NATIONAL UMBRELLA DAY
National Umbrella Day casts a little shade on February 10th. The day honors one of the world's most useful inventions, the umbrella!
Not only does the umbrella help keep us dry from the rain, but it also protects us from the heat of the sun. You can also use an umbrella as a fashion accessory. While the umbrella is primarily practical, they also decorate cocktails. These brightly colored paper umbrellas make fun party favors, especially when visiting sunny locations.
Umbrellas have also found their way into the art world. Their color and shape make sharp silhouettes. They also serve as the canvas for art. In movies, umbrellas play a role, too. For example, they played vital parts in Singing in the Rain in 1952 and Mary Poppins in 1964.
Interesting Umbrella TidBits:
The word umbrella comes from the Latin word umbra, meaning shade or shadow. Brolly is a slang word for umbrella, often used in Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Bumbershoot is a fanciful Americanism for an umbrella from the late 19th century.
The basic umbrella was invented over four thousand years ago. There is evidence of umbrellas in the ancient art and artifacts of Egypt, Assyria, Greece, and China.
We can credit the Chinese for being the first to protect us from the rain. Their paper parasols received a layer of wax followed by lacquer that made the umbrella withstand the elements.
One of the first umbrella shops opened in 1830 at 53 New Oxford Street in London, England. The shop, operated by James Smith and Sons, still operates regular hours at the same location today.
In 1928, Hans Haupt's pocket umbrellas appeared. Then, in 1969, Bradford E. Phillips, the owner of Totes Incorporated of Loveland, Ohio, obtained a patent for the first "working folding umbrella."
Umbrellas have also been fashioned into hats as early as 1880 and as recently as 1987.
Photographers use umbrellas with a reflective inside as a diffusion device when employing artificial lighting and as a glare shield and shade, most often in portrait situations.

reimagined Captain’s Float- now renamed the Founders Float in Ed Muniz’ honor. A statue was placed where he always stood on the float. By doing this, he will always be looking out into the crowd with his classic wave, hand in hand with our mascot, the Golden Boy, forever cherishing everyone who celebrated his dream of creating a “small” parade for the Gentilly neighborhood. | | |

What does "quintessential" mean?
Perfect example
quintessential \pronunciation: kwin-tuh-sen-shuhl\
Definition: representing the perfect example of a particular type or quality
Origin: The word "quintessential" comes from the medieval Latin word "quinta essentia" which means "fifth essence". This term was used in medieval alchemy to refer to a hypothetical substance that was believed to be the essence of all matter.
Example: The book "To Kill a Mockingbird" is often considered the quintessential American novel.
Representing the perfect example is the essence of what "quintessential" means. It is the epitome of something, the most perfect embodiment of its type or quality. To call something "quintessential" is to say that it is the ultimate example of its kind, the one that defines and represents everything that is great about that thing. It is the highest standard of excellence, the benchmark against which all other things of its kind are measured. From the quintessential sports car to the quintessential beach vacation, this word is used to describe the best of the best.

What does "querulous" mean?
Complaining
querulous \kwěr-yə-ləs\
Definition: inclined to complain or find fault; expressing or characterized by complaints
Origin: Middle English, from Old French querelos, from Latin querulus, from queri to complain
Example: The querulous customer complained about every aspect of the meal, from the temperature of the soup to the size of the dessert.
Complaining is the act of expressing dissatisfaction or annoyance about something. A person who is constantly complaining is often referred to as querulous. This trait is not limited to just adults, as children can be just as querulous when they don't get their way. A person who is querulous may be seen as negative or difficult to please. While it is important to voice concerns and criticisms, being constantly querulous can be draining for those around them. It is important to find a balance between expressing dissatisfaction and being overly negative.

NATIONAL CREAM CHEESE BROWNIE DAY
On February 10, National Cream Cheese Brownie Day shines a spotlight on an irresistible dessert bar. Combining chocolate and cream cheese has long been a favorite in the bakery. When it's added to a brownie recipe the results are spectacular.
The brownie has been around since the 1800s but was first documented in 1906 in the cookbook The Boston Cooking School Cook Book. There are hundreds of cream cheese brownie recipes. However, we also enjoy them cut up into parfaits or mixed into ice cream. Add a dollop of whipped cream, berries or a sprinkle of nuts and fruit and they become a decadent dessert in their own right.
Adding cream to the batter once it's poured into the pan and swirling it around with a knife gives the finished product an elegant look. It even suggests a celebration when you look at it! No matter how you enjoy cream cheese brownies, we are sure that you will find one that you like.

Grammar Gurus: The Peculiar Rules of the English Language
The Land of Grammar Gurus
Welcome to the world of Grammar Gurus! In this realm, words are not just mere symbols used to communicate, but they are a piece of art, a puzzle, a challenge, and often a source of amusement. Here, we don't merely abide by the rules. We explore them, question them, and sometimes even get amused by them. Let's dive into some of the peculiar rules of the English language that make it intriguing and humorous at the same time.
The Odd One out: 'I' Before 'E' Except After 'C'
One of the most popular grammar rules that we all have come across at some point is the 'i' before 'e' except after 'c'. This rule suggests that in words, 'i' often precedes 'e', unless they follow 'c'. Words like 'believe', 'field', 'piece' follow this rule. So, you would assume that this rule is universal, right? Well, not quite! Welcome to the peculiarities of English language grammar where there are more exceptions than rules. Words like 'science', 'sufficient', 'weird' blatantly defy this rule. So, now you know why English is often termed a funny language.
The Plural of Goose but Not of Moose
In English, the plural of 'goose' is 'geese'. But wait! The plural of 'moose' is not 'meese'. It's 'moose', itself. This strange inconsistency has puzzled language learners for years. This is because 'goose' comes from an Old English word, which used a different system of making plurals. On the other hand, 'moose' is a Native American word, incorporated into English, and it doesn't follow the same rule.
The Rule of Silent 'K'
Ever wondered why there's a silent 'k' in words like 'knee', 'knife', or 'knight'? This peculiarity is due to history and phonetics. Earlier, the 'k' in these words was not silent. It was pronounced along with the following consonant. However, over time, the pronunciation changed, but the spelling remained the same, giving us the silent 'k'.
The Mysterious 'ough'
The 'ough' is perhaps one of the most perplexing combinations in English. It can be pronounced in at least eight different ways. For instance, it sounds like 'off' in 'cough', 'o' in 'though', 'oo' in 'through', and 'ou' in 'bough'. This is primarily because English borrows words from various languages, each with its own pronunciation rules.
Order of Adjectives
In English, the order of adjectives before a noun usually follows a specific pattern. It's typically - quantity, quality, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, and purpose. For instance, we say "six small old round red Italian leather armchairs" and not "Italian six leather red old round small armchairs". Altering this order might sound strange to a native speaker, although the meaning doesn't change.
The Unusual Plurals
English features several irregular plurals, which can be baffling for learners. For example, the plural of 'man' is 'men', 'tooth' becomes 'teeth', and 'mouse' turns into 'mice'. However, 'human' doesn't change to 'humen', and 'house' doesn't become 'hice'. This is because these words have retained their plurals from Old English, which used different methods of plural formation.
These peculiarities make the English language a labyrinth of rules and exceptions. However, they also add charm and character to the language, making the journey of learning exciting and engaging. So, the next time you stumble upon a strange grammar rule, remember that you are not alone. The world of Grammar Gurus always welcomes you with another twist in the tale.

As you watch the parades pass by today across the Crescent City, it's important to remember that New Orleanians take to the streets for many reasons besides #MardiGras!
Between the Civil War and the early 20th century, Black fraternal orders, such as Freemasons pictured here in 1952, sprang up in New Orleans and around the country. Driven by ideals of tolerance, benevolence, and mutual aid, they were forced to exist separate from white fraternal orders. Eventually, many of the Black orders would play a key role in the 20th century Civil Rights Movement.

1908: Royal Street Newsstand
The smallest newsstand in New Orleans in 1908 was located at 103 Royal Street. In addition to newspapers (local, Chicago, New York), the stand offered magazines and periodicals, postcards (3 for a nickel, 15-cents for a dozen), and who knows what all else. Barely bigger than a broom closet, with a fruit stand on one side and The Jewel lunch room on the other.

It will also be possible to learn about the numerous landmarks around the city where certain historical events took place.
The exhibit will be a companion to Mystery and Benevolence: Masonic and Odd Fellow Folk Art, which is a traveling exhibition debuting on February 16, 2024 and running until May 10, 2024. Organized by the American Folk Museum in New York, from the Kendra and Allan Daniel Collection, this exhibition is toured by International Art & Artists from Washington, DC.

Uptown, Tuesday MarketNext Market: February 6, 2024
8 am to 12 pm
Uptown Square
200 Broadway Street at the River
Directions and Parking Tips
The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.
RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.
From I-10
From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.
No Cash? No Problem!
All of our vendors accept cash and tokens. Swipe for tokens on-site at the orange Welcome Tent with debit, credit, or EBT SNAP.
Shop with SNAP!
Market Umbrella implements fresh food incentive programs such as Market Match, which doubles SNAP dollars spent at market for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. Starting January 1st, 2023, market match will be unlimited, allowing us to match each EBT dollar being swiped for on-site at the orange Welcome Tent.
Between June and the end of November, certified market vendors accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for both seniors and WIC participants. Market Umbrella is able to double FMNP benefits with tokens on-site at the Welcome Tent.

Chiefs vs. Niners
The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl LVIII after both teams won their respective conference championship games yesterday.
The Chiefs will be making their fourth trip to the title game in five years after beating the Baltimore Ravens on the road, 17-10. Tight end Travis Kelce caught all 11 passes thrown his way, including a touchdown, en route to breaking Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice's record for all-time playoff receptions (151). The game turned on a pair of endzone turnovers by the Ravens in the fourth quarter.
San Francisco topped the Detroit Lions 34-31 at home, holding the Lions to seven points in the second half and overcoming a 24-7 halftime deficit to reach their first championship since 2019. Star running back Christian McCaffrey ran for 90 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.
Super Bowl LVII takes place Sunday, Feb. 11 (6:30 pm ET, CBS), in Las Vegas, with R&B star Usher headlining the halftime show.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!
Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!
Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, Feb 1
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

The Covington Lions Club parade, followed by the Krewe of Bogue Falaya parade, rolls on Mardi Gras day this Tuesday, February 13th, at 10 a.m. in Covington! Roads close at 9 a.m., so be sure to get to your spot early.
Take a look at the following changes, suggestions, and reminders, and help us keep Mardi Gras in Covington a safe and family-friendly event:
Due to the combined length of the parades, they will not loop back through downtown for a second run. They will instead turn left onto Jefferson Avenue from 23rd Avenue and return to the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center staging area.
Vehicles cannot begin parking along the parade route before February 11th at 10 p.m. (36 hours before the parade) and must be removed before February 14th at 1 p.m. (24 hours after the parade). Parking cannot cause a safety hazard. You must have the property owner's permission if you park on private property.
On Jefferson Avenue, between 21st Avenue and 15th Avenue (near William Pitcher Junior High and St. Peter's Church), all vehicles, reviewing stands, tents, or trailers must be at least 8 feet from the road's edge.
Absolutely no driving on the parade route once it is closed.
The City is placing port-o-lets along the parade route. There should be a pair within a couple of blocks from everyone.
Public Works will have trash boxes set along the parade route. Each box will have an extra bag or two folded over the lip of the box. Once a bag is full, we're looking for a few Good Samaritans to remove the full bag, set it near the box, and insert a new bag.
Underage drinking will not be tolerated.
Rowdy or obnoxious behavior, fighting, or nudity will not be tolerated. This includes profanity or loud music with profanity.
Do not throw objects or interfere with participants in the parade.
In the interest of public safety, we would like to remind everyone to refrain from operating small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS), commonly referred to as drones, above large groups of people. The parade route has been designated a "police cordon" by the deployment of barricades and other structures designed to safeguard the well-being of those in attendance. Operating a drone within or above this protected area without prior authorization is not only illegal according to Louisiana Revised Statute 14:108, but also dangerous, as public safety services will be operating sUAS in the area. Violators of this statute will be subject to legal consequences as prescribed by law.
Only city-approved vendors with proper permits are allowed to sell along the parade route.
We want everyone to enjoy Mardi Gras in our wonderful city and ask that you assist us in providing a safe and respectful experience for all.
After the parade, join us at the Covington Trailhead for the Carnival in Covington after party from 1 p.m. till 4 p.m. for music, food trucks, and entertainment for the kids!

2024 Full Moon schedule

- Feb. 24 —7:30 a.m. — Snow Moon
- March 25 — 3 a.m. — Worm Moon
- April 23 — 7:49 p.m. — Pink Moon
- May 23 — 9:53 a.m. — Flower Moon
- June 21 — 9:08 p.m. — Strawberry Moon
- July 21 — 6:17 a.m. — Buck Moon
- Aug. 19 — 2:26 p.m. — Sturgeon Moon
- Sept. 17 — 10:34 p.m. — Corn Moon
- Oct. 17 — 7:26 a.m. — Hunter’s Moon
- Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
- Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon
For instance, almost every month’s Full Moon boasts a name sourced from Native American, Colonial American, or other North American traditions, with their titles mirroring seasonal shifts and nature’s events.
Wolf Moon (January): Inspired by the cries of hungry wolves.
Snow Moon (February): A nod to the month’s often heavy snowfall.
Worm Moon (March): Named after the earthworms that signal thawing grounds.
Pink Moon (April): In honor of the blossoming pink wildflowers.
Related: How to see the eclipse in April
Flower Moon (May): Celebrating the bloom of flowers.
Strawberry Moon (June): Marks the prime strawberry harvest season.
Buck Moon (July): Recognizing the new antlers on bucks.
Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.
Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.
Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.
Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.
Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.
In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.
Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.
Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.
Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

Errol Laborde’s Columns!
When Rex Met Zulu Explains Real Life Stories
That Could Happen Only in New Orleans
METAIRIE – Errol Laborde, author of a new book of his columns titled When Rex Met Zulu, will discuss it at 7 p.m., Monday, March 4, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
This event is free of charge and open to the public.
In chapters ranging from food and drink to history and ware, this book shares real life stories that could happen only in New Orleans. Errol Laborde was the force behind the now-beloved tradition of Zulu meeting Rex at Spanish Plaza on Lundi Gras before a loud, excited crowd on the eve of Fat Tuesday. He tells that origin story ere, along with other vignettes adapted from his national award-winning Streetcar column in New Orleans Magazine.
Errol Laborde, the editor of New Orleans Magazine, has won more than 25 New Orleans Press Club Awards for outstanding journalism since 1972. He is also the founding president and a current board member of the annual Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
