Greetings!
I have been enjoying the longer days and hope that you have been able to enjoy the “nicer” weather. It has been a busy year at SLA despite, or maybe because of, COVID. We are just finishing preparations for the AGM, which is on May 6, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Please mark your calendars and register .This marks the time when this year’s committees are winding down their work. It doesn’t mean that the work stops, but formal committee structure winds down for the summer. Please keep an eye out later this year for an invite to join or rejoin committees of interest.
|
Like every year at this time, we are focused on the conference. This year, we are pleased to be working with the Manitoba Library Association to produce what is shaping up to be an amazing joint online conference. We look forward to “seeing” you there.

Katie McKay-Argyriou
Name: Katie McKay-Argyriou
Title: Program Manager, Wheatland Regional Library
Born and lived: I was born in Calgary but spent my early childhood in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon before moving to Manitoba. My dad was an RCMP officer for 32 years, so that explains the reason for the many, many places I have lived.

I attended university at Brandon University in Manitoba where I met my husband, Alex. We moved our family to Saskatchewan in 2011 and have lived in Moose Jaw, Martensville and Saskatoon.
Early Life: Living in Canada’s far north as a child was an adventure full of wilderness and wide- open spaces. My favourite town we lived in as a child was Dawson City, Yukon. Every summer the town would host Klondike Days and I remember it felt like living inside a museum with everyone in period costume and special events happening throughout the town. My life as a daughter of an RCMP officer who loved to move to new places meant that I grew up meeting lots of new people from all walks of life, cultures and backgrounds. As a child I didn’t love the frequent moves but I now appreciate how much l learned from all those experiences and places.

Mary Donaldson Bursary Recipient 2021
Congratulations to the 2021 recipient of the Saskatchewan Library Association Mary Donaldson Bursary, Erica Hartman! Erica is a first year Library and Information Technology student at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, and is thrilled to have been chosen for the Mary Donaldson Award of Merit.
|
- Erica believes in community service and giving back to the people who gave them so much. In the future, Erica hopes to contribute much to the library field. An avid reader from a young age, they spent most of their time either in the Carlyle King Library in Saskatoon or their elementary school library where they volunteered with helping to check in materials. They have participated in many community organizations as a volunteer, with a particular focus on youth. They acted for many years with the FLoYD Youth Theatre Festival before serving on the Executive Board as Secretary and Vice President for three years, and loved giving everyone a chance to create, connect, and build as a community. Their aspirations are to one day work in outreach and programming at the new Central Library in Saskatoon, continuing to provide their gifts of enthusiasm, dedication and creativity. Congratulations Erica!

Many thanks to Helen, Chau and our previous presenters Danielle Bitz, University of Saskatchewan, Kaetlyn Phillips, University of Regina and Abby Wolfe, Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan.
The successful four-part series saw attendees from all over Saskatchewan as well as from Alberta and Manitoba. It was a great way to connect in this unprecedented year without in-person events. SLA thanks all those who attended, all the amazing presenters and all of our committee members who planned the presentations.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
