ZECHARIAH THE PROPHET – LESSON 14
JERUSALEM – THE CITY OF DAVID – PART 3

Zechariah 8:3 spoke of Jerusalem, also called Zion, as His “Holy Mountain” as it is located on Mount Moriah.

It is also called “the city of David” because it is from God’s favorite, King David, who ruled in Jerusalem, that God the Son would be born. Just as David ruled in Jerusalem, so shall “The Son of David,” Jesus, rule also in Jerusalem in His future kingdom. It is God’s chosen capitol city for His chosen people.

Only in Luke 2:4 and 11 is Bethlehem called “the city of David.” This is understandable because David was born in Bethlehem because it was a village on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Bethlehem also supplied the sacrificial lambs for the Temple of God in Jerusalem. Bethlehem provided Jesus, the Lamb of God. (John 1:29), who was also sacrificed in Jerusalem.

Let us look historically at how God’s “holy mountain” (Zach. 8:3) came also to be called “the city of David.” The physical location of Jerusalem had been inhabited long before Abraham, before 2000 B.C., by the Jebus tribe, (called Jebusites). God told Abram that he would be given the land of several Canaanites including the site of the Jebusites (Genesis 15:21).

We spoke yesterday of Melchizedek’s encounter with Abraham. He was God’s High Priest in Salem, which is Jeru-Salem. This was prior to 1900 B.C. Jerusalem is also mentioned in Egyptian tablets from Tell-el-Amarna dated c 1400 B.C. which speaks of a troublous people called “Habiru” in Egyptian cuneiform, referring to “Hebrew” and mentions “U-ru-sa-lim” that is to mean “city of peace.” Note that the letters “Y” and “J” are both pronounced as our letter “U”. It is clearly the name of Je-ru-sa-lem. It was inhabited by the Jebusites and also called Jebus after their name.

Joshua (c. 1451 B.C.) in chapter 10:1 speaks of a miraculous victory over Jerusalem and their allies. It uses the present-day Hebrew spelling of “Yerushalayim.” In Joshua 15:8 the dwelling of the Jebusites (Jebus), Judges 19:11 is clearly stated to be the same as Jerusalem.

How did this site, the holy mountain of the LORD of hosts (Zechariah 8:3) come to be also called “the city of David”?

I Samuel 16 tells of Samuel, instructed by God to anoint David to be king in place of Saul. David did not immediately replace Saul. Instead, he reigned as king of the southernmost part of Israel, Hebron, (where Abraham had lived 900 years earlier), for seven years while Saul still ruled most of Israel. David had an army of several hundred men who joined with him in Hebron. Saul ruled Israel from his hometown of Gibeah where he had built a fortress. After Saul was killed in battle, the men of Judah (II Samuel 2:4) anointed David as King over Judah. The civil war that followed between Saul’s remaining family and David’s people resulted in David gaining full control over all Israel. This began his 33-year reign over a United Kingdom. He ruled a total of forty years, seven in Hebron and 33 over all Israel.

David moved the capitol from Gibeah to Jerusalem. The story is told in II Samuel 5:6-13 how he went to Jebus and smote the Jebusites and took the city of Jebus (Jerusalem) as his capitol. It is called “the city of David” in verse 9.

The prophet and priest Samuel said that God had called David as king because he was a “man after his (God’s) own heart.” (I Samuel 13:14). That is why God’s holy city (mountain) Jerusalem, is also called “The city of David.”

God saw David’s heart rather than his “externals.” He also sees your heart. Men only see the externals, but God knows your heart, even your very thoughts. Men judge on the outside; only God can see the inside of you. May all your delight be unto God. (Psalm 37:4), as it was with David, may it be so with you.

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION

If you watched the movie “The Passion of Christ” then you know that Jesus’ passion was to come into the world and to die for the sins of mankind. He set his face like a flint for this purpose. Yes, there was the time in the garden that He asked the Father if it were possible to remove the cup from Him, but His prayer ended with “Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” He knew his purpose and He fulfilled it.

Whatever it is that causes you to get up in the morning and just “be” is your passion. If it is being the best mother that you can be then you will be “passionate” about it. If you are a teacher then be passionate about it. You may never have children or be married but have sought a career that God has led you to. Be passionate about it. Give it your all.

When we know the will of God for our lives, then we must be passionate to do everything in our power to bring it to pass. Like Ephesians 6 tells us, in verse 13b it says, “…having done all, to stand.

Some are called to great things in the eyes of the world like Fortune 500 businesses, while others are called to raise the child that will be the next President. We should never be envious of someone else’s assignment because it takes every “call” to represent God.

Someone has the call to be passionate in the marketplace, while others are in the classroom. Some are caregivers in hospitals and nursing homes. Some are childcare providers, while others are writers. Whatever the call, do it with the same passion Jesus had. Lay down your will and surrender it to God’s will, and you will find your life will be fulfilled.

Prophetic word
as given to Helen Sanders

Look to me today, my child, look to me. Focus your attention on me today, my child. Take your eyes off the events of the world, and draw close to me. I am about to do a new thing, I am about to bring down and raise up. I am the one that will shake, and when I shake, the whole world will know it, saith the Lord of Hosts. I am bringing to pass what I have said I would do. Yes, my people, be aware that this is the hour of increase. Increase in the work I have called you to do. Increase in all that I have ordained you to do. I will increase what your hands have been set to. I will bring forth and there will be no lack. I will sustain thee through these troublesome times, but look not to the world for your gain, look not to others, but look to me. I am the one that shall supply saith the Lord. I have said, it and I say it again. I am your supply. I am your strength, I am your shield for safety, and nothing shall harm you saith the Lord. Look not back, saith the Lord, for there is nothing there. Look not ahead, for I am not there. I am the God of the now time. I am here, and I am for you saith the Lord. I will raise up, and I will bring down, but keep your eyes focused on me. For I am doing what I said I would do. Cast your cares on me saith the Lord, for I am well able to bear them, and will bear them as you cast them on me, saith the Lord. Look not to the left or right, but stay focused on me, saith the Lord. Stay focused on me, for I am with you to guide you and direct you as you stay focused on me. Look not at the terror around you saith the Lord, for that is not your concern, it is my concern, and I AM well able to take care of it, as you focus on me. Keep your heart fixed on ME saith the Lord. Keep focused on me!! For I will accomplish what I have promised, saith the Lord.

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION
3-5-2021

We know that David won the battle when he killed the giant in I Samuel 17. But even though he won that battle; His warfare days were far from being over. So it is with you and I today as we each have our own battles to fight. Oh, how we all thank God for the times we win, but then there are the other times that we’ve gone down in defeat. I’d like to think that you have more victories than you have defeats. However, in each of our lives we WILL lose a battle at times; And no, that’s not a bad confession...It’s just the facts of life and living in the real world. Let me encourage you today and tell you that even when you do lose a battle...You are still a winner. You can have joy and peace in knowing this...That yes, you may have lost the battle you just came through; But because of what Jesus did for you on Calvary’s Cross; You can thank Him that you have already WON the WAR. So today, by faith walk tall with your head held high and peace in your heart because you have The Victor (Christ Jesus) living in you and through you...And He has already given you the victory. (I Cor.‬ ‭15:57‬) So take joy in knowing that with God on your side...You will come through it all wearing the victor’s crown. No, you won’t win every battle you fight; But because of Jesus, you definitely have got this one. As the old saying goes...”You may lose a battle now and then; But praise God you have already won the war”.
