Letter from the President
Greetings! Earlier this year, the Board decided, after looking at other library associations across Canada, to stop publishing SLAte in July and August. Since we are in very unusual circumstances this year, we feel that we should at least publish the July newsletter so we can keep the lines of communication open.
So, I am happy to be bringing you a brief update this month. I would like

to thank the SLA staff, Board and our volunteers Michael Shires and Brad Doerksen, for all the hard work that went into planning and running the SLA AGM on June 25. This was our first virtual AGM and I believe it went very smoothly. I hope that we will be able to continue with in-person AGMs, but open it up with a virtual component so that we can reach as many members as possible. I feel like the AGM was a success and I am looking forward to the exciting year to come.

Welcome to New Board Members
Elaina St. Onge, Member at Large
I grew up in Regina and completed an undergraduate degree inEnglish at Luther College at the U of R. After convocation, I relocated to Montreal to obtain a Master's degree in Library and Information Studies at McGill University, where I undertook an independent research project exploring the attitudes of anxious library students toward chat reference services. I also completed an MA in English at Concordia University in Montreal with a specialization in Victorian literature. After finishing my studies, I returned to Regina to work for the federal government and then Luther College Library before taking on my current role as Librarian at Campion College in 2014.

After earning a Master's degree in English from the U of S in 2000, Luke went on to work across the university in a number of leadership positions, including as a lecturer in English and business communications; a fundraiser; and engagement specialist. He has worked in the University Library as a Development Officer and, most recently, as the Director of External Engagement, a position focused on building external partnerships in support of the library's strategic goals.
Thank you to Outgoing Board Members
Thank you to
Christina Winter, Linda Winkler and Lukas Miller for your participation in the SLA Board of Directors. Your work has contributed greatly to advancing the objectives of the organization. We wish you success in your future endeavors.
Thank you to Outgoing Committee Members
Committee work is significant in accomplishing the objectives of SLA. It is an excellent way to engage in matters that are important to the library community, and provides members with an opportunity to make new contacts and have new experiences.
Many thanks to the work of committee members during 2019-20! Your time, expertise and commitment are critical to supporting the mandate of SLA and the Saskatchewan library community. It was an active year and your contributions are much appreciated.
Saskatchewan Libraries and COVID-19
As you may be aware, libraries are included in Phase 4.2 of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan, which began on June 29. We understand that it may take a while until libraries are fully prepared to reopen with the proper safety measures. SLA is monitoring the situation and will continue to provide information as it becomes available.
Meanwhile, libraries have been slowly returning to business with curbside pickup and contactless material returns. We have compiled a list of libraries that are currently providing pickups and returns in Saskatchewan (as of June 25, 2020).
COMMUNIQUÉ on Anti-Black Racism
The Canadian Federation of Library Associations - Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques (CFLA-FCAB) condemns racism, white supremacy, and all systems of oppression which continue to deny citizens equitable treatment and justice in contemporary society. Recent events in the United States and in Canada have clearly demonstrated that racialized members of society are more at risk of mistreatment by the law enforcement system. CFLA-FCAB recognizes the particular emotional burden on Black colleagues and community members at this time.
COMMUNIQUÉ on Accessible Format for the MMIW Report
The Canadian Federation of Library Associations - Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques (CFLA-FCAB) is pleased to announce the accessible format of
Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, including the Calls for Justice.

As we begin planning for busy fall programs, the size and shape of our programs must be adaptable to inside and outside activities, as well as the virtual world. In addressing these possibilities, SLA is providing video tools for your use, and grants that will help you make creative programs for your patrons.
Call for Artists
SLA will be producing short videos of approximately 45 minutes for distribution in Saskatchewan libraries during Culture Days and Saskatchewan Library Week. These videos are of an instructional nature and can include any art form, as long as the skill can be learned in the 45 minute time frame. We are currently looking for artists and authors to feature in the videos.
Culture Days 2020: September 25 to October 25
Despite the uncertainty created by the current COVID-19 pandemic, SLA is still offering grants to member libraries, but at the moment we are unsure of when libraries will reopen, and whether gatherings will be possible. In light of this situation, SLA will be offering a number of one-hour videos created to spark interest in a new skill, a different author, or to engage with a new idea. Videos can be posted to your website or, should libraries open, can be broadcast within the library.
Need help funding your Culture Days program? SLA is offering ten $200 grants to member libraries to help celebrate Culture Days. Applications will be adjudicated by members of the SLA Program Committee and all decisions will be final.
The grant application form is available
here.
Saskatchewan Library Week: October 18 to 24, 2020
Libraries: Resilient in Changing Times
Saskatchewan Library Week (SLW) is a province-wide, annual event, which promotes the wonderful resources and services that libraries have to offer. Saskatchewan Library Week is celebrated throughout Saskatchewan in all types of libraries, in both urban and rural communities and by all age groups. The theme of Saskatchewan Library Week in 2020 is
Libraries: Resilient in Changing Times.
In the same way as Culture Days, SLA is offering one-hour videos for SLW. We are also offering twenty-five $250 grants to member libraries to help celebrate SLW.
The grant application form is available
here.
TD Summer Reading Club

Covid-19 has required flexibility and resilience by everyone and most organizations. Trying to maintain some level of "business as usual" has resulted in new approaches. The Willows usually have voting completed in March but this year, it was extended to June 1. The gala was also cancelled, with the winners announced in videos on June 15. You can access these here.
If you want to start preparing for the 2020 Willow program, you can find the finalists for the nominations here. You can't go wrong if you add any or all of these books to your collection.
Recently Saskatchewan School Library Association (SSLA) has appointed a representative to the Willow Board of Directors .

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
