Indigenous Population Census Data
The 2021 census showed that Indigenous people accounted for five per cent of the total population of Canada, and 17 per cent of the total population in Saskatchewan. Other insights include that from 2016 to 2021, the number of Indigenous people who reported that they could speak an Indigenous language conversationally declined by 4.3 per cent. The change reflects declines in the number of Indigenous people with an Indigenous mother tongue; however, there is a growing share of Indigenous people who are learning an Indigenous language as a second language.
