Letter from Dorothea Warren

Hello,

As you are aware, I have retired from the role of Executive Director at the Saskatchewan Library Association. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in this role and the opportunity to meet and work with the many dedicated members of the library community, partner organizations, and supporters. It has been a privilege to support the association through a period of growth and development. SLA is well positioned with strong staff and board leadership to sustain our current operation as well as look forward to future directions.

This is not a "goodbye" as I will continue to be involved in specific files in a supportive capacity over the next while. My best wishes always to the association and the library community.

Sincerely,

Dorothea Warren

Two $5,000 SLA Bursaries Open to MLIS Students

Are you taking a graduate degree program in library and information science? Do you know someone who is?

SLA gives out two $5,000 bursaries to MLIS students each year: the Maureen Woods Education Bursary and the Indigenous Student MLIS Education Bursary!

The two awards are open to students enrolled in or accepted to an ALA-accredited graduate degree program in library and information science or equivalent at the time of the award. Students can be attending any accredited institution in Canada, but preference will be given to Saskatchewan residents.

These awards were established to promote the continued growth of professional librarianship in Saskatchewan.

The application deadline is October 31, 2022. For more information on eligibility and to apply, visit SLA's website.

Summer Performer Tours a Success!

All across Saskatchewan this summer, libraries who received an SLA Summer Performer Tour grant put on awesome performance and program opportunities for their communities.

At the Norquay Public Library, two performers from Yorkton's Free My Muse Theatre Company brought an interactive afternoon of music, singing, dancing, and acting to children in the community. A total of 15 kids participated and had the opportunity to grow their own acting skills.

SLA wants say a big "thank you" to SaskTel for sponsoring this year's Summer Performer Tour grants. These incredible community programs would not have been possible without SaskTel's support!

Yorkton Public Library Increasing Accessibility for People with Dementia

The Yorkton Public Library is a participating organization of Dementia Supports in Rural Saskatchewan, a five-year project that focuses on enhancing the social inclusion of older adults living with dementia and their care partners.

As part of this, Yorkton Public Library has taken meaningful steps towards becoming dementia friendly by making small changes to the library’s space to enhance its accessibility for people living with dementia.

These steps include:

  • Providing books and keyboards with large print
  • Having a quiet reading area with accessible chairs
  • Having dementia resources available
  • Training staff about dementia

Happy September!

This is always a time of renewal and refresh for me. We find this at the SLA too. We just had our Board orientation at the end of August and have discussed and planned the work for the upcoming year. Goals have been drafted for the committees and we are already planning for the upcoming strategic planning session.

Tina Kleisinger joined the SLA as the new Executive Director and we have already taken a road trip to Saskatoon to look at locations for the 2023 Saskatchewan Libraries Conference. Please let us know if you are interested in joining the conference planning committee.

Work is well underway for Saskatchewan Library Week, Culture Days and One Book, One Province. Keep an eye out for more information about all of these! We would also love to hear about what you and your library are planning for these programs.

Please reach out if you are interested in volunteering on any committee or the Board. We would also love to hear your great ideas and your questions.

Motivational Speaker Coming to Regina Public Library

Regina Public Library is hosting an event featuring motivational speaker Chris Koch on Thursday, September 8 at 6:00pm.

Koch was raised in the small farming and ranching community of Nanton, Alberta. Despite being born without arms and legs, he grew up like any other small-town kid—playing road hockey, causing mischief at school, and helping out on his family farm. Today, Koch is a motivational speaker who inspires his audiences to continually challenge themselves and build their dream lives.

The in-person event will take place at RPL's Central Library (2311-12th Avenue, Regina). Anyone who cannot make it in person is welcome to watch a livestream online.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets

The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.

The Saskatchewan Library Association gratefully acknowledges the support

of our funding agencies.
