News: Admiral Blair steps down as Chairman of Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA

After five years of leadership roles at Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, Admiral
Dennis Blair
has retired from his position as Chairman of the Board, effective October 1. During his tenure, Sasakawa USA focused its mission and expanded its staff to provide timely research, outreach, and analysis on key policy issues facing the United States and Japan.
Admiral Blair will continue to support Sasakawa USA’s mission as a Distinguished Senior Fellow (Non-Resident) and will lead the Trilateral Cybersecurity Commission and a Tabletop Exercise (TTX) for the organization this winter. Admiral Blair’s distinguished career includes serving as Director of National Intelligence under President Barack Obama and serving 34 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command. This fall, he joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as the first Knott Distinguished Visiting Professor of the Practice.

Upcoming Event: Dr. Ezra Vogel will speak on "Understanding China-Japan Relations 1945-2019"

rofessor Ezra F. Vogel will speak on Sino-Japanese relations from World War II to the present at “
Understanding China-Japan Relations 1945-2019”
on October 10, 2019. Dr. Vogel, Ford II Professor of the Social Sciences Emeritus, Harvard University, is the author of
China and Japan: Facing History
(Harvard University Press, 2019).
Sasakawa USA is co-sponsoring the talk with Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, which will host the event. Dr.
Satohiro Akimoto,
Chairman of the Board and President, Sasakawa USA, will introduce Dr. Vogel. James L. Schoff, Senior Fellow, Carnegie Asia Program, will open the event.

On September 17-18, 2019, in the wake of Governor Tim Walz’s trade trip to Japan, Sasakawa USA organized its fifth installment of
The Alliance Working in America (TAWA) p
rogram in the Twin Cities. Sasakawa USA took a group of D.C.-based policy experts as speakers to engage the local community on U.S.-Japan issues through a series of public and private programs, co-sponsored by Global Minnesota and the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA), and in partnership with other local institutions.

Dani Charles, CEO and co-founder of Charles Bernard Ventures, and a fellow in New America’s Cybersecurity Initiative, participated in the
Sasakawa USA 2018-2019 In-Depth Alumni Research Trip
to Japan. In a new paper published on Sasakawa USA's website, Charles outlines the relationship between Japan and Israel, particularly in how it relates to cyber, innovation, and technology, and recommends avenues in which the United States can extend its role as a supporter in the relationship.

Upcoming JUMP Event: "The U.S.-Japan Alliance and Security in in the Indo-Pacific Region"
|
|
On October 30, 2019, the
Japan-U.S. Military Program (JUMP)
will host a seminar, “The U.S.-Japan Alliance and Contemporary Defense Contingencies in the Indo-Pacific,” in cooperation with the Japan America Society of Washington, D.C. The event will be held in Roosevelt Hall of the National War College on Fort McNair.
Distinguished specialists on Japan, China, the Korean Peninsula, Southeast Asia, and the U.S.-Japan Alliance will discuss U.S.-Japan defense contingencies that impact U.S. forward deployed forces and regional relationships. A reception will follow.
