This autumn, we will celebrate Library Week / Culture Days once again and SLA has grants available for both events (see Program News for more information). Last year, Saskatchewan libraries were very innovative with their SLA grant money and several used it for exciting programming in conjunction with the 2020 Video Project produced by SLA. Our Saskatchewan Library Story this month features one of the very successful programs from Library Week 2020. We hope it will inspire others in creative library programming for 2021!

Library Name and Location: Meadow Lake Library, Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan

Description of the program: Take-home packages of the supplies needed to participate in the projects included in the SLA Library Week & Culture Days 2020 videos.

Did you provide supplies for participants? The take-home kits included everything needed to undertake the projects. Each kit was designed for one (or more) of the videos.

How did you get word out about the programming? Social media (Facebook and Instagram) and word of mouth, as we didn’t have foot traffic at the time.

Was the programming offered in the library branch or was it all virtual? This program was delivered through a combination of take-home bags and online video instruction.

2021 Video Project and Programming Grants

Saskatchewan Library Week is October 17 – 23, 2021. Exciting things are in the works for Saskatchewan Library Week 2021! SLA is developing Saskatchewan Library Week (SLW) posters which will illustrate this year’s theme “Rising Above”. The posters will be printed in both English and Cree and will be distributed throughout the province.

Culture Days is September 24 – October 24, 2021. Due to the uncertainty of Covid-19 restrictions, the Saskatchewan Library Association is once again creating several 45-minute videos intended to create a spark of interest in a new skill or different author, or to engage with a new idea. The videos may be used for library programming or enjoyed by the general public to celebrate both Saskatchewan Library Week and Culture Days. Five artists and writers have been confirmed and the videos will be available on the SLA website and will be promoted on SLA social media.

Programming Grants Available

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets

The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
The Saskatchewan Library Association gratefully acknowledges the support of our funding agencies.
