Dear friend of the parks,

With eyes on Chicago for the Democratic National Convention this week, it is essential to remember and honor Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, a Black man of Haitian descent whose vision transformed the Chicago River into a thriving center of commerce. His work alongside Indigenous communities laid the foundation for the diverse, vibrant city we know today.

DuSable, alongside his Potawatomi wife, Kittihawa, played a crucial role in the growth of this magnificent city. Yet, despite his significant contributions, DuSable’s legacy was nearly forgotten—until Mayor Harold Washington insisted that Chicago must never forget the man who dared to build a future here.

We hope you can help keep the memory of DuSable’s legacy strong by joining Friends of the Parks and leaders of the DuSable Park Coalition this Saturday, August 24 at 11:00 am, 401 N. Michigan Avenue, for our Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony.

As usual, we look forward to being inspired by the array of speakers, reflective during the intertribal land acknowledgment ceremony, and enlightened by history lessons while strolling down the riverwalk.

We are also looking forward to a new twist: a canoe procession! The wreath we lay upon the bust of DuSable will be carried from the north bank of the river to the shore, symbolizing DuSable’s journey as he navigated these very waters as part of establishing the settlement that would become present-day Chicago. If you would like to join the flotilla of canoes, learn more here.

Looking east from the Michigan Avenue bridge. A very different view--and river direction--than DuSable knew!

Site of the long-awaited DuSable Park, from the north side of the river and under the Navy Pier flyover.

However, this event is not just about honoring DuSable. It is a call for the completion of a park in his honor. Over three decades ago, Mayor Washington called for the land at the confluence of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan to be turned into a park in DuSable's honor—a promise that remains unfulfilled. Although the design process is nearing the final stages, much work still lies ahead to ensure the park moves from vision to reality.

So please join us this Saturday in this critical moment of advocacy and to honor the man who had the vision and courage to build Chicago. Let us ensure that his contributions are never forgotten.

With forward momentum,

Gin Kilgore
