Hello everyone,
Summer is finally here and July signifies a changeover of sorts. There is the end of primary and secondary school (I can't believe my daughter has finished grade one!). Many library workers start planning their summer vacation(s) or have already started theirs. My family is planning a trip to Calgary and Cypress Hills Provincial Park in mid-July. I've heard many good things about the latter and I'm excited to stay in one of their cabins. In early August we will visit Winnipeg for the first time. I would also like to do more tent camping in Southern Saskatchewan.

Lou Duggan Passes Away
From Sue Cleyle, Chair of the Partnership:
"It is with a heavy heart that I pass along the news that Lou Duggan, former Partnership Communications Committee Chair and Secretary passed away earlier today.
Lou was very active locally, regionally and nationally in a variety of capacities in addition to his Partnership work including APLA President, Dalhousie School of Information Management Associated Alumni Association President and a member of many library association committees. Lou was awarded the Dalhousie School of Information Management Associated Alumni
(SIMAA) Outstanding Alumni Award and the APLA Merit Award as recognition of his many contributions. Lou was a colleague, mentor and friend to many of us and he will be deeply missed.
A celebration of Lou's life is being organised for the library community probably at the Halifax public library downtown branch."

Mark your calendars for the SLA Summer Social at the Fireside Bistro in Regina, July 19 from 5 to 7 p.m.The Bistro is located on the corner of 15th and Smith Streets.
Grants available for SLA members
- The Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) is pleased to offer a new $1,500 Anniversary Conference Grant.
- SLA also offers Continuing Education grants to provide and support relevant educational opportunities for its members.
- Deadline for receipt of Culture Days grant applications is July 14, 2017.Culture Days grants of $300 reflect the generous additional support of SaskCulture for this year only. More information can be found here.
- Saskatchewan Library Week grant applications are now open. The deadline is August 15, 2017. More information can be found here.

The Canadian Federation of Library Associations-Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques (CFLA-FCAB) Truth and Reconciliation Report and Recommendations
are now available. SLA members at the association's Annual General Meeting on May 4, 2017 voted to endorse the 10 recommendations presented in the CFLA-FCAB Truth and Reconciliation Report and Recommendations. The endorsement is here.
The Multitype Library Board June 2017 communiqué is now available on the Board website. The communiqué includes a brief summary of the MDLP AGM, a new truth and reconciliation resource and Saskatchewan library news.

Professional career and activities
: I grew up in Moose Jaw and did my BA in History at Campion College at the UofR. After my undergrad I took a year to work and then completed my MLIS at Western in 2004. I was hired in 2005 at Southeast Regional Library in Weyburn as the Branch Supervisor. Over the years I have been involved in many aspects of Regional Library work such as collections, staff training, policy development and community needs assessments to name a few. I have also served on various committees around the province with SILS, the MDLP and others.
In my spare time
: I'm the proud and blessed dad of four kids ages 7, 5, 2 and 9 months so there's not a lot of spare time at my house. On the odd occasion I'm not parenting I enjoy long distance running, reading, and collapsing in front of Netflix.
Favorite books
: Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat, Landscape Turned Red: The Battle of Antietam by Stephen W. Sears and Nero's Killing Machine: The True Story of Rome's Remarkable 14th Legion by Stephen Dando-Collins. I can recite The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch from memory, so it better make this list too.
I'm currently reading:
: Mean Dads for a Better America: The Generous Rewards of an Old-Fashioned Childhood by Tom Shillue and The Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Long-term career goals
: As a public librarian the last provincial budget has caused some serious re-calibrating of my long term career goals. However, given the chance, I would like to continue developing our rural branch network so it can provide modern library services and resources regardless of our economic or geographic challenges.
Elaina St. Onge has returned from family leave and is back as Library Coordinator at Campion College. Interim Library Coordinator, Jennifer Hall, has returned to the University of Regina Library as a User Services Assistant.

Summer programming is a cornerstone of public library programming across Saskatchewan, designed as a universal support for children to sustain learning during the school break.
90% of public libraries participate yearly in this summer strategy to support learning, offering 2500 activities over the 8 week period to more than 45,000 children.

21, 943 children registered in the TD Summer Reading Club in 2016 - receiving materials designed to support families in developing self-directed reading habits. The program reaches almost a quarter of the 6-8 year olds in the province.

A highlight of Summer 2017 in many of Saskatchewan's public libraries will be over 70 STEAM/Maker kits, purchased with support from the Provincial Library & Literacy Office, developed as a strategy to expand digital literacy programming capacity in rural branches.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
