NATIONAL ZOO LOVERS DAY

Each year on April 8th, National Zoo Lovers Day encourages us to explore our local zoos. Each year millions of people visit zoos and learn about the many animals that live there. Also known as zoological parks, many of them serve as breeding centers. These facilities are relied upon when species are endangered or at risk of becoming endangered. They also provide education to the public about a broad variety of animals and their habitats.

Enjoy seeing your favorite animals swinging from the trees or splashing in the water and have a fun-filled day.

A few zoo facts:

  • The Vienna Zoo is the oldest existing zoo and was opened to the public in 1765.
  • The United State’s first zoo open to the public, Central Park Zoo, opened in 1864 in New York.
  • Philadelphia Zoo holds the oldest zoo charter, formed in 1859. It officially opened to the public in 1874.
  • There are 350 zoos in the United States
  • Approximately 175 million people visit a zoo each year.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom has had more than 9.8 million annual visitors.
  • More than 3.2 million people visit the San Diego Zoo each year.

THE RACE FOR ALL Y’ALL

Since 1979, the Crescent City Classic 10k has been a New Orleans tradition. The race, which takes place every year on the Saturday before Easter Sunday, is produced locally by the Crescent City Fitness Foundation, a not-for-profit 5013c entity. People of all physical abilities participate, including world-class runners, joggers, walkers, wheelchair athletes, kids in strollers, and even those with rolling beer coolers.

The starting line of the 10-kilometer course (6.2 miles) is Downtown New Orleans in front of the Caesars Superdome. From there, participants (many in costume) run through the French Quarter, all the way up beautiful Esplanade Avenue to New Orleans City Park where they cross the finish line under the cool, shady, ancient live oak trees.

The events surrounding the Crescent City Classic make for a jam-packed Easter weekend. The fun includes a two-day Health & Fitness Expo, free and open to the public. And many runners sign up simply to attend the post-race party hosted by Michelob Ultra, complete with live music from local bands and world-famous New Orleans cuisine!

This fast, point-to-point course is a USAT&F sanctioned and certified 10,000 meters. It starts in front of the Caesars Superdome on Poydras St., proceeds down Poydras, bears left on Convenetion Center Blvd. then left onto Canal St., before continuing onto N Peters St., where it passes historical Jackson Square. Participants run through the French Quarter, past Cafe Du Monde and the French Market, before taking a left on Esplanade Ave. The course continues down beautiful Esplanade Ave. to the front of New Orleans City Park on City Park Ave. The remainder of the course takes place inside the park, passing by Storyland, before finishing on Lelong Ave. just before the New Orleans Museum of Art, exactly 6.2 miles from the start. For your own safety: no bikes, rollerblades, skates or pets (other than service animals) are allowed on the course.

Please be sure to hydrate prior to and during the race. Nearly all health issues on Race Day are related to dehydration. New Orleans EMS units will be stationed throughout the course and at the finish line, along with the LCMC Health medical team. If you cannot finish the race, we will have a vehicle trailing the race that can transport you to the Finish Line.

This exhibit celebrates light—the quintessential element of photography—and the shadows that the help define the emotion, detail and information contained in the photograph. In classic Film Noir movies, shadows accentuated mystery and mood and exposed character and motive. Show us how light and shadow reveal the meaning of your image.

The content of the photographs for this exhibit can range from portraits to still lifes to landscapes. Note that all photos must be made from black and white film, printed in a darkroom. - Dr. Leslie Parr

NATIONAL EMPANADA DAY

Each year on April 8th, National Empanada Day recognizes a delicious pastry that comes in several different forms. The name empanada comes from the Galician, Portuguese and Spanish verb em pandar, meaning to wrap or coat in bread.

Empanadas are made by folding the dough or bread around a seasoned stuffing. The stuffed dough is then baked or fried. Very much like hand pies, these delicious pastries offer a variety of choices. You can make your empanadas with meat, cheese, vegetables or fruit fillings. However, they may be made with other ingredients, too.

A cookbook published in 1520 in Catalan, the Libre del Coch by Ruperto de Nola, mentions empanadas filled with seafood.

If you’ve never had an empanada, you might be surprised just how versatile they are. Different parts of the United States make them with their own style and flavors. Starting in the Southern and Southwestern United States where an empanada is called a Creole empanada, the dish becomes a savory meal. There, they fill the half-circle flaky crust with seasoned pork, beef or chicken, and cheese.

Head to the Southeastern part of the country and empanadas transform. A little more on the sweeter side, they fill these pastries with fresh or reconstituted dry fruit. Some choices include apples, apricots, peaches or sweet potatoes. Once fried, the pies have a crispy outer shell with piping hot fruit inside.

Further west in New Mexico, making empanadas for Christmas is a winter tradition. They make sweetmeats, similar to mincemeat, using ground pork, sugar, pinon nuts, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Everything is then sealed in a tortilla-like dough and deep-fried in lard.

NATIONAL ALL IS OURS DAY

Observed each year on April 8th, National All Is Ours Day takes us along three views of appreciation. Celebrate each of the approaches to the day or pick the one that best suits you.

The first approach to the day can be looked at as a time to reflect on all of the beauty of nature and all the wonderful things in life. Rarely do we have the time to explore all that nature offers us. Something as simple as the variety of birds that inhabit a local park or backyard can surprise us. Venturing further out, we can discover our National Parks or trail system. Whether we look up to the skies or closer at the new spring blooms, taking in our surroundings is a spectacular gift to enjoy.

The second way to celebrate the day is by appreciating everything we have. Even when we don’t have much, what we do have is a blessing. This approach encourages counting those blessings and avoiding thinking about the things we do not have.

A third way to view the day is by sharing all that we have. Regardless of what we have, sharing it seems to make tough times easier when we all work together. The greatest times and the greatest things in life are those that are shared.

NOLA Jitterbugs swing dance series with LIVE music in the last class! New 6-week series starts Monday March 27th at The Contemporary Arts Center.

7pm Beginners

8pm Intermediate/Advanced

BEGINNERS at 7pm

This class is for those new to swing dancing or need to brush up on the basics of moving with a partner to jazz, swing, & blues. No partner is required to join this class as we rotate partners as we learn. Live music featured in the last class to put your new skills into action!

If you took our last beginner series we recommend taking this one as well. After the last series, we made some adjustments to the flow and restructured it to get you swinging out sooner rather than later. (and with low stress)

Teachers: This series is taught by the entire NOLA Jitterbugs Collective

Community Office Hours (COH) is intended to provide an opportunity to discuss issues within the community and give residents the opportunity for direct dialogue with City staff about interests and concerns. This program enables City Hall to be accessible and helpful to more residents within neighborhoods. This effort supports a two-way street of effective communication and information flow for addressing neighborhood-level issues.

Your liaison will be available to assist you in your district, Monday through Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns and would like to book an appointment for assistance, please visit nola.gov/coh or give us a call at (504) 658-4985.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:

La Vie En Rose Cafe

Meet Kirby Jones, the owner of La Vie En Rose! Kirby, a former vendor with the markets’ Green Plate Special, is excited to join the Crescent City Farmers Market as a full-time vendor at the Sunday City Park Market serving up Creole coffee cold brew blends, seasonal cakes, and pastries. What started out as a bike cafe popup at Martin’s Wine Cellar has bloomed into a flourishing business for the mother of two. With deep roots in New Orleans Creole culture dating back to the 1800s, Kirby first fell in love with coffee when her grandmother, who lived across the street from the sugarcane fields in Lutcher, LA, handed her a cup of coffee and bunny bread to dip in it. Be sure to stop by La Vie En Rose’s table and check out their cold brew and one-of-a-kind cakes and pastries!

FOR THE LOVE OF COLOR!

MUSEUM NOW OFFERS ENCHROMA GLASSES FOR COLOR BLIND AUDIENCES TO EXPERIENCE COLOR

As part of our mission of accessibility and inclusion, Ogden Museum of Southern Art has partnered with EnChroma to make the colors in our artwork accessible to the color blind. Color blind guests can now borrow EnChroma glasses for color blindness at Ogden Museum for the duration of their visit.

Imagine being unable to see all the colors in a beautiful painting, a flower, a sunset, or the color of a loved one’s eyes? While people with normal color vision see over one million shades and hues, those with color vision deficiency only see up to 10% of colors. An estimated 350 million people worldwide are color blind: 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women (.5%). That means that over 1.9 million people in Louisiana and over 160,000 people in New Orleans are color blind and yet until now no museum in the state of Louisiana or in the city of New Orleans included accessibility options for this significant population.

Ogden Museum is proud to be the first museum in Louisiana to offer this new option for color blind guests.

Ask for Enchroma glasses at the front desk when you purchase your tickets to experience our art in full color!

Questions? Learn more about our accessibility accommodations!

Short video segments, workshops, and a giant puppet parade are on the schedule of events.

This year’s event spans over five days (April 13-17) and venues include: The Mudlark Public Theatre at 1200 Port Street; Happyland Theater at 3126 Burgundy Street; The Backyard Ballroom at 3519 St. Claude; CANOA at 4210 St. Claude; The Allways Lounge (Twilight Room) at 2240 St. Claude; and the Spellcaster Lounge at 3052 St. Claude. Barrow’s

1200 Poydras Street Suite 102, CBD

Originally called Barrow’s Shady Inn, New Orleans’s favorite catfish restaurant Barrow’s opened a new location in the CBD at the beginning of April (next to Chick-fil-A). The third generation of the Barrow family reopened Barrow’s, which first opened in Hollygrove in the ’40s, for the first time since Hurricane Katrina in 2018 on Earhart Boulevard a few years back, but that address has been temporarily closed for some time now (recently, the family opened a location on the Westbank in Harvey). The fried catfish has been legendary here for decades — light, thin-cut, flaky, and crunchy — and Barrow’s is loved for its potato salad, gumbo, and po’ boys.

How to Use FamilySearch User Group on FaceBook

METAIRIE – Steve Williams, a local resident who co-founded the FamilySearch Users Group on Facebook, will speak at 7 p.m., Monday, April 17, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

The session – part of the meeting of the Genealogical Research Society of New Orleans – is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration.

FamilySearch Users Group on Facebook is a forum to learn, discuss topics and help others. Williams will share his insights on navigating FamilySearch and suggest techniques for getting the most from this vast resource. His presentation will cover a variety of FamilySearch topics, such as searching through catalogs and images, making corrections, and collaborating with others using FamilySearch Tree.

Williams created FamilySearch Users Group with a friend five years ago. The site has grown to more than 17,000 Facebook users. His first experience with genealogy occurred when he was very young, following his dad through cemeteries and courthouses. Later in life, he worked as an intelligence analyst for a federal law enforcement agency, building his skills for finding information. He began applying those skills to genealogy, renewing his interest in it.

"When my dad became sick, I had a lot of free time comparing his notes with online databases," Williams says. "And since he never touched a computer, I had a clean slate to work on."

For more information regarding this presentation, contact Chris Smith, Manager of Adult Programming for the library, at 504-889-8143
