When Jesus was suffering on the cross, there was a discussion going on between the two thieves on each side of them. They had committed crimes and were worthy of the death penalty. In Isaiah 53:12 is a prophecy that says: “…and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many…” In Mark 15:27-28 that scripture is fulfilled.
“And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, ‘and he was numbered with the transgressors’.”
In Luke 23:39:-43
“And one of the malefactors (thieves) which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
