Letter from the President

Happy New Year! It finally occurred to me over the holiday break that we are not only entering a new year, but a new decade.
I am looking forward to the upcoming year and the exciting work that SLA will continue to undertake to best meet our members' needs. We have established a committee to recruit new Board members for the 2020-2021 year. I encourage you to consider joining the Board and helping to continue building a strong, member-driven SLA.

It is already the New Year, and we are getting close to the start of One Book, One Province, Saskatchewan month.

Recently, Candace Savage, our OBOP author penned an article for Freelance, the magazine of the Saskatchewan Writers' Guild. The article is attached here, and can be distributed to any libraries or museums that you wish. For libraries hosting small events or book clubs, the article might form points for discussion. A fillable poster can be found here for anyone wishing to participate.

One of our project partners, the Museums Association of Saskatchewan (Em Ironstar) have generously offered to film a reading by Candace Savage. The reading will be illustrated by photos from Saskatchewan History and Folklore featuring the works of Everett Baker and Adrian Paton, and will occur at the Legislative Library at the end of January. The film will then be distributed to libraries and museums province wide in order to encourage discussions. Thank you to everyone who is making this happen. For anyone who is interested, Saskatchewan History and Folklore offers a wealth of photographic history of Saskatchewan, and it is well worth a visit to their website.

With nine library events happening around the province, SLA is pleased to support an event at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum on March 12th from 7-8:30 p.m. in the theatre and lobby of the museum. Co-sponsored by Regina Public Library and the Museum, the event will feature a reading by Candace Savage as well as a talk by Jean Francis Oakes from the Nekaneet reserve. There will also be a display of photos by Adrian Patton.

Lastly, the month of March will officially be proclaimed One Book, One Province, Saskatchewan month!

Be sure to visit the OBOP webpage as events and information have been updayed.

Thank you again to all of our partners and sponsors, and everyone who has contributed to the project so far.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets

The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community.  Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download  in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
