activity and development.
