CHRISTMAS CARD DAY
Each year around this time, friends and families begin mailing their holiday cards. Christmas Card Day on December 9th serves as a reminder to get your stamps, envelopes, and cards together so you can share your holiday cheer.
Sending a card during the holidays hasn't always been a tradition. In Victorian England, sending Penny Post was inexpensive and frequent. It was also considered rude to ignore a written message. One particularly popular Victorian invented the holiday card out of necessity. Sir Henry Cole received frequent letters, and it left him little time for other responsibilities. In 1843, he asked his friend J.C. Horsley to illustrate a design he had in mind. Soon, Cole was off to the printer, and he mailed the first Christmas card in the Penny Post to friends, family, and many acquaintances.
Today, we mail a variety of cards at Christmastime. The tradition of Christmas cards continues in a broader sense. Social and electronic media keep us connected in this modern world more than ever before. However, the Christmas card continues to be a part of our annual tradition, even if it takes on a different style or pattern.
- Photo cards - Many families take an annual holiday photo specifically for mailing to friends and family. These photos may be snapshots or professional photos. Most families save them from social media, so they remain a surprise when they arrive in the mail, too.
- Christmas letter - These letters often highlight the events for each family member for the year. Not everyone has social media, so it's a nice way to catch up with friends and family. The letters usually run a page in length, but some letter writers have a lot more to say.
- Postcards - These simple cards generally send the same holiday message a regular Christmas card does, but without a fold or an envelope. With a photo on one side and a simple message on the other, they are quick and easy to send, too.
- Business card - Christmas cards also come from businesses who want to remind us they still want our business. As a marketing tool, businesses know their best customers like to be remembered during the holidays, too.
- New Year's cards - The holidays do get busy, and some of us put off sending any holiday cards until New Year. They still want to keep in touch with family and friends, so they send their good wishes in the form of a Happy New Year card. So, don't mark anyone off your Christmas card list until after the first of the year.
These holiday cards may be the only communication we receive all year long from a friend or family member. Even if we spent an abundance of time with them once, these once-a-year notes touch us with a bit of meaning this time of year. We take the time to connect once again and say, "We're thinking of you."

Stanton Moore Spirit of New Orleans Drum Camp
- December 9, 2023
- 9:30 AM
- Sunday, December 10, 20235:30 PM
- New Orleans Jazz Museum
- 400 Esplanade Ave.New OrleansUnited States
This camp is for players of all skill levels! Each attendee will have the option to rent a practice kit or bring their own practice pad or practice pad kit. There will be four one and a half hour sessions each day. Some of the topics we will cover will be several styles and beats that I believe you'll need to know when you are playing with people in the real world. Some of you may have encountered some of these grooves and may even feel comfortable with them already. If so, you can "check that" off your personal checklist. But, I'll also be demonstrating some embellishments and nuances that even the more advanced players can work on to enhance what they are already able to play. I will be sending PDFs in advance of the material that we will cover.
We'll be covering the following:
- 16th Note Funk with One Hand
- Improving Your Shuffle
- The Halftime Shuffle
- The Triplet Shuffle
- Samba
- Bossa Nova
- Mozambique
- Train Beats
- Improving Your Swing Feel
- Ballad with Brushes
- 5 Meters Tunes Based off the Ratcliff Beat
- New Orleans Traditional Second Line and Big Chief
I've found that these grooves pop up in a lot of gigging and recording situations and even if they don't, understanding these beats will improve your groove in general and will also work on coordination and independence that you can apply to so many other things you may want to learn.
I will of course be fielding any questions you may have on these topics or any other subjects you may want to cover.
This year, I am very excited to announce that we will have the legendary Russell Batiste as our special guest for the Masterclass!
Johnny Vidacovich, Shannon Powell and John Wooton will be available for private lessons on the premises at the rate $150 an hour. James Singleton will be available for private lessons as well. If you choose to pay for a lesson with James, you'll be able to play with and get feedback from a world-class bass player who has played with a ton of your favorite drummers including Johnny Vidacovich, Herlin Riley, Shannon Powell and James Black! To schedule your private lessons, please email Adam Kelly davidadamkelly@gmail.com
The culminating recital on Sunday will be held at The Columns Hotel, 3811 St. Charles Avenue.

TrainingGrounds Expands with New Orleans Public Library Location
By: Presley Tyler
TRAININGGROUNDS EXPANDS TO NEW ORLEANS EAST
The organization TrainingGrounds will be opening its second WE PLAY center at the East New Orleans Regional Library on December 13, 2023. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the library, located at 5641 Read Blvd., on December 8 at 10 a.m.
TrainingGrounds' WE PLAY Centers are free and safe learning spaces focused on play, and do so by providing age appropriate toys and activities for children. Here, newborns and children up to the age of three will engage in quality playtime with their caregivers.
The WE PLAY centers work to support parents and caregivers by creating nurturing bonds and fostering healthy brain development in children. The center supports parents and caregivers by creating nurturing bonds and fostering healthy brain development in children. This learning space also helps to develop language, social, and emotional skills.
For the Children
There are few places located in New Orleans East that provide free learning opportunities to children of early ages, but the WE PLAY Center is working to fill that void. The new expansion with the New Orleans Public Library is a milestone for TraningGrounds and its commitment to New Orleans. Now that there will be two WE PLAY Center locations, so more parents with infants or toddlers have the opportunity to receive support, information, and knowledge during the first years of their parenting journey so their children can thrive.
"We are thrilled to partner with the New Orleans Public Library to locate a We PLAY Center inside the East New Orleans Regional Library," said TrainingGrounds' co-founder and Executive Director Melanie Richardson in a press release. "This expansion reflects our vision for communities where sustainable, effective, child-centered early learning experiences engage parents, families, and caregivers with young children in ways that lead to healthy social development and educational success from birth to adulthood...we look forward to working closely with our supporters and the local community to ensure a village of care exists that nurtures both caregivers and children so our community can prosper."
Christine McCourtney is the head of early childhood literacy for the New Orleans Public Library and also expressed that this partnership is a natural one.
"The Library believes in helping parents and caregivers raise readers together. We are committed to providing support from the very beginning of children's early learning to years beyond. When partnering with organizations that are focused on early childhood learning, we are able to increase access to quality programs, services, and resources that support the early literacy practices and the development of pre-reading skills. We understand the importance of play and providing engaging and educational environments for parents and children to learn together. Which is why we could not be happier partnering with Training Grounds to open their WE PLAY Center at our East New Orleans Regional Library. Their mission aligns perfectly with our strategic goals to strengthen early childhood literacy. We cannot wait to see how positively this partnership impacts our city's children," said McCourtney in a press release.
Free Play
[TrainingGrounds, Website]
Since TrainingGrounds opened its doors in 2017, over 3000 children and their caregivers from New Orleans and surrounding parishes have participated in the WE PLAY programming. With this expansion, the WE PLAY Center's capacity will grow and offer additional "Play" and "Learn" sessions. The new location will be supplied with developmentally appropriate toys and play stations, as well as a staff of professional parenting educators that are dedicated to supporting parents with young children. Families that are a part of WE PLAY will also gain access to free programs and connections to community resources.

Running of the Santas, the annual holiday soiree of costumed revelers through the streets of the city’s Warehouse District, will return to spread holiday cheer Saturday, December 9, 2023.
This year’s event will start at the South Pole at Manning’s on Fulton Street and culminate with an extravagant costume contest with entrants from both the nice and naughty list at 5 p.m. Once the costume contest is complete, the festivities continue with a fun “run” that will send costumed Santas galivanting through the streets to the North Pole at Generations Hall on Andrew Higgins Boulevard where Bucktown All Stars will take to the stage and keep the party going into the early morning. This year’s holiday debauchery is sponsored by Absolut Vodka and Crescent Crown Distributing.
Online registration is open now according to event organizers. General admission tickets are $30, but a limited number of general admission tickets are available at a 2-for-1 price of $30 while supplies last. VIP tickets which include open bar at Generations Hall are $75. A special discount of two general admission tickets for the price of one will be available for a limited time.
The city’s most raucous holiday tradition, listed as one of the “Top 50 events every New Orleanian should experience,” kicks off with holiday food and specialty drinks from 2 to 6 p.m. at the “South Pole” located at Manning’s, at 519 Fulton Street. The city’s largest holiday costume contest will take place at Manning’s at 5 p.m. followed at 5:45 p.m. by the crowd of Santas running the five-block “Fun Run” to the “North Pole” located at Generations Hall at 310 Andrew Higgins Drive.
New Orleans’ most vibrant holiday tradition calls for “runners” from all over the Gulf Coast to don their most creative Christmas attire for a chance to win the treasured “Best Holiday Costume” award. Event organizers are expecting more than 3,000 costumed participants this year donned as Santa, Mrs. Claus, Scrooge, Rudolph, Jingle Bells, Jack Frost, Old Man Winter and much more. Last year’s “Running of the Santas” attracted thousands of revelers from across the Gulf Coast to the streets of downtown New Orleans to participate in the most unique and craziest Christmastime event.
The much-anticipated holiday costume contest with some of the most outlandish Christmastime outfits in town will take place this year at Manning’s at 5 p.m. and will be judged by local media celebrities. Prizes will be awarded for first and second places.
New details concerning the New Orleans “Running of the Santas” will be released via Facebook at facebook.com/runningsantas and on Twitter @RunningSantas.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit That Others May Live Foundation. The foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2002. The foundation provides scholarships, family counseling, and aid to surviving children of United States Air Force (USAF) Rescue Heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice during a rescue mission. The goal of the program is to ensure that every child of a fallen personnel recovery service member receives an opportunity for success.

What is the rarest blood type in the world?
Blood type AB negative is the rarest blood type in the world, with only about 0.6% of the world's population having it. This blood type is rare because it requires a person to inherit both the A and B antigens as well as the Rh factor.
Did You Know? It’s hard to imagine just how important blood donations are, but according to the American Red Cross, someone in the U.S. is in need of blood every two seconds.

DEBUT OPERA BY RICKY GRAHAM AT LOYOLA
Loyola University New Orleans' School of Music and Theatre Professions takes great pride in showcasing Amahl and the Night Visitors, featuring the debut opera direction of esteemed local actor and director Ricky Graham.
The show is scheduled for December 9 at 7:30 p.m. and December 10 at 2 p.m. at Loyola's Holy Name of Jesus Church. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and Loyola faculty and staff, and $8 for students. Children 10 years and younger can attend for free. Tickets are available for purchase online on Loyola's website.
The People Behind the Opera
Melissa Marshall, a musical theatre voice instructor at Loyola University and a New Orleans native, enlisted her longtime friend Graham to direct Amahl and the Night Visitors. The opera, a family-friendly tale, follows a shepherd boy who accompanies the Three Kings on their journey to Bethlehem. Despite being renowned for his comedic portrayals of New Orleans life, particularly in ...And the Ball and All, Graham, with over 50 years in the local theater scene, discovered his passion for opera in his 20s.
Graham, having had directed plays and musicals at Loyola including The Tempest, Tintypes, and The Money Box, stated that "[i]n [his] mind [he] staged a beautiful production of Salome starring Glenda Jackson," and that "[t]he closest [he] got to directing an opera was directing The Mikado for the Jefferson Performing Arts Society."
Although Graham has not officially directed an operatic production, he is well-versed in calling the shots in plays and musicals and is ready to take on the unique challenge of directing opera.
"Directing an opera is different because, technically, since everything is sung, it may take a little longer for an action to happen," Graham said in a press release. "How do you make that action seem realistic when you're holding a note for three measures?"
Soprano Journey Schaubhut, a Loyola graduate and interim director of the Loyola Preparatory Arts Program, takes on the role of Amahl, while Melissa Marshall plays his mother. Other characters in the Christmas-themed opera are portrayed by Loyola faculty, students, and alumni. The production, tailored for children, is a one-act performance with a duration of 54 minutes, as highlighted by Tyler Smith, the area coordinator of classical voice faculty at Loyola.
Loyola University is staging Amahl and the Night Visitors for the first time in decades, with Melissa Marshall's connection to the role dating back to her mother's portrayal of it at Loyola. Director Graham chose the Holy Name of Jesus Church for its festive holiday decor and acoustics, which are suitable for the opera. The production is conducted by Dreux Montegut, a voice professor at Loyola, and is financially supported by the Ranney and Emel Songu Mize Professorship in Opera. Additionally, members of the Loyola Chorale will be part of the performance.
The initial airing of Amahl and the Night Visitors took place on Christmas Eve 1951 on NBC, marking the United States' first televised opera. NBC enlisted the renowned Italian composer Gian Carlo Menotti to create the opera as part of the network's introduction of new opera programming.
Kate Duncan, director of the School of Music and Theatre Professions and the Conrad N. Hilton Chair in Music Industry, said that "[t]his production is emblematic of what we are doing here at Loyola," and that "[i]n its first iteration, the opera was an adaptation of a known art form to a new technology. Similarly, students across all disciplines within the school are learning how their artistic craft applies to the creative spaces not only of today, but of tomorrow as well."

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens in a New Adaptation by Patrick Barlow
Join us as we bring to life the classic tale of 'A Christmas Carol' at the Marquette Theatre on the Loyola campus.
About the Event
Celebrate the holiday season with Crescent City Stage in what we hope becomes a new annual tradition.
The Performance
Patrick Barlow, writer of the Broadway and West End hit The 39 Steps, has retold Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. This thrilling adaptation uses only five actors to bring some of Dickens' most beloved characters to life. From Scrooge and Tiny Tim to Bob Cratchit and Mrs. Fezziwig, Barlow's A Christmas Carol uses nothing more than some simple props, fresh physicality, and the power of imagination to convey this timeless story of redemption. Witness Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from a stingy miser to a man who generously celebrates the spirit of the season all year long, in this highly theatrical adaptation.
Join us for A Christmas Carol!

So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.
WICKED, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” WICKED has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” Time Magazine cheers, “if every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.” From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, WICKED—the untold true story of the Witches of Oz—transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. It will send your spirits soaring to heights you’ll never forget.

NATIONAL PASTRY DAY
National Pastry Day celebrates one of the world's most favored baked goods. On December 9th, visit your local bakery and pick up one or two of your favorite kinds.
The pastry is a name given to a large variety of baked goods which are made with ingredients such as flour, sugar, milk, butter, shortening, baking powder, and eggs. Pastry dough is rolled out thinly and then used as a base for different baked products. A few of the more common bakery items include pies, tarts, quiches, and pasties. Bakers create both savory and sweet dishes from the doughs they create. Additionally, they continue to develop new and delicious creations all the time!
- Pastries can be traced as far back as the ancient Mediterranean where they had almost paper-thin, multilayered baklava and Phyllo dough.
- Pastry-making began in Northern Europe after the Crusaders brought it back from the Mediterranean.
- French and Italian Renaissance chefs eventually perfected the puff and choux pastries while 17th and 18th-century chefs brought new recipes to the table. Included in the innovative recipes were Napoleons, cream puffs, and eclairs.
Culinary historians often consider French pastry chef Antonin Careme (1784 – 1833) to have been the original great master of pastry making in modern times.
Many different types of pastry deliver baked goods that make our mouths water. Most of them fall into one of the following categories:
- Shortcrust pastry – simplest and most common.
- Sweetcrust pastry – similar to the shortcrust but sweeter.
- Flaky pastry – simple pastry that expands when cooked.
- Puff pastry – has many layers that cause it to puff when baked.
- Choux pastry – very light pastry that is often filled with cream or other fillings.
- Phyllo pastry – paper-thin pastry dough that is used in many layers.

From Garage Startups to Global Giants: The Fastest-Growing Companies in History
Starting a business is no easy feat. It requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and a bit of luck. However, some companies have managed to grow at an incredible rate, going from garage startups to global giants in just a few years. In this blog post, we'll take a look at some of the fastest-growing companies in history.
Amazon
Amazon is the world's largest online retailer, but it started as a humble online bookstore in 1994. The company was founded by Jeff Bezos in his garage in Seattle, Washington. Within a month of launching, Amazon had already sold books to all 50 states and 45 countries. By the end of the year, the company had generated $511,000 in sales.
Amazon continued to grow rapidly, expanding into other product categories and launching its own line of consumer electronics. In 2018, the company became the second U.S. company to reach a market value of $1 trillion. Today, Amazon has over 800,000 employees and operates in over 100 countries.
Facebook
Facebook was launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and a group of his college friends. Initially, it was only available to students at Harvard University, but it quickly expanded to other universities and then to the general public.
Within just four years, Facebook had over 100 million users and was valued at $15 billion. Today, Facebook has over 2.8 billion monthly active users and is one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Uber
Uber was founded in 2009 by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp. The app-based ride-hailing service quickly disrupted the taxi industry and expanded to cities across the globe.
Within just five years, Uber was valued at over $60 billion and had operations in over 600 cities. The company has faced regulatory hurdles and controversies, but it remains one of the fastest-growing companies in history.
Airbnb
Airbnb was founded in 2008 by Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk. The company started as a way for the founders to rent out air mattresses in their apartment during a design conference in San Francisco.
Within just a few years, Airbnb had expanded to over 190 countries and had over 2 million listings. The company has faced regulatory challenges and criticism from the hotel industry, but it remains one of the fastest-growing companies in history.
Tesla
Tesla was founded in 2003 by Elon Musk, JB Straubel, Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning, and Ian Wright. The company was started with the goal of producing electric cars that would be affordable and practical for everyday use.
Within just a few years, Tesla had launched its first car, the Roadster, and had become one of the most valuable car companies in the world. Today, Tesla has a market value of over $600 billion and is leading the charge towards a sustainable future.
Starting a business is a risky endeavor, but these companies have proven that it's possible to achieve incredible success with the right idea, team, and execution. From Amazon's humble beginnings as an online bookstore to Tesla's mission to revolutionize the auto industry, these companies have changed the world in their own way.
Whether you're an entrepreneur looking to start your own business or just interested in the world of startups, these companies offer valuable lessons and inspiration. Who knows, maybe the next fastest-growing company in history is being started right now in someone's garage.

City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks
Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour
New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.
“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”
Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.
Highlights this year include:
2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays
Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included
Multiple dedicated Bike Nights
Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”
Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate
Holiday-themed Storyland
Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship
New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland
“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”
City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

130 Roosevelt Way New Orleans, LA, United States, Louisiana 70112
5PM
During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.
Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.
Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.
“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.
This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.
New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.
The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.
The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.
"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."
The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.
“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”
“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”
Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb. Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.
“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."
“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

THNOC Holiday Concert at St. Louis Cathedral
By: Presley Tyler
THNOC TO HOST HOLIDAY CONCERT FOR HOLIDAYS NEW ORLEANS STYLE
The Historic New Orleans Collection will be hosting a free-admission holiday concert, performed by The New Orleans Concert Band and special guests, at the St. Louis Cathedral for Holidays New Orleans Style on December 10 from 6 to 7 p.m.
The holiday concert will be led by led by Dr. Charles Taylor, who is the music director of the School of the Arts at University of New Orleans. The special guest of the evening will be Norman Robinson, former WDSU anchor and band member, and Robinson will be performing a rendition of The Night Before Christmas.
The event will not only feature holiday hits, but the collection of performances will also pay homage to the tradition of making music within the community of New Orleans. The renditions of holiday favorites are to be played by an ensemble of brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. The instruments used in the festive performances date back to the times of revolutions and were often played during military, ceremonial, or celebratory purposes.
This concert is part of Holidays New Orleans Style by French Quarter Fest Inc., which is an annual holiday tradition that hosts concerts in the French Quarter.
These performances also serve as a celebration of community-made music, and in the U.S., community-led bands have become an essential outlet for intergenerational creative expression. There is estimated to be over 1,000 active community-based music groups across America, and New Orleans has its share.

DELFEAYO MARSALIS
& The Uptown Jazz Orchestra
EVERY WEDNESDAY in DECEMBER!
That's right! After nearly 4 years, Delfeayo and the Big Band return home to Wednesdays at Snug Harbor!
Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers, and producers in jazz today. Known for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor…” (Los Angeles Times), he is “…one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation.” (San Francisco Examiner).
Early influences on Delfeayo's style include J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Al Grey, Tyree Glenn, Tommy Dorsey, and Duke Ellington’s trombone masters. From the age of 17 until the present, he has produced over 100 recordings for major artists, including Harry Connick Jr, Spike Lee, Terence Blanchard, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and his father and brothers.
In January 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton, and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor – a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, thus dubbing them
"America's First Family of Jazz."
On packing a full jazz orchestra into a tiny historic jazz club: "Whatever you have to do," the trombonist says philosophically. But when the band plays the swing and bebop hits from the 1930s through the 1960s, the music is just as tight. From Mardi Gras music to modern jazz, this band does it all.
An intimate experience like no other!
Shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm.
Doors at 7:00pm & 9:00pm.
Purchase advance tickets now, and then arrive early for dinner, drinks or dessert, to be in that number:

JACKSONVILLE STATE GAMECOCKS AND LOUISIANA RAGIN' CAJUNS ACCEPT INVITATIONS TO 2023 R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns accepted invitations today to compete in the 23rd Annual R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Saturday, December 16 at the Caesars Superdome. The game will kick off at 1:15 p.m. CST and will air on ESPN and ESPN Radio.
“On behalf of the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Committee and staff, it is a pleasure to host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in New Orleans for this year’s game,” said R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Chairman Sheriff Paul Valteau. “We look forward to an exciting game and a week full of celebrations for these outstanding programs.”
Jacksonville State finished its final year of transition to FBS with an 8-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in Conference USA play. This will be the Gamecocks’ first bowl appearance in program history.
“We are excited to be headed to New Orleans to represent Jax State in its first ever bowl game,” Head Coach Rich Rodriguez said. “I’m happy for our team, especially our seniors, for earning this opportunity in our first season in FBS. It will be a great week and experience for our players, staff and fans.”
Jacksonville State is one of only eight teams since 1970 to win at least eight games in its first season playing an FBS schedule. The Gamecocks finished third in Conference USA, falling to New Mexico State (10-4, 7-1) and Liberty (13-0, 8-0), who met in the CUSA championship game on Friday.
Under Head Coach Rich Rodriguez, the Gamecocks ranked second in CUSA in rushing, averaging 232.2 yards per game. Redshirt senior running back Malik Jackson ranks second in the league in rushing yards per game, and his 6.4 yards per carry was best in the conference.
Jacksonville State averaged 29.8 points per game, tied for third-best in the conference.
The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns concluded the regular season with a 6-6 overall record and 3-5 in the Sun Belt, making them bowl eligible for the sixth straight year, a record for the program.
“We are excited to make the trip to New Orleans and play in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl,” Head Coach Michael Desormeaux said. “The New Orleans Bowl Committee puts on a great event for our student-athletes, and we are looking forward to playing a great opponent in Jacksonville State.”
Louisiana’s rushing attack is also formidable, averaging 182.7 yards per game, second-best in the Sun Belt. The Cajuns’ 32.3 points per game ranks fourth in the league. The Cajuns are outstanding on special teams, with coverage units that lead the SBC in kick return and punt return yardage allowed.
Louisiana will make its record seventh R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl appearance. Its five wins are the most in the game’s history.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Professor Carl Nivale
Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!

https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...
A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.
Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.
What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.
- This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
- The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.
What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
