Greetings!
With profound sadness, the Saskatchewan Library Association acknowledges the recent finding of unmarked grave sites of children attending residential schools in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. There are no words to adequately express the mourning that we feel when we hear these announcements and reflect on the experiences of Indigenous people in Canada.
Thank You to all involved in the planning of the 2021 joint MLA-SLA conference. I was fortunate enough to serve on the Executive Planning Committee and took part in many thought-provoking and interesting discussions. I saw first-hand the hard work and dedication of this group and of the larger planning committee. I know that the virtual does not replace all the benefits of the in-person conference, but it also allowed us to undertake some different options. The fact that we could more easily partner with Manitoba and have a richer conference for it was amazing. I hope that this format enabled greater and wider attendance in areas of our provinces that don’t often get to attend the conference.
|
I would also like to thank all of you who attended, presented and participated in the conference. I was able to attend a number of sessions and they were all excellent. I learned so much and look forward to going back to those sessions, and to check out other sessions that I was unable to attend at the time. We are already starting to plan for next year’s conference.

Libraries: Better Together Conference 2021
|
|
The 2021 Conference jointly hosted by MLA and SLA was held June 14-16. This was our first virtual conference and a great learning experience for all involved. There were 420 registrations; our ability to offer an economical group rate along with the convenience of a virtual platform were factors in the attendance.
The program was a thoughtful mix of sessions with key note speaker, the Honourable Murray Sinclair, featured speaker, Chris Kutarna, and Nora Young as a closing key note speaker. There were 34 sessions which were well attended. The presenters are critical to a high-quality professional development experience and we were fortunate to have excellent sessions. A social committee introduced creative activities including a pet show, trivia, and yoga.
An evaluation form has been developed and distributed to conference delegates. We would love to hear your feedback and suggestions to help in planning conference 2022!

Saskatchewan Library Association Program News
TD Summer Reading Club and Performer Tours
The TD Summer Reading Club is well underway. Thank you to participating libraries and especially to Library and Archives Canada, the Toronto Dominion Bank, and Toronto Public Library for this program.
Under normal circumstances SaskTel would be providing some funding for the Children’s Storytelling and Performer Tour which occurs every summer in concert with the Reading Club. Due to COVID restrictions and uncertainty, SaskTel has agreed to fund four performer videos. The performers are Danny Kazam (magician), Pat Roth (balloon creations), Danica Lorer (storyteller), and Simon Moccasin (indigenous storyteller).
The videos will be made available to all the library regions in the hope that they will be circulated to all the branches. The videos will remain on the SLA website indefinitely and can be accessed anytime.
We hope that you enjoy them and find them useful.

Name Amber Daigneault
Title Aboriginal Library Services Coordinator, Provincial Library and Literacy Office, a branch of the Ministry of Education – until mid-July.
Born and Lived Born in Meadow Lake, registered with Peepeekisis First Nation, grew up in the Metis community of Ile-a-la-Crosse, moved to Fort Qu’Appelle, works in Regina. I had lived briefly in Yorkton, Canoe Lake, Edmonton, and on a couple of reserves. Also spent some time hitchhiking across northern Saskatchewan.
Early Life When I was younger, I really overlooked the fact that life in northern Saskatchewan was the sort of calm that most city people actually strive for. The trees soften the sounds of nearby traffic, the waterways have their own trails, and if you time it right, you can pick the berries and mushrooms for tomorrow’s breakfast. Instead of enjoying the beauty of the north, I hid in library books and complained that my life wasn’t idyllic like the ones on the pages I’d read. When my mom and aunties and kokum would take me out to forage and prep fish or wild meat, I’d tell them stories of kids in books that never had to do any of that.

We are living in the information age. In some ways, it is easier than ever to access good quality information quickly and efficiently. But at the same time, we still seem to be plagued by phenomena of misinformation and conspiracy theories. So, what's going on? Our relationship to information seems to run deeper than just access.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
