The Notebook from Bor

Miklós Radnóti

A Bori Notesz

Tuesday, November 4th 7:30pm

kedd. november 4én, este 7:30

“This little notebook contains poems by the Hungarian poet Miklós Radnóti. I ask the finder of it, to send it to Hungary [...]”

The request beginning with the above lines can be read in five languages on the first two pages of a small notebook found in Radnóti’s jacket pocket, which was exhumed from a mass grave in 1946, the year after World War II. Written in the Bor labor camp during World War II, the “The Bor notebook” is a defining document of Radnóti’s tragic fate and poetic greatness.
„Ez a jegyzőkönyvecske Radnóti Miklós magyar költő verseit tartalmazza. Kéri megtalálót, hogy juttassa el Magyarországra [...]”

A fenti sorokkal kezdődő kérés a második világháború utáni évben, 1946-ban tömegsírból exhumált Radnóti kabátzsebében talált kis füzet első két oldalán olvasható öt nyelven. A II. világháború alatt, a bori munkatáborban írt „Bori notesz” Radnóti tragikus sorsának és költői nagyságának meghatározó dokumentuma: ezek a versek a magyar irodalom egyik legmegrázóbb emlékét képviselik.

While this will only be presented in Hungarian, we suggest those that are interested to learn more on this impactful compilation, refer to the English translation published under the title Clouded Sky by Miklós Radnóti. This event is co-produced with the Liszt Institute of New York.

As we approach the close of 2025, we reflected on what more we can do, and what achievements we have accomplished this past year for our community. In our 2025 Annual Appeal for Donations (EN - pdf) (HU - pdf) we ask for your support so we can continue to offer valuable and interesting programs for decades to come. In 2026, we will honor the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, as well as celebrate the 60th anniversary of the purchase of the Hungarian House building. But we need your help to continue on our mission to serve the community in our cherished Civil War-era building in the heart of Manhattan's old "Little Hungary". Please donate or become a member today. There are membership programs and donation levels that match the contribution you wish to make. Either print and mail in the below form (pdf) with a check, or donate online at www.hungarianhouse.org/support.
