Letter from the President

Holiday Greetings! It has been a busy and exciting year at SLA. We have been hard at work with a new Board of Directors (with only two returning to us in June). It has been a year of great learning.

The Executive Committee and Office
Staff have been drafting this year's request for funding to SaskCulture.

This is a huge undertaking and Dorothea, Anne and Marina have been working hard to ensure that our submission is representative of everything the organization and volunteers do for Saskatchewan libraries.

The Board has received a report from the Communication planning session that we undertook at the October Board meeting. We will create a formal Communication Plan in the next few months.

Holiday Hours

The SLA Office will be closed from December 23, 2019 to January 1, 2020. We will return to our regular hours (Tuesday to Thursday, 9AM to 4PM) on January 2, 2020.

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce that its third application cycle for library subscription funding has begun. As part of LAC's agreement with OCLC (signed in March 2017), LAC will cover the interlibrary loan and/or copy cataloguing subscription fees for small public libraries and small libraries at postsecondary institutions (community colleges, CEGEPs and universities) that meet the eligibility criteria.

Please note that all small libraries that received funding during the first or second funded periods (February 2018-March 2019 or April 2019-March 2020) will automatically receive funding for the April 2020-March 2021 period. If you are already receiving funding, you are asked not to re-apply.

I Read Canadian Day

The inaugural I READ CANADIAN DAY is a national day of celebration of Canadian books for young people. This is a day dedicated to 'reading Canadian' and will empower families, schools, libraries and organizations to host local activities and events within the week.
For example, libraries or book stores can create a local I Read Canadian display for a month, or host author and illustrator visits during the week of the I Read Canadian day. Schools or communities can create challenges to get more readers involved - see how many readers can read Canadian.

Taking stock: CFLA-FCAB at four years

The Canadian Federation of Library Associations-Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques (CFLA-FCAB) is now entering its fourth year as an entity and so it is time to take stock of where it is as an organization and what the future holds.

MALAGINTO opens at Dunlop Art Gallery
In Filipino folklore, Asuang are supernatural shape-shifters who can sever and reattach their  own body parts. They are vampires, ghouls, witches, viscera suckers, and werewolves who  terrify villages at nighttime.
In Marigold Santos's MALAGINTO, a new exhibition opening at Dunlop Art Gallery, Asuang are  the chief subject. The artist moved to Canada from the Philippines as a child. In this work, she  explores the challenges of arriving in a new culture and finding herself suddenly different from  those around her.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets

The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community.  Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download  in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
