WINTER SOLSTICE
The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs annually between December 20th and December 23rd.
The winter solstice is marked by the point at which the North Pole is at its farthest from the sun during its yearly orbit around the sun. It will be approximately 23 degrees away from the sun. Despite the temperature outside, the winter solstice is considered the astronomical beginning of winter. Meteorological winter begins December 1st and lasts until the end of February. It's marked by the coldest average temperatures during the year.
Depending on how far north a person is in the Northern Hemisphere during the winter, their day can range from 9.5 hours to absolutely no sunrise at all. On the bright side, the days will gradually become longer in the Northern Hemisphere until the summer solstice in June. In the Southern Hemisphere, this same day marks the summer solstice and the Southern Hemisphere's longest day of the year.
The vernal equinox and the autumnal equinox conventionally mark the beginning of spring and fall respectively and occur when night and day are approximately equal in length.
Around the world since ancient times to modern-day, celebrations, festivals, rituals, and holidays recognizing the winter solstice have varied from culture to culture.

YULE
On the arrival of the Winter Solstice, we observe Yule.
Also known as Jul, Yule predates the Christmas holiday by thousands of years. Linguists debate the origin of the word Yule. Some suggest the word is derived from "Iul," the Anglo-Saxon word for wheel. This makes a connection to a Celtic calendar, the Wheel of the Year. However, in the Norse culture, "Jul" refers to the god, Odin. Odin was celebrated during Yule as well.
Yule celebrations included bonfires, decorating with holly, mistletoe, and the boughs of evergreen trees, ritual sacrifices, feasts, and gift-giving.
Many Christmas Traditions Borrowed From Yule
Many of the traditions we use at Christmastime were borrowed from Yule traditions of old. Whether they are from myths, feasts, folklore, ancient beliefs, oral stories told, or festivals, we have woven them into the fabric of our modern-day customs. Do you recognize any Christmas traditions borrowed from Yule?
- The midwinter feast usually lasted 12 days.
- Vikings decorated evergreen trees with gifts such as food, carvings, and food for the tree spirits to encourage them to return in the spring.
- Mistletoe combined with a mother's tears resurrected her son, the God of Light and Goodness, in a Viking myth. The Celts believe Mistletoe possessed healing powers as well and would ward off evil spirits.
- In Norse tradition, Old Man Winter visited homes to join the festivities. The Viking god, Odin was described as a wanderer with a long white beard and is considered the first Father Christmas.
- Viking children left their shoes out by the hearth on the eve of the winter solstice with sugar and hay for Odin's eight-legged horse, Sleipnir.
- Children traipsed from house to house with gifts of apples and oranges spiked with cloves and resting in baskets lined with evergreen boughs.
- The Yule log was a whole tree meant to be burned for 12 days in the hearth. The Celts believed the sun stood still during the winter solstice. They thought by keeping the Yule log burning for these 12 days encouraged the sun to move, making the days longer. The largest end would be fed into the hearth, wine poured over it. They lit it with the remains of the previous year's Yule log. Everyone took turns feeding the length of timber into the fire as it burned. Letting it burn out would bring bad luck.

While the parking lot is closed off to house the market, there is plenty of parking along Marconi and surrounding streets. Please be diligent about following parking signs and only park in clearly marked spaces with perpendicular markings. DO NOT park in the bike lanes, as this makes our market space unsafe to bikers and pedestrians and threatens our ability to continue operating the market here. No parking allowed on the neutral ground. Please don't pull up into the market driveway for recycling pick ups or drop offs. Thank you for understanding!
RTA Bus Route 27: Louisiana passes right by market! Click here to view more details about route 27.

Lost Words Rediscovered: Exploring Forgotten Gems of the English Language
Language is a fascinating aspect of human existence. It evolves, adapts, and transforms over time, reflecting the ever-changing world we inhabit. English, as a language, has undergone significant changes throughout history, resulting in the loss of many unique and captivating words. In this blog post, we embark on a journey to rediscover some of these forgotten gems and explore their meanings and origins.
1. Serendipity: The Joy of Unexpected Discoveries
One such word that has fallen out of use but deserves a resurrection is "serendipity." Coined by Horace Walpole in 1754, this word describes the occurrence of making delightful discoveries by chance. It encapsulates the feeling of stumbling upon something incredible when you least expect it.
Imagine wandering through the winding corridors of a musty old bookstore and unexpectedly stumbling upon a book you've been searching for years. That exhilarating sense of serendipity is something we should celebrate and embrace in our lives.
2. Petrichor: The Scent of Rain on Dry Earth
Have you ever noticed that distinct earthy smell that fills the air after a rain shower? That's the scent of petrichor, another forgotten word that deserves a revival. Coined by scientists Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Thomas in 1964, petrichor refers to the unique aroma that arises when rainwater interacts with the soil.
This word captures the essence of nature's perfume, evoking memories of childhood puddle-jumping and the soothing sound of raindrops on your windowpane. Next time you take a walk after a storm, breathe in deeply and revel in the petrichor that surrounds you.
3. Mellifluous: The Beauty of Harmonious Sounds
In a world filled with noise and chaos, the word "mellifluous" serves as a reminder of the beauty found in harmonious sounds. Derived from the Latin words mel (honey) and fluere (to flow), this forgotten gem describes something that is sweet and smooth, often referring to voices or music.
Think of the melodious tones of a talented singer or the gentle lullaby sung by a parent to their child. These instances of mellifluousness can transport us to a realm of tranquility and peace, offering an escape from the cacophony of everyday life.
4. Limerence: The All-Consuming Passion
Love has always been a complex and enigmatic emotion, and the English language once had a word that perfectly encapsulated the all-consuming passion felt during the early stages of infatuation - limerence. Coined by psychologist Dorothy Tennov in the 1970s, limerence refers to an intense state of longing and desire for another person.
Limerence goes beyond mere attraction or affection; it is an overwhelming obsession that can dominate one's thoughts and emotions. While the term has fallen out of common usage, the concept it represents remains a familiar experience for many.
5. Apricity: The Warmth of Sunlight on a Winter's Day
Winter brings cold, grey days that often leave us longing for the warmth of sunlight. In the English language, the word "apricity" once described the specific warmth and comfort that sunlight provides on a chilly winter day. Though seldom used today, apricity reminds us of the simple joy found in basking in the sun's gentle rays, even during the coldest months.
Take a moment to imagine yourself sitting near a sunlit window, feeling the subtle caress of warmth on your skin. This image conjures a feeling of coziness and contentment, offering solace amidst the winter's chill.
Conclusion
As the English language continues to evolve, it is essential to revisit and revive forgotten words that hold unique meanings and evoke vivid imagery. Words like serendipity, petrichor, mellifluous, limerence, and apricity offer us a glimpse into the rich tapestry of human experiences and emotions.
By embracing these linguistic treasures, we not only expand our vocabulary but also deepen our understanding of the world and our place within it. So, let us celebrate the rediscovery of these forgotten gems and allow them to enrich our conversations, writing, and appreciation of the beauty of language.

NATIONAL FRENCH FRIED SHRIMP DAY
On December 21st, seafood lovers celebrate National French Fried Shrimp Day. Enjoyed all year long, this delicious dish delights many across the country.
Americans eat more shrimp than any other seafood.
The word prawn is used loosely to describe any large shrimp, sometimes known as jumbo shrimp. Some countries use the word prawn exclusively for all shrimp.
Preparing the shrimp for consumption usually involves the removal of the head, shell, tail, and sand vein. There are many ways to cook shrimp. Common methods of preparation include baking, boiling, broiling, sauteing, frying, and grilling.
Cooking time is delicate for shrimp and they are at their best when not over cooked.
A healthy food, shrimp is low in calories and high in levels of omega-3s, calcium, iodine, and protein. Shrimp is also known to be considered good for the circulatory system. *The preparation of the shrimp does impact the caloric count.

Please join us with ANNE OF GREEN GABLES curator Barbara Heller and scribe Debra Fleming for a book signing and puzzle purse how-to. Puzzle purses were a popular form of Valentine in the nineteenth century. Diana Barry’s “most fearfully and wonderfully twisted and folded” note to Anne was likely a puzzle purse and is presented as one (created by Debra Fleming) in this amazing special edition. Come fold and decorate one of your own!
The must-have volume for Anne of Green Gables fans: This special edition invites readers inside the beloved story with gorgeous replicas of the characters' letters and mementos.
Anne of Green Gables has been treasured by generations of dreamers and free spirits. For those who love to indulge in flights of fancy, Anne’s world offers escape and inspiration. Now, your imagination can take tangible form with this deluxe edition of L. M. Montgomery’s classic novel, the latest volume in the swoon-worthy Handwritten Classics series curated by Barbara Heller.
Throughout these pages, you will find pockets containing replicas of thirteen items from the story recreated with charming handwriting and loving attention to historical detail. Discover the notes passed between Anne and her bosom friend Diana in the Avonlea schoolhouse; the official program of the Debating Club, where Gilbert Blythe memorably recited “Bingen on the Rhine”; and of course, Marilla’s recipes for both raspberry cordial and currant wine. Each piece of ephemera transports you to idyllic Prince Edward Island.
For anyone who loves Anne of Green Gables and for anyone who still cherishes the joy of paper mementos, this collector's edition will illuminate a classic story in a whole new way.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,December 23
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

NEW ORLEANS – The Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy, in collaboration with the Health Department, is excited to announce a developing series of Narcan and Stop the Bleed trainings to equip hospitality workers with critical, life-saving skills. These free trainings will provide participants with the knowledge to respond effectively to overdose incidents and severe injuries, helping to make the nightlife community safer. To maximize accessibility, trainings will be scheduled in neighborhoods across the city.
Narcan training sessions will include free Narcan for all participants, while Stop the Bleed training will cover essential skills for managing bleeding emergencies. As an extra incentive to participate, The Broadside will offer free movie tickets to a screening at the Broad Theater for the first 15 attendees at each of their hosted sessions.
Upcoming Training Schedule

St. John Fools of Misrule Twelfth Night March
Date: Jan. 11
Location: Historic Downtown Covington
The St. John Fools of Misrule heralds the arrival of Carnival season on the Northshore with its 14th annual Feast of Fools and March, taking place Saturday, January 11, 2025. The "Fools" (men) and "Jewels" (women) of this marching krewe take to the streets of Covington on the Saturday closest to Twelfth Night, also known as King's Day or The Epiphany.
The St. John Fools of Misrule take their name from the historic St. John District in Covington through which they march each year, and the “Foolish Tradition” itself comes from an ancient English custom whereby men “clamored along the evening streets creating unruliness with cowbells and whips while delivering jeers and spankings to those caught on the street unaware.”
This procession through Covington's historic St. John District begins first with a members-only "Feast of Fools" at 4:00 p.m. at Seiler Bar and Columbia Street Tap Room & Grill (434 N. Columbia St.). Then, at 6:00 p.m., the beautifully costumed krewe marches from Seiler Bar to the Covington Trailhead to crown the "Lord of Misrule." The revelers, including flambeaux, a brass band and masked marchers in extravagant medieval attire, then set out to carouse through downtown Covington. Learn more at https://www.foolsofmisrule.org/

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians
The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.
Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.
Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.
And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
